Als je wilt weten hoe 'erg' het relatief gezien is in staten moet je sowieso niet naar absolute aantallen, maar naar per capita gevallen kijken.

Tja, hoe erg het relatief gezien is in staten, zie je terug op de stats van de NYT en CNN. Daar staan de cijfers per capita. Maar ook die kunnen vertekenend zijn; het blijven tenslotte vooral de noordoostelijke staten (met relatief gezien veel meer inwoners per vierkante kilometer) die de meeste besmettingen en overlijdens per capita hebben (NY, NJ, Connecicut, Massachussetts, Rhode Island, etc.).

Coronavirus infections appear to spike in U.S. even as they decline elsewhere
While many countries are seeing a decline in COVID-19 cases, infections in the United States appear to be spiking, according to documents obtained by Yahoo News.
In a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention document dated June 9, the U.S. had the highest spike of percentage change in daily cases, with a 36.5 percent jump in recent days. Of the top 10 countries in total cases, that is the biggest spike by a significant margin, compared with drops in cases in Brazil, Spain, Italy, Germany and Iran and growths of under 5 percent in Russia, India and Peru.
A June 9 Federal Emergency Management Agency document shows the same spike in cases. The rolling average of deaths in the U.S., per the FEMA document, is starting to trend up over 1,000 per day.
As Texas continues to reopen, the state has set the record for coronavirus-related hospitalizations for the third straight day. On Wednesday, North Carolina reported a record high for statewide cases.
Cases are also spiking in Arizona, where the state’s largest health system said it is reaching its capacity for patients needing external lung machines .
Earlier this week, Arizona’s health director sent a letter to hospitals telling them to “fully activate” their emergency plans.
“We don’t want people to be in crisis mode, thinking that everything is all bad in Arizona with the cases,” said Jessica Rigler, the state health department’s assistant director. “We are certainly monitoring what’s going on and trying to ensure that people understand where we are with COVID-19 in our communities.”
In California, meanwhile, Gov. Gavin Newsom has urged calm as the state deals with a surge in cases.
“As we phase in, in a responsible way, a reopening of the economy, we’ve made it abundantly clear that we anticipate an increase in the total number of positive cases,” Newsom said Tuesday. “But we also made it abundantly clear that the concurrent recognition and commitment that we are in a substantially different place than we were 90 days ago. We have hundreds of millions of masks now in our possession.”
Public health experts have warned that many areas of the country are opening too soon. Lenient social distancing policies in some states combined with Memorial Day weekend gatherings could be responsible for the current rise in cases.
There are also concerns that the massive protests following the death of George Floyd could help accelerate the spread in some communities. According to tracking by the New York Times, cases are rising in 20 states as well as Puerto Rico.
More than a month has passed since the White House’s coronavirus task force held a briefing, despite hundreds of Americans dying daily from the disease. On Monday, Politico reported that President Trump planned to restart his campaign rallies within the next two weeks.
“We were able to close our country, save millions of lives, open,” Trump said on Friday. “And now the trajectory is great.”

Ik pak Worldometer er doorgaans bij voor het internationale vergelijk. Daarvoor geldt in mijn ogen overigens ook dat je de relatieve cijfers moet pakken en niet de absolute en daarnaast vooral moet kijken naar de ontwikkeling van de cijfers. Het meest problematische voor de VS lijkt me dat ze de inhaalslag in per capita sterfte al aardig aan het maken zijn (inmiddels ongeveer op het niveau van Nederland), maar waar in bijvoorbeeld Nederland de sterfte alweer bijna tot nul is gedaald, geldt dat voor de VS nog niet bepaald. Tel daarbij op dat men daar veelal alweer doet alsof alles weer los kan en je hebt nog een aardig dramatisch scenario voor de boeg in mijn ogen.quote:

Het moet natuurlijk niet gaan over het virus en het aantal doden, maar over de demonstraties.

En dan wordt het interessant om te zien hoe de VS reageert als andere landen waar het virus inmiddels vrijwel weg is het luchtruim dicht gaat gooien voor Amerikaanse vluchten en/of elke Amerikaan verplicht 2 weken in quarantaine gooit. Data van Johns Jopkins repository in Github, automatisch opgehaald en gemanipuleerd om grafiekjes te maken en combineren en saven in R. Maar dat kende je niet. Is een software wat vooral gericht was op statistiek maar waar je inmiddels heel veel meer mee kunt via allerlei extensies (packages).quote:

Ik heb je een keer eerder gevraagd waar je deze statistiekjes vandaan haalde en je hebt me toen netjes antwoord gegeven. Maar ik heb het nergens opgeslagen en kon het gisteren niet meer terugvinden toen ik er naar zocht.
Dus, nog één keertje: waar haal je deze cijfers vandaan?
North Carolina gaat ook wel slecht trouwens (versnellende toename).
Of je nu het aantal nieuwe gevallen of het aantal nieuwe gevallen per hoofd van de bevolking laat zien maakt voor de vorm van de grafiek niks uit, tenzij je de y-as standaardiseert, maar het gaat juist om de patronen. Met een logaritmische schaal is het wat gemakkelijker om te zien of de groei versnelt of afneemt, maar aangezien het hier om aantal gevallen per dag gaat, en niet om het totaal aantal gevallen lijkt me dat niet de beste optie. Zal later vandaag wat grafiekjes plaatsen met gestandaardiseerde assen zodat beter te zien is hoeveel erger New York was, of hoe weinig corona er eigenlijk nog maar is in veel staten. Misschien doe ik Nederland er dan ook wel bij, zodat men een referentie heeft met iets wat men beter kent. Eerst even wat grafiekjes afmaken die per land de 'hoeveelheid' maatregelen laten zien en het aantal gevallen per dag (kan helaas niet voor de VS omdat het zoveel verschilt per staat en de data van welke maatregelen wanneer zijn genomen is nog niet per staat beschikbaar).quote:

En dan bij social distancing, is per staat te bekijken, of je de data ook makkelijk eruit kan krijgen weet ik niet.
De genoemde maatregelen lijken wel wat beperkt (geen onderscheid naar sectoren b.v.), maar het geeft wel een aardige eerste inkijk. Ook genoeg verschillen tussen de staten die nu nogal een opwaartse trend vertonen (zie artikel ergens hierboven).

The 53-country survey of 120,000 people by the German polling firm Dalia Research and the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, an organisation headed by the former Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen, reveals deep dissatisfaction with US leadership.
The survey found electorates in Greece (89%), Taiwan (87%), Ireland (87%), South Korea, Australia and Denmark (all 86%) are happiest worldwide with the performance of their government in controlling the coronavirus. At the bottom end of the scale are Brazil, France, Italy, the US and the UK.
Only a third of people around the world said the US responded well to Covid-19, compared with more than 60% who said China’s response was good. In only three countries – Taiwan, the US and South Korea – do more people think the US has responded well to the pandemic than think China has responded well.

(CNN)The Food and Drug Administration has revoked its emergency use authorization for the drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for the treatment of Covid-19.
Hydroxychloroquine was frequently touted by President Donald Trump, and he has claimed to have used it himself.
After reviewing the current research available on the drugs, the FDA determined that the drugs do not meet "the statutory criteria" for emergency use authorization as they are unlikely to be effective in treating Covid-19 based on the latest scientific evidence, the agency noted on its website on Monday.
"FDA has concluded that, based on this new information and other information discussed in the attached memorandum, it is no longer reasonable to believe that oral formulations of HCQ and CQ may be effective in treating COVID-19, nor is it reasonable to believe that the known and potential benefits of these products outweigh their known and potential risks," FDA chief scientist Denise Hinton wrote in a letter to Gary Disbrow of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) on Monday.
"Accordingly, FDA revokes the EUA for emergency use of HCQ and CQ to treat COVID-19," Hinton wrote in the letter, using abbreviations for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine. "As of the date of this letter, the oral formulations of HCQ and CQ are no longer authorized by FDA to treat COVID-19."
"This decision was based on evaluation of the EUA criteria and the scientific evidence available at that time. We continue to look at the data on hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine and we will make future determinations on these products based on available evidence including ongoing clinical studies," Hahn said in the letter last month.
The emergency use authorization, or EUA, made it easier for pills donated to the national stockpile to be distributed to coronavirus patients.
Hahn added in the letter that "we also knew it was important to help ensure a stable supply of the drugs for patients with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis given the increased demand."
In an interview with CNN last month, Hahn also defended his agency's handling of hydroxychloroquine. He acknowledged the political climate surrounding the drug, but said, "I stand by our decisions because I think they are rooted in science and data, and we'll continue to reevaluate."

Wat het kaartje betreft. Ik vraag me wel echt af of Spanje niet naar Trump geluisterd heeft. Daar hebben ze al een week vrijwel geen nieuwe doden. Het zou me niet verbazen als men gestopt is met kijken of Covid-19 de doodsoorzaak is: Stoppen met testen -> geen nieuwe gevallen.quote:

(CNN)Attendees at President Donald Trump's rally scheduled for Saturday will not be required to maintain social distance or wear masks, even as the administration's top public health officials continue to stress the importance of both measures in preventing the spread of coronavirus.
Trump is set to hold his first rally on Saturday since March, when the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to all in-person campaign events. The rally will take place at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which has a capacity of just under 20,000. The campaign says it is expecting a full house.
"It is a Trump rally, the arena will be packed," said Tim Murtaugh, communications director for the Trump campaign. The BOK Center has canceled or postponed every other scheduled event through the end of July.
Campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted on Monday that the campaign plans to check the temperature of everyone who enters the venue. They will also be providing hand sanitizer, and each attendee will receive a mask provided by the campaign, although they will not be required to wear it. Trump has notably declined to wear a mask in public.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing cloth face coverings in places where it is difficult to maintain social distancing. In its online guidance for face coverings, the CDC also writes, "It is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus."
The Tulsa Health Department said in a statement obtained Sunday by CNN that it is "concerned about the safety of any large gathering of people in enclosed spaces where social distancing is difficult to maintain."
The department last week encouraged caution regarding large gatherings after an investigation in Tulsa "identified an outbreak linked to indoor gatherings, which large groups of people congregated in close contact for prolonged periods of time."
There was a "meaningful increase" in cases of coronavirus last week in the city, according to the statement. As of Friday, there had been 1,443 total confirmed cases of coronavirus in Tulsa County, and 62 deaths.

Volgens hun eigen plannen zouden ze per 1 juni in fase 3 moeten zitten (als de cijfers daar aanleiding toe geven). Of dat nu echt het geval is, lees ik niet zo snel.
