Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on Saturday wrote a letter to Attorney General William Barr that "heads must roll" regarding Jeffrey Epstein's apparent suicide after his body was found and it was reported that he had been take off suicide watch.
"The Department of Justice failed, and today Jeffrey Epstein’s co-conspirators think they might have just gotten one last sweetheart deal,” wrote Sasse, who chairs the the Senate Judiciary Oversight Subcommittee, in the letter.
“Every single person in the Justice Department — from your Main Justice headquarters staff all the way to the night-shift jailer — knew that this man was a suicide risk, and that his dark secrets couldn’t be allowed to die with him," he added. "Given Epstein’s previous attempted suicide, he should have been locked in a padded room under unbroken, 24/7, constant surveillance. Obviously, heads must roll.”
Sasse asked Barr whether Epstein had in fact been removed from suicide watch as The New York Times and NBC News reported and whether there would be investigations into the Bureau of Prison’s "mismanagement of the incarceration of Epstein."
"The Department of Justice should not have allowed this to happen," he wrote. "His death not only deprives his victims of the opportunity to confront him in court and to see him held accountable for his crimes, but also makes it harder to unravel his ring and to hold accountable the many other powerful men who raped and exploited these children."
The Hill has reached out to the Justice Department for comment on Sasse's letter.
Barr released a statement on the death in which he said “I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody. Mr. Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered."
The attorney general added in the statement that there would be an investigation into the circumstances of the death.
Epstein, a registered sex offender, was reportedly previously on suicide watch after he was found unconscious in his jail cell with injuries to his neck last month. Earlier last month he was also arrested and at the time of his death had been awaiting trial for allegations of sex trafficking of a minor

Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier facing charges of sex trafficking involving dozens of underage girls, was found unconscious in a Manhattan jail cell with injuries to his neck, US media reported late on Wednesday, citing unidentified sources.
Epstein was found by guards sprawled on the floor of his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) on Wednesday, it was reported.
The wealthy financier was taken to hospital, according to the New York Post, but it was unclear where he was taken or what his condition was.
It was not clear how he suffered his injuries. A source familiar with the situation told the Guardian that Epstein had allegedly been attacked. Two anonymous sources told New York’s local NBC News 4 that Epstein’s injuries may have been self-inflicted.
Epstein is now on suicide watch, according to multiple reports.
Lawyers for Nicholas Tartaglione, a former police officer charged in a quadruple homicide case who is also at the jail, responded to reports that he had been questioned in relation to Epstein’s alleged injuries.
“Any suggestion that Mr Tartaglione assaulted anyone is a complete fabrication. This story is being leaked to retaliate against Mr Tartaglione for complaining to the court about the deplorable conditions at the MCC,” Bruce Barket said in a statement.
“We made those complaints on Monday in open court. We warned the judge that officials at the jail would retaliate against Nick because we have been exposing the inhumane conditions at the facility.”
Neither a representative for the correctional centre nor Epstein’s attorney returned calls or email inquiries from the Guardian.
“Jeffrey Epstein is currently housed at MCC New York and not in a local hospital as has been reported. As with all inmates, for privacy and security reasons, we do not share information on an inmate’s medical status or their conditions of confinement,” the Bureau of Prisons said in a statement.
Epstein was recently denied bail, a move his lawyers plan to appeal against, according to a court notice made public on Tuesday.

Edit; hmm toen ik m'n nagels aan het knippen was bedacht ik me dat ie misschien niet zou willen dat men het als een zelfmoordpoging zou omschrijven omdat ie daarmee onder suicidewatch zou komen te staan.

Ongelofelijk dat iemand als hij zelfmoord heeft kunnen plegen.
Aan de andere kant zal dit wel een positief effect gaan hebben op de zaak in het geheel. Veel meer mensen die nu wél zullen durven praten en die dat eerst niet durfden uit angst.
Verder kan ik me voorstellen dat ze nu al zijn bezittingen op zn kop kunnen zetten. Epstein kan immers geen bezwaar meer aantekenen.
