On Monday, Book, a Democrat, wrote a letter to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis asking him to authorize a probe into how Epstein, accused of molesting dozens of underage girls and a registered sex offender, was permitted to leave the Palm Beach County Jail and spend much of his 2008-2009 incarceration in an office in West Palm Beach.

DeSantis said Thursday after a Cabinet meeting that he would “certainly consider” an investigation but that he has yet to decide how the state should respond.

“I saw someone sent me a letter. I looked at it,” he said. “I’ve got to figure out what the proper role of FDLE [is]. I know they are investigating it down in Palm Beach. ... Clearly when you look at how that happened, if even like 10 percent of the things about him are true, then that whole agreement was obviously suspect and willfully below what he should have faced.”

While the governor was still weighing the merits of the senator’s request, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office issued a new statement that its previously announced internal affairs investigation of the deputies who guarded and supervised Epstein during his work release had become a criminal investigation as well. No further elaboration was provided.

Meanwhile, Book, in an interview with the Herald, said she had asked the Capitol police, who handle security for state lawmakers, to look into claims made on a Russian website alleging that Bradshaw was behind an effort to access her phone and emails by using the pretext of “imminent danger’’ to obtain her personal information.

“I’ve received countless phone calls saying ‘Little girl you don’t know what you’re getting into,’ and telling me that I should just stop,’’ said Book, a child sexual abuse survivor herself who has worked to pass strict sex offender laws in Florida.

In a statement, PBSO said it had no knowledge of anyone trying to threaten or pressure Book.

Bedreigt worden omdat je opheldering wil over zijn straf, de beerput gaat diep. Zal de zaak van 2008 alsnog verdere gevolgen krijgen? Eerst maar het interne onderzoek afwachten va Palm Beach office zelf. Maar elke weldenkend persoon zal daar sowieso zijn vraagtekens bij hebben, zeker als je ziet wat er allemaal mocht tijdens zijn straf.

A tired-looking Mr. Epstein rested his chin on his folded hands as Judge Berman spoke.

Mr. Epstein, 66, has been housed at the federal jail in Lower Manhattan since his arrest on July 6 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey after a flight from Paris.

On July 18, Judge Berman denied the former financier’s request to be granted bail and to await trial under house arrest in his $56 million mansion on the Upper East Side; Mr. Epstein even offered to pay for 24-hour security guards to ensure he did not flee.

Judge Berman found that Mr. Epstein’s “past sexual conduct is not likely to have abated,” and he expressed concern that if Mr. Epstein were released, he would continue to abuse teenage girls. The judge also concluded that Mr. Epstein was a risk to flee, citing his “vast wealth,” which prosecutors have placed at more than $500 million, including private planes and residences in New York, Paris and the Caribbean.

Questions about Mr. Epstein’s health arose after he was found last Tuesday injured and unconscious on the floor of his cell, with bruising around his neck. His injuries were not serious, one law enforcement official said at the time; and another person briefed on the matter said officials had not ruled out the possibility that he had been assaulted by another inmate or had staged the incident. Officials had not commented about the episode.

Mr. Epstein had been housed in a cell with Nicholas Tartaglione, a former police officer facing murder charges, in a special unit with strict security measures intended to separate certain inmates from the jail’s general population. A lawyer for Mr. Tartaglione, Bruce Barket, said last week that Mr. Tartaglione and Mr. Epstein got along well, and “any insinuation that he had assaulted Mr. Epstein is a complete and utter fabrication.”

Het is dus in die zin niet de NYTimes die het lager schat en ook niet dan alle andere bronnen, maar de afdeling financiën van de stad New York. Misschien dat ze hier voor kiezen, omdat het in berichtgeving een iets neutralere bron is dan de openbaar aanklager in geval van een rechtszaak al weet ik dat niet zeker. Misschien dat een journalist hierover wat kan zeggen?
