Major damage was reported in parts of Texas and Oklahoma after a series of tornadoes ripped through the region on Wednesday, May 4, 2022. On Thursday, severe thunderstorms are expected from eastern Texas into the mid-Mississippi Valley. Storms will shift over the lower Mississippi into the Tennessee Valleys on Friday, then Saturday into Monday from the central Plains into the Midwest.

Extensive structural damage was reported in the town of Lockett, TX, located about 80 km (50 miles) NW of Wichita Falls. In a phone call with The Weather Channel, a sheriff’s department employee in Wilbarger County said deputies were on the scene as of about 21:40 CDT.1

Another tornado hit Dickens County in the Texas Panhandle, about 80 km (50 miles) east of Lubbock. The tornado tracked east to south of Paducah.

Tornadoes also hit Seminole, OK tearing apart buildings, downing trees and powerlines, and littering streets with debris. Some 12 000 power outages were reported in Seminole County.2

The Academy of Seminole, a public charter school, was among the buildings damaged after taking a direct hit by the tornado.

“We will be accessing the damage over the next few days. Please do not come to the school: it is extremely dangerous. Everyone who was at the school is safe,” school officials said.

In de staten Mississippi, Louisiana en Alabama in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten zijn woensdag getroffen door minstens twintig tornado's, zo laat de National Weather Service (NWS) weten. De tornado's bliezen daken van huizen, beschadigden wegen en zorgden voor stroomuitval en omgevallen bomen.

Eén tornado die door Alabama trok werd door de NWS "levensbedreigend" genoemd. Volgens de Amerikaanse weerdienst zijn tornado's 's nachts extreem moeilijk te zien en te herkennen. "Wacht niet om de tornado te zien of te horen. ZOEK NU DEKKING!", aldus de NWS in een waarschuwing. Voor delen van Mississippi en Alabama gold tot 06.00 uur lokale tijd een tornadowaarschuwing. In laatstgenoemde staat werden ook hagelstenen ter grootte van een baseball voorspeld.

Begin deze maand trok een reeks krachtige tornado's nog door Oklahoma, Texas en Arkansas, waarbij één dode viel. Vanwege de ligging lopen Texas, Oklahoma en Arkansas doorgaans het meeste risico om getroffen te worden door tornado's, die vaak en soms verwoestend toeslaan in de VS. In december vorig jaar kwamen minstens 69 mensen om toen tientallen tornado's door vijf Amerikaanse staten trokken.

One dead, one missing in tornado
CADDO PARISH, La. (KSLA) — A child is dead, his mother is missing, another person is hurt and multiple homes are destroyed in the wake of tornadic storms that blew through the area Tuesday, Dec. 13.

“It’s really a sad, sad situation. And it’s one of the most unusual things I have ever seen,” Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator said, noting that the child’s body was found about a half mile from where the house used to be.

Authorities will be searching throughout the night and Wednesday for the mother, Prator added.

Manufactured/mobile homes were among dwellings destroyed on Pecan Road just northwest of Four Forks near Fullilove Cemetery in Caddo Parish, a storm chaser told the National Weather Service office in Shreveport. A forest was mowed down in that area as well.

Caddo sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of Lareta Street in Keithville’s Pecan Farms area after a tornado touched down there. The Sheriff’s Office reports that several structures were damaged and electrical lines and trees were knocked down.

The few houses that were in one area were destroyed, the sheriff said.

Early on, one woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, and two people were missing, authorities reported. Caddo sheriff’s deputies, K-9 teams, firemen and volunteers searched through debris and the area for the missing people.

Then about 11:30 p.m., Prator confirmed that the child’s body had been found.

Other Caddo deputies continue to check house to house on the welfare of other residents there.

The storms spawned multiple tornado warnings, with four simultaneously at one point, in the ArkLaTex.
