Dat gedoe met die visa is echt dodelijk, inderdaad. Maar dat geldt niet alleen voor de Eritreeërs, ook gewoon voor Zuid-Afrikanen zelf. Stefan de Bod heeft dit jaar amper iets kunnen rijden omdat hij maar een beperkt visum kreeg. Hij mocht maar een paar dagen dit jaar in bepaalde landen zijn, dus dan ging hij tussendoor een paar dagen trainen in Kroatië of all places.

Het gaat echt helemaal nergens over, en ik hoop dat er ooit iets op gevonden kan worden. Het afgelopen WK bijvoorbeeld deden er amper Afrikanen mee, omdat ze stomweg geen visum kregen. Zelfs KUDUS, toch al jaren prof, kreeg gewoon geen visa en kon dus niet meedoen. Hoe kan zoiets bestaan? Dat je niet aan iedereen zomaar een visum geeft snap ik, maar we hebben het hier over profs. Over jongens die hun brood verdienen met wielrennen, wat dus nogal wordt bemoeilijkt door dit soort bureaucratisch geneuzel. Je hoeft niet bang te zijn dat iemand als KUDUS in je land gaat blijven als je hem een visum geeft, en dat geldt voor meer van die jongens. Ik vind dat de UCI hier wel een grotere rol in mag spelen. Als je een WK wil organiseren moet je kunnen garanderen dat iedereen die startrecht heeft ook echt mee kan doen. Als je een belangrijke koers wil organiseren: hetzelfde verhaal. Als je het van de landen laat afhangen wordt dit nooit opgelost en zal Afrika altijd een ondergeschoven kindje blijven.

Enfin, Andre Greipel schijnt in beeld te zijn. Africa's Retirement Home wil de gemiddelde leeftijd nog wat verder omhoog zien te krijgen.

From Eritrea, Natnael Tesfazion will continue with us in 2020 and he will be joined by compatriot, Henok Mulueberhan Solomon. Negasi Abreha, who at just 18 years of age, was crowned the elite Ethiopian National Road Champion this year, will be joining our squad for 2020.

With our four u23 Italian riders from 2019 all turning pro in 2020, we will see an all new Italian quartet next season. Samuele Rubino, Leonardo Marchiori, Riccardo Bobbo and Mattia Guasco will don the blue NTT Continental Cycling Team colours next season.

Finally, we are delighted to confirm that for the first time, our team will have two Zwift Academy winners in our line-up. 2018 winner, Martin Lavric, will continue for his 2nd season with us while the 2019 Zwift Academy winner will be crowned at our December training camp, and fill the final spot on the NTT Continental Cycling Team roster.

Riders registered with a development team may participate in UCI ProSeries or Class 1 events with the related UCI World Team at any time in the season. This will create opportunities for young riders that were not there before and make the NTT Pro Cycling team stronger. We are better together.

Prima renner, maar niemand geeft een fuck om Marokkaantjes. Hij is volgend jaar geen belofte meer en dus moet hij oprotten bij NTT. De nieuwe ploegen staan blijkbaar niet in de rij.

Bij Mugisha staat er Elite-2, hij gaat naar de Franse amateurploeg La Roche-sur-Yon Vendée Cyclisme. Ook een aflopende zaak, vrees ik. Kan best wat koersen gaan winnen daar, maar verwacht niet dat ooit nog een fatsoenlijke ploeg toe gaat happen.

Ook de Ethiopiër Million Beza moet oprotten. Geen idee waar zijn toekomst ligt, maar dat zal ook wel niet al te rooskleurig zijn. Qua leeftijd had hij nog een jaar kunnen blijven, maar ze zijn blijkbaar niet echt van hem overtuigd. Heeft ook niet echt reclame voor zichzelf gemaakt, dat is dan wel weer zo.

De nieuwe renners zijn vier Italianen waar ik over het algemeen nog nooit echt van had gehoord. Marchetti ontbreekt, die werd toch vrij lang met de ploeg in verband gebracht. Rubino komt bij de ploeg van Contador vandaan, waar hij verdomd weinig liet zien. Werd een jaar eerder wel Italiaans kampioen bij de junioren, zou dus toch wat moeten kunnen. Marchiori en Bobbo zijn op het oog vrij matige sprinters. Guasco heeft amper koersen gereden tot nu toe, geen flauw idee wat voor renner dat is dus.

De winnaar van de Zwift Academy van vorig jaar mag blijven, de Sloveen Martin Lavric. Kan er geen reet van, vrij onhandig besluit dus. En dan komt de winnaar van de Zwift Academy van dit jaar er ook nog bij. Dat wordt een van de volgende drie:

Drew Christensen is een junior die dit jaar best aardige resultaten boekte, derde in de Junior Tour of Wales bijvoorbeeld. Die andere Nieuw-Zeelander kan er volgens mij geen reet van. Heeft vooral de mazzel dat de Nieuw-Zeelanders in deze periode van het jaar altijd in vorm zijn omdat er allerlei koersen in Nieuw-Zeeland en Australië worden afgewerkt. Twee jaar geleden won ene Ollie Jones, ook uit Nieuw-Zeeland, die daarna het hele jaar niets liet zien en weer werd afgevoerd. Misschien die Zwift Academy een keer midden tijdens het seizoen plannen in plaats van aan het eind van het jaar, ofzo. Of er gewoon helemaal mee stoppen, het Afrikaanse wielrennen heeft er in ieder geval geen kut aan. Mathijs Loman kan er eveneens geen reet van, geen idee hoe hij de finale heeft gehaald. Weinig deelnemers waarschijnlijk.

Dan houden we de vijf Afrikanen over. Of nouja, 4,5. Connor Brown heeft jaren in Nieuw-Zeeland gewoond en daar ook gefietst, maar voor NTT gaat hij door het leven als Zuid-Afrikaan. Hij reed vorig jaar al voor de ploeg en deed dat niet eens zo onverdienstelijk. Hij won een tijdrit in het Italiaanse amateurcircuit en in Zuid-Afrika won hij een rit in de Tour de Limpopo. Verder blonk hij ook weer niet echt uit, ik denk niet dat we deze jongen terug gaan zien in de WT. Nee, dan heb ik meer hoop voor Natnael Tesfatsion. Sterke renner, die aardig kan klimmen en ook nog eens behoorlijk snel is. Viel helaas meteen tijdens de eerste dag van de Tour de l'Avenir uit, maar de rest van het jaar liet hij zo nu en dan wat flitsen van klasse zien. Mooi dat hij nog een jaar de tijd krijgt om zich nog wat meer te tonen.

Er komen drie nieuwe Afrikanen bij, terwijl er vijf vertrekken. Geen genot, we moeten het ieder jaar met steeds kleinere kruimels doen. Enfin, de drie nieuwe namen zijn wel behoorlijke schoten in de roos. Marc Oliver Pritzen, kortweg Marc Pritzen toonde zich vooral in het begin van het jaar. Won in Zuid-Afrika de Tour of Good Hope bijvoorbeeld, je zou voor minder. Dankzij deze goede prestaties kwam hij tijdelijk in Spanje terecht, waar hij een paar koersen reed voor de amateurploeg Super Froiz. Dat viel niet echt mee, maar eenmaal terug in Afrika won hij wel mooi de Tour de Windhoek. In principe verwacht ik wel wat van deze jongen, een van de betere Zuid-Afrikanen.

Henok Muluberhan hoef ik verder niet te introduceren, daar heb ik het al vaak genoeg over gehad. Deze jongen moet gewoon de WT halen, net als Tesfatsion. Geen gezeik, hup. Ook achter de Ethiopiër Negasi Abreha sta ik volledig. Als eerstejaars belofte meteen kampioen van Ethiopië geworden, Tsgabu Grmay had geen antwoord paraat. Heeft een tijdje bij de afdeling van het WCC in Zuid-Afrika gereden en daar ook aardig wat koersjes gewonnen. Ik had gehoopt dat NTT hem zou halen en dat doen ze dus, een klein en heel kort applausje is wel op z'n plaats. Niet alles is dood en verderf.

De vier Italianen zijn helaas nodig - volgens Doug dan - om op een Italiaanse licentie te kunnen rijden, waardoor de Afrikaanse renners makkelijker een visum kunnen krijgen. Dat offer valt dan nog te verantwoorden, het is alleen lichtelijk lachwekkend dat we lastig worden gevallen door die Zwifters. Dat heeft tot nu toe nog niets opgeleverd en als ik naar de finalisten van dit jaar kijk blijft dat ook zo. Die twee plaatsen had je prima op kunnen vullen met Afrikanen, dan had je wel kunnen beweren dat het echt om het ontwikkelen van Afrikaans talent ging. Maarja, goed. Dit is op zich nog wel goed nieuws:

Geen idee hoe dit in de praktijk gaat werken, maar er bestaat dus een mogelijkheid dat enkele renners van de opleidingsploeg kansen gaan krijgen op hoger niveau. In de praktijk zullen ze dan wel die Italianen de kans geven, leer mij deze ploeg kennen.

Om toch nog positief af te sluiten: Cummings met pensioen, JAAAAAAAAA! Nooit meer die lapzwans in laatste positie zien rijden, genot. De laatste jaren voegde hij echt geen reet meer toe, eigenlijk een schande dat hij nog zo lang voor de ploeg heeft mogen rijden. Sowieso heeft NTT Meintjes al om de laatste positie in te nemen, Cummings was echt volledig overbodig geworden.

Dit jaar reden er negen Afrikanen voor Africa's Team, het nu al geslaagde eerste jaar van het belachelijk professionele en revolutionaire NTT zullen er slechts zeven Afrikanen in dienst zijn. Na acht jaar trouwe dienst zat er geen nieuw contract in voor Jacques Janse van Rensburg en Jaco Venter. Betrouwbare knechten, die zijn vervangen door Europese, Oceanische en Aziatische middelmaat. Aangezien verder niemand op Zuid-Afrikanen van 32 jaar zit te wachten besloten Jacques en Jaco het roer volledig om te gooien. Ze gaan allebei mountainbiken!

Blijkbaar reden beide heren in 2007 samen de Cape Epic. Nu, 12 jaar later, gaan ze dat nog eens dunnetjes overdoen. Lekker hoor, cirkeltje rond enzo.

25 minuten Zwiftpropaganda voor de liefhebber. Al is het eigenlijk geen propaganda, want *spoiler* degene met de slechtste resultaten heeft uiteindelijk een plekje gekregen bij het continentale team.

Ondanks het feit dat de andere finalisten beter waren krijgt Drew Christensen een plekje bij de continentale ploeg omdat ze bij hem meer potentie zien. Oftewel, dat gebeuk op een hometrainer slaat allemaal nergens op, want qua resultaten had deze jongen niet eens de halve finale gehaald, laat staan de finale. Hij is wel een stuk jonger dan de andere kandidaten, dat zal uiteindelijk de doorslag hebben gegeven ofzo. Hoe dan ook, bijzonder.

Ook bijzonder, trainingskampje in Spanje. Men gaat nu niet eens meer naar Zuid-Afrika om fietjes van Qhubeka uit te delen. Het wordt schraler en schraler.

NTT Pro Cycling has today announced that it has joined forces with Virtu Cycling, a Danish group of cycling-related activities, in a newly established partnership, effective immediately.

The parties have agreed a deal which sees Virtu Cycling invest in one third of the shares of theoperational company behind NTT Pro Cycling. Together, the partners will seek to continue the development of the team from both a sporting and an organizational perspective, with a view to long term sustainability and success into the future.

This partnership naturally sees the continued commitment and support of the Qhubeka Charity, which incredibly distributed its 100 000th bicycle in 2019.

Virtu Cycling is co-owned by former Tour de France winner, Bjarne Riis, and businessmen and entrepreneurs, Lars Seier Christensen and Jan Bech Andersen.

Riis will take on the role as Team Manager of NTT Pro Cycling and will build on its sporting development, together with its sporting staff and the technology-driven approach to performance.

Bjarne heeft een langetermijnplan. Hij kijkt meteen een jaar of 100 vooruit.

Voorlopig is het helemaal geen slechte deal. De ploeg krijgt een financiële injectie en Doug kan een deel van zijn verantwoordelijkheden afschuiven richting iemand die in het verleden duidelijk heeft laten zien over meer capaciteiten te beschikken.

Op de lange termijn gaat dit natuurlijk niet werken. Einde Doug komt vroeg of laat.
