Ach, ga weg.quote:Rolf Aldag and Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka have announced that he will depart the team at the conclusion of the season.
This will bring an end to a four-year period, in which he has played a key role within the team, and is an entirely amicable step, mutually decided on with a sense of gratitude for the past and heart-felt wishes of good luck for the respective futures.
In addition, Rolf´s belief in the team’s continued campaign to change lives through bicycles as it rides for a higher purpose, has underpinned the value that he has offered during his time with the team.
Team Principal, Doug Ryder said: “Rolf’s wide knowledge of the sport, which he was always willing to share, his skilled engagement with our partners and the implementation of systems and structures together with his belief in the core ideal of the team – in that we are changing lives through bicycles – sees him depart as a valued member of our team’s story.
“We wish Rolf and his family all the very best in the future.”
Team Head of Performance, Rolf Aldag said: “After working productively for four years with the team, for me the bike handovers to South African kids at trainings camps in Cape Town will forever be one of the most emotional and memorable moments in my career. And so I will continue to deeply root for the team’s success in what it hopes to achieve, on and off the bike.”

In a very exciting move, we are delighted to announce that Carlos Barbero has signed as part of our rebrand to Team NTT from 1, January 2020.
The 28-year-old Spaniard will join us after three years at Movistar and brings a huge amount of racing experience to our team, having ridden with some of the best riders in the world.
Barbero has spent all of his professional career at Spanish teams; first riding with Orbea Continental and then Euskadi before stepping up a level to join Caja Rural.
He moved to Movistar in 2017 and made an immediate impression taking stage victories at Comunidad de Madrid, Vuelta a Burgos, Hammer Limburg, Castilla y Leon – all performances that he followed up in 2018 too.
While in 2019 he won the opening stage of the the Tour of Austria as well as delivering strong performances at Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne and Gent-Wevelgem.
Carlos Barbero
I am very happy and excited to be part of the team since I have been in Spanish teams for all my career, so it’s a new challenge for me to be part of a foreign team. This motivates me a lot and I think that my riding style suits the team.
I intend to bring stage wins for the team when I have the opportunity, and also to help my colleagues to achieve victory. The important thing is that the team adds stage wins.
My ambitions are to show consistency during the whole year, and I am very motivated to focus on the classics calendar, but above everything, that the team is happy with my work at the end of the year.
Douglas Ryder, Team Principal
Carlos joining us is really exciting; he’ll not only bring a different set of skills to our team but also bolster what we already have in our current Classics environment.
His experience speaks for itself and his versatility will be of huge benefit. He’s been with Spanish teams his whole career so to have him bring that experience into our group is also going to be of great benefit.

Delighted, ja, jawel!quote:We are delighted to announce a trio of exciting signings confirmed to join Team NTT in 2020.
Exhaustive, industry-leading approach! All three take the significant step up from Continental and Pro-Continental level, respectively, to the WorldTour following an exhaustive, industry-leading approach in identifying them specifically as talents required for our team.
Een gokje, weinig game-changing aan.quote:Dyball, 30, currently rides for Team Sapura and has had an excellent 2019 season. The highlight being his overall victory at the Tour de Langkawi which included a win on the stage four summit finish at Genting Highlands. It was the type of finish perfectly suited to him and he brings an additional weapon to our line-up as we look toward furthering our team’s GC ambitions. He has been competing at continental level since 2011, gaining significant experience racing for the likes of Avanti Racing, St. George Continental and also as a trainee with Delko Marseille Provence.
He was 5th in the Australian National Championships in the road race and also had a strong Tour of Utah.
Stokbrood is een re-de-lij-ke renner. Redelijk. Vrij armoedig.quote:Stokbro, 23, joins us from Riwal Readynez where he most recently competed at the Tour of Britain. A crash early in the race saw his chances scuppered of making the impression that he’d hoped but the Dane has already had an impressive 2019 season. A superb sprint victory at the u23 Ronde van Vlaanderen has been the crowning moment of his season with 5th at the Grote Prijs Marcel Kint & 4th at the Danish national championships also being highlights.

Rebranded cycling team will use co-innovated technologies to drive performance through the 2020 season
NTT Pro Cycling, a UCI WorldTour cycling team based in South Africa, unveiled its team for the 2020 season as it rebrands from Team Dimension Data. The announcement, made at the home of NTT in Tokyo, was accompanied by a jersey reveal and insights into the technology solutions driving rider recruitment and race strategy within the team.
The new kit will grace the WorldTour and the sport’s biggest races throughout 2020. It’s a brand that riders – old and new – will wear with immense pride, while at the same time continuing to showcase the impact that bicycles have in changing lives through NTT Pro Cycling’s work with Qhubeka, which has recently distributed its 100,000th bike.
The team for 2020 features nine exciting new riders, to supplement the current pool of talent as the team looks to race with a goal of establishing itself among the top ten teams in the world.
The 2020 line-up includes:
First Name Surname Country Age
1 Carlos Barbero ESP 28
2 Samuele Battistella ITA 20
3 Edvald Boasson Hagen NOR 32
4 Victor Campenaerts BEL 28

Each of the riders were selected with the help of a technology solution that was co-innovated by NTT and NTT Pro Cycling. The solution leverages advanced data analytics that helps the team to select riders, prepare its race calendar and assign the right riders to the right races. Technology also helps the team monitor the health and wellness of its riders through a mobile application, and business-focused applications such as asset tracking, vehicle tracking and monitoring, help the team to function as a well-organized global business. Together, we’ve created the most technically advanced team in the WorldTour. Wahahahahaha. THE MOST TECHNICALLY ADVANCED TEAM IN THE WORLDTOUR
Doug Ryder, Team Principal, NTT Pro Cycling:
“Thanks to all of our partners, and in particular our title sponsor NTT Ltd.. We strive to be the benchmark within the sport through being a performance-driven, technology-enabled team that is underpinned by our unique purpose-led approach in support of the Qhubeka charity.

It will be the 5th successive season that our feeder team will base itself in Lucca, Italy, and will take on the competitive u23 European racing scene as the NTT Continental Cycling Team.
NTT Continental Cycling Team is the continuation of the former Team Dimension Data Continental Team, which is one of the most successful u23 feeder team’s in world cycling.
The 2019 season was a stand-out year for the team as they picked up 14 victories, racing in 7 different countries over a total of 84 race days. Samuele Battistella winning the u23 world championship road race title was undoubtedly the most significant result of the year. Having 5 riders graduate to the pro ranks in 2020 is testament to the success achieved in 2019.
An exciting and talented 2020 roster has been assembled, with a strong focus on developing the best u23 African talent on the continent.
From South Africa, Marc Pritzen will join the team for 2020 having just triumphed at the prestigious 94.7 Ride Joburg National Classic, Marc has been the number 1 rider in the Support SA talent Road Cycling series ranking in 2019. Connor Brown will start his 2nd season in our colours.
From Eritrea, Natnael Tesfazion will continue with us in 2020 and he will be joined by compatriot, Henok Mulueberhan Solomon. Negasi Abreha, who at just 18 years of age, was crowned the elite Ethiopian National Road Champion this year, will be joining our squad for 2020.
With our four u23 Italian riders from 2019 all turning pro in 2020, we will see an all new Italian quartet next season. Samuele Rubino, Leonardo Marchiori, Riccardo Bobbo and Mattia Guasco will don the blue NTT Continental Cycling Team colours next season.
Finally, we are delighted to confirm that for the first time, our team will have two Zwift Academy winners in our line-up. 2018 winner, Martin Lavric, will continue for his 2nd season with us while the 2019 Zwift Academy winner will be crowned at our December training camp, and fill the final spot on the NTT Continental Cycling Team roster.

We are very excited about continuing with our development program under our rebranded title partner NTT, in 2020. The 2019 cycling season was a successful year for our team, and we hope to build on these successes with a new roster of talented African and Italian riders. With 8 new riders in our line-up next year, they will have a lot to learn but we believe in their talent, and we look forward to helping them grow as athletes and as people.
Douglas Ryder – NTT Pro Cycling Team Principal
This team is going from strength to strength, year on year and culminated in a world champion this year, in Samuele Battistella who now joins the NTT Pro Cycling Team in the World Tour. Each year we look to this team for riders to join our UCI World Team and each year 1 to 2 riders step up as neo-pros.
2020 is an incredible year for development teams of UCI World Teams. Riders registered with a development team may participate in UCI ProSeries or Class 1 events with the related UCI World Team at any time in the season. This will create opportunities for young riders that were not there before and make the NTT Pro Cycling team stronger. We are better together.

The partnership is built on a shared vision to continue the development of the team along with its commitment to showcase the impact that bicycles have in changing people’s lives. It will also enable Virtu Cycling to further strengthen and develop its brand promise; to create unique cycling experiences.
NTT Pro Cycling has today announced that it has joined forces with Virtu Cycling, a Danish group of cycling-related activities, in a newly established partnership, effective immediately.
The parties have agreed a deal which sees Virtu Cycling invest in one third of the shares of theoperational company behind NTT Pro Cycling. Together, the partners will seek to continue the development of the team from both a sporting and an organizational perspective, with a view to long term sustainability and success into the future.
This partnership naturally sees the continued commitment and support of the Qhubeka Charity, which incredibly distributed its 100 000th bicycle in 2019.
Virtu Cycling is co-owned by former Tour de France winner, Bjarne Riis, and businessmen and entrepreneurs, Lars Seier Christensen and Jan Bech Andersen.
Riis will take on the role as Team Manager of NTT Pro Cycling and will build on its sporting development, together with its sporting staff and the technology-driven approach to performance.
Bjarne Riis, Virtu Cycling co-owner and Team Manager, NTT Pro Cycling:
“This is a proud moment for our organization, Virtu Cycling, and I’m really excited by this partnership and its potential. Together, I believe we can develop one of the world’s best cycling teams built on being performance and technology-driven, combined with our many years of experience from the World Tour.
“We have had some thorough and fruitful talks and meetings with Doug Ryder on the team’s future and potential. I’m really looking forward to our collaboration and to take on the sporting leadership of the team in this new setup. I have nothing but admiration for what Doug has built and achieved with this team starting on continental level onwards to become a WorldTour-team, for his contribution to cycling and his work and support for the Qhubeka Charity. Together, I believe we can take the team to the next level and make it a team that everybody – riders and staff – want to be a part of.”
Douglas Ryder, founder and Team Principal, NTT Pro Cycling:
“Today is yet another significant moment in the history of this team, and indeed its future. The expertise and breadth of experience that Bjarne Riis will provide in supporting the sporting development through our unique technology-driven performance approach will be hugely significant, and further add on to what we have built with our title sponsor, NTT Ltd.”
“I believe this partnership will benefit the entire team to help them achieve great results which in turn helps shine a spotlight on our partners, our way of working as a team but most importantly our commitment in support of the Qhubeka Charity.
“Danish cycling is in a very strong place and this partnership, together with the foundation that we already have in place, I believe will help develop the team to become one of the best in the world in the years to come.

Strong focus on developing African talent.
BATTISTELLA Samuele > NTT Pro Cycling
CHOKRI El Mehdi > ???
EJGU Million Beza > ???
HAILEMICHAEL Mulu Kinfe > Nippo - Delko - Marseille-Provence
KONYCHEV Alexander > Mitchelton - Scott
MOZZATO Luca > B&B Hotels - Vital Concept
MUGISHA Samuel > Elite-2
SOBRERO Matteo > NTT Pro Cycling
Weinig deelnemers waarschijnlijk.
Dan houden we de vijf Afrikanen over. Of nouja, 4,5.

Nouja, mooi verhaal, doen we niets mee dus. Ook heerlijk hoe Doug zichzelf altijd kan tegenspreken: “Doug challenged us last year; he wanted us to tell him which rider agents he should be going and talking to, allowing him to be proactive in the recruitment process. Where is the talent that was not as obvious?” The last few weeks have been incredible seeing all the comments from fans in terms of how this team has connected with them in different ways. Watte? To be able to recreate the team as Team Qhubeka ASSOS talks to exactly what we continue to strive for, and that is to be a purpose-led, high-performance racing team. High-performance, zonder performers. Exciting position, maar dan niet helemaal.quote:TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS – “A DREAM COME TRUE”
Douglas Ryder, the South African founder of NTT Pro Cycling, is thrilled to announce the next step in our team’s incredible journey, which sees us moving forward in partnership with the leader in performance cycling apparel, ASSOS of Switzerland, to create Team Qhubeka ASSOS.
Since founding the team, Ryder’s ultimate dream has been to use the profile and success the team has developed on cycling’s global stage to promote its purpose: changing lives through bicycles together with the Qhubeka Charity.
This call to action has been keenly felt by our riders, staff, partners and fans across the world and seen our team raise funds for more than 30 000 bicycles for distribution to Qhubeka programmes in South Africa.
From 2021, our team – which has formerly ridden as MTN, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka and most recently NTT Pro Cycling – will be in the exciting position to further advance this movement by racing to raise awareness of the mobility challenges that occur throughout communities in Africa.
Team Principal Douglas Ryder said: “I am really happy to have gained the support of some incredible people and partners including ASSOS of Switzerland who have stepped in to be a headline sponsor. To be able to recreate the team as Team Qhubeka ASSOS talks to exactly what we continue to strive for, and that is to be a purpose-led, high-performance racing team. The last few weeks have been incredible seeing all the comments from fans in terms of how this team has connected with them in different ways. I am so happy we can continue to create hope and opportunity through our team and with Qhubeka Charity.
“I look forward to welcoming new partners to Team Qhubeka ASSOS as we plan and prepare for a new season in 2021 in a world that has been so heavily impacted by the pandemic. The bicycle continues to be a tool to change the lives of so many people for commuting, for sport, for health, for freedom and access. Our team has always been about much more than victories, but we do love to win.”
“I also want to pay a special tribute to our staff. Those in the sport know just how difficult it is, so to see the diligence, care and professionalism they’ve shown throughout gives me inspiration, every day. We truly are a family,” Ryder concluded.
Derek Bouchard-Hall, ASSOS CEO, said: “We have really enjoyed being part of this mission driven team – Qhubeka’s slogan that “bicycles change lives” could not inspire us more. And ASSOS has always been and continues to be deeply entwined in professional cycling – we were really moved by the opportunity to support the sport during the COVID crisis by keeping this important team part of the pro peloton.”
“We love the mission, the people and the challenge that comes with it,” said Roche Maier, ASSOS Board Member and Chief ASSOS Creative design Centre. “We are made in cycling and contributing to support and further develop the pinnacle of high-performance cycling is just the proper thing to do, especially in these uncertain times.
“Team Qhubeka ASSOS is not a traditional sponsorship but will be operated as the lighthouse of the Assos Worksteam. Our team will be used and abused to push boundaries of product development and stress tests to yet another level. We thank Douglas for the opportunity.”
Qhubeka Executive Director, Tsatsi Phaweni said: “Qhubeka has developed a relationship with Doug Ryder and his team that spans more than a decade and is founded on our shared belief that bicycles change people’s lives for the better.
“We have huge respect for all they have achieved to date and look forward to continuing to cheer them on in 2021 and beyond. We remain grateful for their continued support of our work and for all their efforts to raise funds and awareness for Qhubeka, along with their fans, sponsors and the broader cycling community. Together, we can change more lives with bicycles, and so we wish them every success.”
A special thanks to our partners: ASSOS of Switzerland, BMC, Mercedes Benz, Supersport, Rotor, Selle Italia, Tacx, Garmin, OTE, Morgan Blue, Vittoria, Compresssport, KMC, Vida e Café, Solrx, Lumin Sports, EME.Italy, Hyperice, Scicon, ASG, Elite, Burgt Reclame, L’Avenir, APO Group, Zwift and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
Further details and announcements related to the team will be made in due course.
https://www.assos.com/shorts-stories/continental-dreamsquote:Kevin Campbell — As a South African who cut his teeth trying to make it as a cyclist in Belgium, straight-talking Kevin is committed to promoting diversity within cycling — especially when it’s backed up by real talent, something which the general manager of NTT Continental Team knows exactly how to spot and nurture.
“How do you show you’re a phenomenon if you’re not given the chance to get on a bike?
Nowadays there’s an expectation to be a fully finished product at 20-21 years of age, but how can you do that as an African rider arriving in Europe aged 19, going from a peloton of 50–60 where you’re so strong that you’re riding at the front in a small group to races in Europe with pelotons of 150+ and 50 riders that are equally as strong as you, taking on wet, narrow roads in conditions that you’ve never ridden in before?
There are plenty of times when Europeans go to Rwanda to race — the Tour of Rwanda at 2,000 msl, in tropical climates — and their lack of performance is explained by cultural or climatic differences. Why isn’t it looked upon like this for non-Europeans who’ve outperformed in these races and now try to race in Europe?
We’ve learned that it generally takes a season for a rider to show their potential to adapt and face up to the challenges. They might demonstrate the numbers and have the physical attributes but this doesn’t always transition. It depends on their motivation; sometimes they don’t pack the rider that they were in Africa into their luggage when they come to Europe, or they’re unable to unpack the same game when they arrive here.
The best way to find up-and-coming talents is through word of mouth, talking to riders who’ve already made it who can point us towards the next generation. We keep an eye on results coming from the continent but getting things like power data is almost impossible — plus, these riders often don’t test well and ride on instinct and talent. This shows us the potential to develop them, but we really have to help the best one to learn how to race astutely. All the things that we accept as normal here in European racing are a huge challenge for all-non Europeans, racing downhills, in the wet at speed, cornering in a group of 150 and even things like nutrition and fuelling yourself when the race starts in the afternoon. We’re not a boarding school that mothers riders, but one of our goals is to make sure they learn to live independently — a WorldTour will never chase after them. We’ll teach them how to cook, but we don’t cook for them; we’ll teach them how to shop, but we don’t shop for them. This is why we’ve created our hub in Lucca, it serves as constant team building, giving a space for them to learn from the experienced Italian riders on the team — on and off the bike.
Other teams are less willing to take a risk — both at a Continental level like us, and at the WorldTour. An Australian talent can win a stage at the Tour Down Under and be on a WT team by the end of the year, but if an African performs well at a similar level, teams will turn around and say there’s a lack of experience.
The proudest moments for us as a team aren’t necessarily the wins, but the breakthroughs, the moments when the world sees a surprise, storming performance up a climb. We don’t want our riders to be considered charity cases; they should be considered genuine contenders. They’re good enough.”
Arme Negasi.
NEGASI HAYLU ABREHA: THE RIDER WHO CAN’T GO HOME
[EDITORIAL]: Every morning when the Ethiopian road race champion, Negasi Haylu Abreha, wakes up he has no idea whether his family are alive. He has no way of being able to call home or message them immediately to check.
WHY?
Negasi, who in 2021 will ride his second year with the Team Qhubeka Continental team, is from Mek’ele, the main town in the region of Tigray, Ethiopia. It’s a region that’s seen conflict arise between national government forces and the region’s ruling party, following an outbreak of hostilities in early November. It’s a situation that’s continued unabated, which at the time of writing has seen the United Nations declare its concern over a potential humanitarian crisis in the region.
This conflict arose on 4 November 2020, the exact same date that Negasi travelled from Bologna to Rome after the conclusion of racing for the season for the NTT Continental cycling team. He was returning home to his family after his first full season with the team having shown tremendous promise.
Once in Rome he was set to catch a flight to Addis Ababa and then an onward connection to Mek’ele. After arriving and waiting to board his flight he received a phone call from Team Manager Kevin Campbell, who had been at home scrolling through the news feed on his phone and taken note of the reported tensions arising in northern Ethiopia.
After further investigation and attempting to contact the Ethiopian embassy to get clarity on the current situation, it was clear that the people from the region of Tigray were to be cautious as all domestic flights to the region were cancelled immediately. If Negasi had boarded his flight he would have been stranded in Addis Ababa and there was major concern that his safety could be at great risk. It was agreed that it would be better to wait until there was more information regarding the situation, and only return home when safe to do so.
This decision created an immediate situation at the airport as Negasi’s luggage had already been loaded onto the Addis Ababa-bound flight and required one of our team’s staff members, Martina Alessandri, explaining the situation to airport officials over the phone. The youngster then opted to sleep in the airport, hoping to get onto the first flight back to Bologna; however, as the ticket office only opened after 6am he eventually was only able to return later that afternoon.
Negasi returned to the team house in Lucca, alone, as all of his teammates had already left for home, and stayed until the end of the month, at which point the rental agreement for the premises came to an end. With the situation over a return home to Ethiopia still unclear he moved indefinitely into the apartment of another staff member, Damian Murphy, until there was an option for him to be hopefully be reunited with his family.
That has never happened so he will wait now until early March when the team house is available again to join his Continental teammates for the start of their 2021 season. His hopes of a return home on hold, indefinitely.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
It is very difficult (to stay in touch with my family) because all the network coverage in Tigray has been shut off. I am sometimes able to call my mom on a Sunday. We keep the calls very, very short. It is usually “Hello Negasi, we are okay, everyone is fine and we love you. Ciao.” My mother told me to never ask more about the situation over the phone out of fear for their safety.
I am very scared for my family and friends. I only see pictures of what might be on social media or what people send me. I know the places in the pictures from my home region, and I can see the death, destruction and poverty happening there now.
For sure it’s difficult (for me at the moment). I have stress for my family but also, I am very grateful and happy because I have people around me from the team that are helping me a lot. The team give me a place to stay, provide all my food and make sure I am always able to train. I am still motivated to train because I know If I can be successful, I can help my family more.
I am very happy to be in this team. They are like family to me now: Kevin, Martina, Oksana, Damian – everyone, they all help me a lot. The team has provided me with a big opportunity.
If I wasn’t a bike rider I would be in Ethiopia now where it would be dangerous and a very difficult life. In my region and hometown many people are dying every day. Maybe it is between 500 – 700 people who are dying every day.
There is no food or water, they have closed everything. There are no shops and businesses open. My parents can do nothing. My brother is older than me, he is a hairdresser but he cannot work now. I have three younger sisters, normally they should be in school, but all the schools are closed. With the help of a friend I was able to send them some money last year.
But for now they all do nothing, they just survive.
Voor de liefhebber nog meer Doug:quote:On the neck of the jersey, as well as on our vehicles, we carry the African proverb “Ubuntu” (I am because we are) to reflect that as a team you cannot exist in isolation.
TO SEE TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS ON THE START LINE
Team Qhubeka ASSOS founder and Team Principal, Doug Ryder, says that he was “very emotional” watching the team race for the first time in 2021, during the opening stages of Étoile de Bessèges, in France.
Team Qhubeka ASSOS (formerly NTT Pro Cycling) is Africa’s only UCI-registered WorldTour cycling team and came very close to closing down at the end of 2020, after struggling to find a title sponsorship amidst the global Covid-19 pandemic.
The end of the team would have ended the main pathway for riders from Africa hoping to ride in the pro peloton, and also bring the curtain down on Ryder’s dream, just five years after gaining access to cycling’s highest level.
“Watching the team on the road in our first race of 2021 was gratifying as there were so many times towards the end of last year, and in the last three months in particular, that we didn’t think that we would exist in 2021.
“To see Team Qhubeka ASSOS standing on the team presentation podium in our black and white ASSOS strip with the neon hand and details on the kit was incredible, and very emotional. We’ve always dreamed of having a team called “Qhubeka” in the peloton and to see it come to life this season is incredible and the next step in our journey. Thank you to all of our partners for making that happen, we are very proud.”
The opening stage of the race saw the European and Italian champion Giacomo Nizzolo fight for a strong fourth place which he then followed up with an excellent third in a crash-marred second stage.
“The team performed so well and this speaks to our value system and culture of “Ubuntu” – that we cannot exist in isolation – I am because we are. A team of riders is made up of brilliant individuals and when they come together with a plan you can make magic happen; and to see the team commit to each other and bring Giacomo to the podium already in our first race in our first race for 2021, was really beautiful to see.
“It just shows how hard this team has worked and how committed they are to each other, to Qhubeka and to our goals as a team. That does bode well for the strong season that we plan to embark on this year with all the challenges that it faces from a human perspective, the travelling, the logistical and the events. The UCI as the governing body of the sport and all of us as teams are working really hard to support each other to make it happen.
“We believe that our team will motivate others and give hope and opportunity to people and continue to create social mobility across the African continent.
“So the year ahead for Team Qhubeka ASSOS is exciting and we are so pleased to be on the road. We thank our fans for their engagement, our current partners for their involvement and we look forward to bringing many new partners into this team as we continue to make an impact that really matters to those in need,” Ryder concluded.
Goed verhaal. As Africa’s only UCI-registered WorldTour team, the collaboration with Ludidi is not entirely coincidental: he has South African roots, as the son of a South African.

Qhubeka decline to comment on the monetary aspects of the long-term deal
Just two days before the start of the Tour de France, on June 24th 2021, Team Qhubeka Assos announced that it would now be named Qhubeka NextHash owing to a new five-year title sponsor partnership with the cryptocurrency startup NextHash Group.
Per the team’s press release: “NextHash is a global entity comprised of several units that combine the traditional financial industry with brand new digital class assets, by harnessing the power of blockchain technology.
"NextHash aim to make the digital, crypto and financial world accessible to all perfectly aligns with our team’s mission to provide a platform and an opportunity to those in need everywhere.”
NextHash is the brainchild of London-based Slovenian serial entrepreneur and angel investor Ana Bencic who, per LinkedIn, worked previously in the human resources industry before moving into the fast-moving cryptocurrency business, founding Nextinter, the parent company of NextHash in 2018. (NextHash itself was founded in 2019.)
Qhubeka NextHash has been in search for stability as far as sponsors are concerned in recent years, having already changed its title partners in both 2019 (to NTT Cycling) and 2020 (to Qhubeka-Assos). A financial deal that promises five years of support should in theory be a lifeline to the struggling South African team.
However, according to Slovenian news website Siol.net, Bencic’s enterprises haven’t always been stable endeavors. She recently came under fire for her involvement in the demise of British skills development company SkillsMatter.
Bencic and NextHash promised a three-million euro investment in the company, which never came, something the founder of SkillsMatter claimed directly caused that company’s insolvency.
In the same article, NextHash denies this, replying that the startup declined to finance SkillsMatter after receiving documents about the company’s financial situation. SkillsMatter aside, per the same article: “Ten of the eleven companies in Slovenia where she is currently listed as a founder, director or procurator have blocked or closed current accounts.”
NextHash is not the first investment of Slovenian cryptocurrency in cycling. Xaurum, a cryptocurrency backed by gold, became a naming sponsor of the Slovene continental team Ljubljana Gusto Xaurum (now Ljubljana Gusto Santic) in 2018, the team for which Tadej Pogačar was riding at the time. Xaurum pulled out quietly as sponsor at the end of the year presumably after the cryptocurrency lost 80 per cet of its value over the course of 2018.
When asked via email to speak to team management about the stability of the partnership and the allegations made about NextHash and Bencic in the Slovenian press, Qhubeka NextHash communications redirected CyclingNews to Matjaz Ivanusa, a representative from NextHash. Ivanusa had this to say via email when asked the same question:
“It depends what will be the agreement. NFT can be done as stable coins or they can be done as normal utility tokens. This needs to be discussed internally with your technical, management, and marketing team. I did not see the contract so for me it is hard to guess what is the arrangement. Hope my answer gives you some idea about your question.
"Slovenia is a special territory so we are moving our activities all our as inspectors, institution and also the government is not making it easier so we do not have time to prove our rights in courts. Long story short: online newspapers can write sometimes stories that are not true but articles still stay online. And for this company, we made the completely right decision.”

Management admit defeat with WorldTour team to fold
The management at Qhubeka-NextHash have told riders and staff that the team’s unsuccessful search for a WorldTour sponsor for 2022 has ended.
The team had already been denied a WorldTour licence by the UCI in early December but team boss Doug Ryder had attempted to keep negotiation channels open in the hope of finding a last-minute deal.
However, an internal communication, sent to all riders and staff, and seen by Cyclingnews on Thursday has confirmed that the search for a title sponsor has ended in failure.
In a statement send out on Thursday, Ryder states: “I am very sad to send this message. We have tried everything to find sponsors for our team for next season, right up until the last few days, but nothing has materialised in time.
“We have engaged with ten sports’ marketing agencies across the world and spoke to over one hundred companies. I am thankful to those of you who also supported us through talking to potential sponsors. There has not been a day that went by since NTT opted to end their support that we did not work on securing our long-term future.”
The team almost folded at the end of 2020 but were saved at the last minute when Assos agreed to step up and become the title sponsor of the squad. That gave Ryder a lifeline and it looked as though the team had at least another 12 months as the management continued to try and find a long-term backer.
On the eve of the 2021 Tour de France, NextHash were unveiled as the team’s new title sponsor and while the deal was reported to last five years the squad were dogged by financial issues. Riders and staff faced delays with their August wages and several sponsors were asked to provide early financial assistance when it came to their final investments. At the same time, several high-profile riders began to look for employment elsewhere and in the autumn the team notified riders that even if they had contracts for 2022, they were free to seek alternatives for the future.
During that period the team told Cyclingnews that they were committed to paying riders and staff, and that the search for a 2022 title sponsor would continue.
On December 14, the UCI confirmed that despite extending their licence process for several weeks in a bid to give the team every chance of finding the necessary funds to run a team, that time was up. Ryder was still determined to find a solution in order to keep the team going but on Thursday he admitted that every single avenue had been explored. In his letter to the riders and staff he paid tribute the vast support the team had received over the years, although he made no reference whatsoever to NextHash as a partner.
“I am so proud of what we have achieved together. The family spirit and feeling of Ubuntu was embraced by all of you on and off the bike. Never have I seen such unity and one united team spirit as what we had this year. You all have embraced the platform this team provides and grew as people united by our purpose. You should be incredibly proud of what we achieved together,” he wrote.
“I hope these feelings and memories will live with you as we go our separate ways in 2022 even with the last few challenging months. Our cash flow issues due to sponsors not paying on time, or at all, has really impacted on us.”
Ryder did confirm that the team’s Continental set-up will continue in 2022 and that he would try and put together a top-flight team in 2023.
“Thank you to all of you as Team Qhubeka is loved by so many people around the world. Even though we will not be in the World Tour or a Pro Continental Team next season, we will continue with the Continental team. The support of emerging talent is incredibly important for us to rise again in 2023. This is our goal.”
Tja, dit is er niet helemaal uitgekomen, zeg maar.quote:Qhubeka ASSOS has signed an agreement with Sport Support, a sports agency that specializes in signing sponsorship contracts. The goal is to collect ¤ 45 million in sponsorship funds within three years.
SportENDs is headquartered in Dublin and should attract business partners and sponsors of Qhubeka ASSOS in the coming years. The two sides hope to raise fifteen million euros every year. The South African WorldTour team hopes to grow financially and achieve more successes in the sporting field.
“As a small cycling team from Africa, we’ve made huge strides, but now we’re advancing in technology,” says Doug Ryder, team leader. “We have a busy schedule and therefore it is imperative that we have the financial resources. We are glad that we can now work with SportENDed.”
“The aim is to attract sponsors who believe in our vision. Sponsors who want to join our adventure and who also want to support us.” SportENDs also represent more than 500 athletes from Great Britain and the United States.

We are deeply saddened to confirm that our hopes to race as a UCI WorldTour team in 2022 are over. This follows an extensive global search, during this unprecedented time, to secure the long-term future of the team.
In the last few days, our final possibility to continue at that level was not able to be concluded, and so the decision has been taken for the WorldTour operation to cease on 31 December, 2021.
This is an extremely disappointing moment for our organisation. As a team that from the outset has strived to play a hugely progressive step in cycling through our partnership with the Qhubeka Charity, highlighted by our unique purpose-led approach, to not be able to continue to do so in 2022 comes as a significant loss to the cycling world.
Our list of successes on the bike has seen us experience incredible highs. Many will remember the amazing achievements of Gerald Ciolek, Steve Cummings, Mark Cavendish, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Ben King, Omar Fraile, Kristian Sbaragli, Ben O’Connor, Giacomo Nizzolo, Victor Campenaerts and Mauro Schmid raising their hands in delight crossing the finish line – in celebration of our purpose.
As important are the moments that saw Nic Dlamini and Daniel Teklehaimanot make history in riding the Tour de France for us, highlighting of the challenges African riders face just to get the opportunity to race in Europe like in the case of Negasi Haylu Aabreha, the inspiring group of young club riders from Khayelitsha who traveled with us to the Grand Depart in Brussels, and of course the incredible Qhubeka Charity – to name just a few. Our team has been a home for one and all, and carried the hopes and dreams of a continent and far beyond.
A Qhubeka bike distribution ceremony is still one of the most incredible events one can attend. One that in a single moment illustrates completely the true value of a bicycle, and the role that it has in changing lives.
We want to thank all of our fans for their incredible, unwavering support, and for placing your trust in us for being at the forefront of changing our sport. For that we will forever be grateful and so we hope that you will continue to support us into the future as we now take the next step in our journey.
Make no mistake, this announcement is one that weighs heavy but now more than ever has invigorated and motivated us to rebuild and to once again stake a claim to be racing on the sport’s biggest stage, and all while ensuring that we continue to offer a platform for talent from Africa to progress to the very highest level.
To that end, Team Qhubeka will continue to operate as a UCI Continental team in 2022, which is based in Italy, with our goal to return back to the top-tier in the near future. Our support for the for the Qhubeka Charity is unwavering for whom to date we have raised significant funds and awareness.
Further details will be communicated in due course.
Douglas Ryder – Team Principal
On Thursday I sent an internal message to our staff and riders to tell them the news. It was one of the hardest things that I’ve ever done in my life. The responses have been so emotional and supportive.
It gave me such faith and belief that what we have done here is truly unique; when you work in an environment that has a bigger purpose and impacts others positively then it no longer feels like work.
We’ve seen that spirit – Ubuntu – firmly take hold this year and extend beyond our team into our fan base and into the media; so brilliantly documented in Rouleur magazine after Victor Campenaerts’ stage victory at the Giro d’Italia.
We rose as Africa’s team from South Africa, to include all of Africa; from road cycling to mountain biking to women’s cycling and finally focusing on taking an African-registered road team to the Tour de France.
We moved through the ranks, from a Continental team to a Pro team winning Milan Sanremo, a Monument, in our first season to becoming a WorldTour team for the last six years. We have moved Africa forwards in cycling, we have moved people through Qhubeka and we will continue our movement that bicycles do change people’s lives. Having the world championships take place in Rwanda in 2025 is a testament to so many working together and believing in Africa’s potential.
To not have a team from Africa in the top two tiers of men’s cycling is a significant moment and something for us all to reflect on, particularly in light of where the world and sport is at the moment. We’ve had some incredible interactions during our search for a title partner in order for us to secure our future but unfortunately we were not able to conclude a deal in time.
But Team Qhubeka is still moving forwards, our Continental team will be racing and we have other exciting projects and ideas that will see us continue to use our platform to change lives with bicycles. Our work with the Qhubeka Charity has truly inspired us, and will continue to do so. It should be a story that inspires all of cycling and beyond, and we want you to be a part of our journey.
To all of our former, current and future partners I want to thank you for your faith and belief in what we want to achieve. One thing I can absolutely guarantee is that we’ve always given our absolute best, and you have our commitment to do so in the future. To all our staff and riders past and present thank you for your dedication and support, see you soon.
