Lying in the southeastern corner of Cyprus, Ayia Napa is one of the island's major resorts. As recently as 25 years ago there was nothing here but a sleepy fishing village. Now it's a popular destination for huge numbers of holiday-makers from northern Europe. It attracts two main types: young, free and single under-25s, and families with young children.

The former are lured by Ayia Napa's international reputation as a 24-hour party place - a clubbing paradise second only to Ibiza.

The streets around the monastery in the centre of town are filled with enough bars and clubs to keep the most dedicated night owl happy, and major UK names such as the Ministry of Sound and Cream have regular residencies here during the summer months.

For families, the main attractions (apart from the wonderful weather) are the excellent beaches and parent-friendly facilities.

The beaches, with lovely golden sand and clear blue water, are generally clean and safe.

Many are Blue Flag and have lifeguards on duty, as well as offering all the usual amenities such as umbrellas, sunbeds and showers.

Most hotels have kids' clubs, so parents can relax knowing their children are being looked after, and there's plenty of entertainment on tap, including a huge waterpark, go-karting, mini-golf and bowling.

There's not much in the way of sightseeing, unless you hire a car and go further afield on the island.

However, there's a wide range of water sports and activities on offer, the shopping is good and there's endless entertainment laid on in the form of karaoke nights, cabarets, magic shows and quiz nights.

The hotels, which are almost completely booked up by large package operators, are generally clean, friendly and well run, with swimming pools and balconies pretty much standard.

Basically, Ayia Napa is a highly commercialised, unashamedly touristy resort.

It's not a place to come in search of tranquillity and tradition, or to find the 'real' Cyprus.

But if what you want from a holiday is to have fun in the sun, you've come to the right place.
