King Crimson ontstaat in 1969 uit het trio Giles, Giles & Fripp. Bassist Peter Giles geeft er de brui aan en samen met blazer/zanger Ian McDonald, zanger/bassist Greg Lake (die Peter Giles vervangt) en tekstschrijver Peter Sinfield vormen drummer Michael Giles en gitarist Robert Fripp King Crimson. Ze maken 1 album, het legendarische In The Court Of The Crimson King, een van de allereerste progressieve rock albums en een voorbode van compromisloze en grensverleggende stijl van King Crimson.
Tijdens opnames voor het nieuwe album In The Wake Of Poseidon is de band alweer uit elkaar aan het vallen (en zeker niet voor de laatste keer!). McDonald en Giles nemen samen een album op en Greg Lake heeft er ook geen zin meer in en vormt Emerson, Lake & Palmer. In een rommelige periode met veel personeelswisselingen (oa Mel Collins, Keith Tippet en Gordon Haskell) en een even rommelig album, Lizard, lijkt er in '71 weer een stabiele formatie te zijn met Ian Wallace op drums, Boz Burell op bas/zang, Mel Collins op toeters en de onvermijdelijke Robert Fripp. De band toert uitgebreid door Europa en de VS en nemen 1 album op, Islands. Maar ook deze samenstelling houdt niet lang stand, in '72 houdt King Crimson op te bestaan.
Niet veel later blaast Fripp de band weer nieuw leven in. Bassist/zanger John Wetton, drummer Bill Bruford, violist David Cross en percussionist Jamie Muir vormen samen met Fripp een van de succesvolste incarnaties van de band. Na een paar optredens en de opnamen voor het "debuut"album Larks'Tongues In Aspic verlaat Muir de band en de rest tourt bijna een jaar onafgebroken. Tussendoor komt ook nog Starless And Bible Back uit, dat bijna geheel uit zorgvuldig opgepoetste liveopnames bestaat. King Crimson staat ondertussen bekend als een waar live-beest. Ze staan bekend om de improvisaties en de ongenadig hard spelende rime sectie. Zo hard dat tijdens de VS tour in '74 David Cross besluit om te stoppen, hij komt met z'n viool niet meer over het lawaai heen. De band neemt in '74 Red op, een geweldig album maar de zwanenzang voor King Crimson. Fripp heeft er genoeg van en trekt de stekker eruit...
Robert Fripp trekt zich geheel terug uit de muziekwereld, zelfs uit het sociale leven, totdat hij aan het einde van de jaren '70 weer langzaam z'n entree maakt. Na sessiewerk en als producer (oa bij Talking Heads, David Bowie en Peter Gabriel) maakt hij in '79 een soloalbum, Exposure, en vormt hij daarna The League Of Gentlemen. In '81 besluit hij tot een een terugkeer in de, zoals hij het zelf noemt, de eredivisie van de popmuziek en vormt de band Discipline. De band bestaat verder uit oudgediende Bill Bruford, gitarist/zanger Adrian Belew en bassist Tony Levin. De eerste optredens worden lyrisch door fans en pers ontvangen en na een visioen (!) hernoemt Fripp de band tot King Crimson. Het eerste album heet nog wel Discipline en is een bonte mengeling van rock, jazz, wereldmuziek, en minimal music zoals Steve Reich. Ook nu is Crimson een live-act van formaat, maar het opnemen van nieuw materiaal gaat een stuk moeilijker. In '82 verschijnt Beat en in '84, na een aantal zeer moeizaam verlopen sessies Three Of A Perfect Pair. De band tourt nog een keer door Japan en Noord Amerika en dan is voor Fripp de koek op. Voor de derde maal maakt hij een einde aan King Crimson.
Fripp gaat zich bezig houden met Guitar Craft, een soort zweverige masterclass in gitaarspelen maar maakt voor zichzelf een belofte dat Crimson halverwege de jaren '90 weer zal verschijnen. Ook doet hij weer regelmatig sessiewerk, o.a. voor David Sylvian en het is Sylvian die hij in '91 vraagt als zanger voor het nog te heroprichten King Crimson. Sylvian bedankt voor de eer, de twee nemen nog wel een album op en ondernemen een tour met in de band twee leden van het toekomstige Crimson, drummer Pat Mastellotto en bassist Trey Gunn. In 1994 acht Fripp de tijd rijp en King Crimson verschijnt als het zgn. dubbeltrio: Twee drummers, twee bassisten en twee gitaristen. De band bestaat uit de "Discipline"-samenstelling en de twee eerder genoemde Gunn en Mastellotto. In '95 verschijnt THRAK en is een combinatie van de stijl uit de jaren '70 met die van de jaren '80.
Om nieuwe inspiratie op te doen splitst de band zich tussen '97 en '00 in verschillende subgroepjes, de ProjeKcts. Bruford is dan al vertrokken, hij kan zich niet vinden in de electronisch getinte koers die Fripp wil volgen en Levin heeft geen zin om te wachten totdat Fripp weer eens zin heeft en wordt in de wachtkamer gezet. Het overgebleven kwartet maakt in '00 The ConstruKction Of Light en in '03 The Power To Believe.
En toen werd het lange tijd stil ..... Trey Gunn heeft de band eind 2003 verlaten, Fripp maakt er geen geheim van dat hij een hekel heeft aan touren en is voornamelijk bezig oud materiaal te recyclen. Wel zijn er begin 2007 oefensessies geweest met Fripp, Belew, Levin en Mastelloto.
In 2007 wordt bekend dat Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison zich heeft aangesloten als extra drummer. In 2008 word er een klein aantal concerten gegeven, maar er wordt geen nieuw materiaal opgenomen.
Per 1 september 2014 is King Crimson weer aan het touren.
De lineup bestaat uit : Gavin Harrison (drums), Bill Rieflin (drums, keyboards), Tony Levin (bass, Stick), Pat Mastelotto (drums), Jeremy Stacey (drums), Mel Collins (saxofoon), Jakko Jakszyk (zang, gitaar) en uiteraard Robert Fripp (gitaar).
Er zijn nog steeds geen plannen voor een nieuw studio album. De focus ligt op "reconfigured versions of existing Crimson material" ; opvallend voor een band die altijd erg terughoudend was met het spelen van oud materiaal.

50 Collectors’ Club Releases
2019 will see the release of CLUB48, CLUB49 and CLUB50 - the final three in the Collectors Club series, taking it 50 releases in the band’s 50th year. CLUB48 will be a recently discovered board recording of the concert in Newcastle on 8th December 1972 by the complete Larks Tongues in Aspic line-up before Jamie Muir left the band.

Alle concerten van the Projekcts 1/2/3/4 ! 4 + 35 + 5 + 7 = 51 shows dus ?!! Plus alles van Projeckt 6 (belew+fripp) waarvan nog nooit iets op cd verschenen is.
De Rieflin / Gunn / Fripp opnames die met terugwerkende kracht inderdaad prima tussen de Projekts passen ( Rieflin was toen nog geen lid van Crimson ).
Nog verrassender is het opnemen van BPM&M. Vooral een hobby project van Pat.
De twee studio albums zijn flink aangevuld zo te zien. Ik hoop vooral op eindelijk een complete studio opname van The Deception of the Thrush (dus anders dan de korte "The Power to Believe III: Deception of the Thrush").
En dan nog een flinke stapel live cd's. Ja, daar wordt ik ook blij van. 2000/2003 was toch ook wel een periode met heel veel improvisaties tijdens de concerten. De Heavy ConstruKction box was een aardig voorproefje wat dat betreft, maar er moet veel meer zijn.

De vraag is natuurlijk of FOK King Crimson dan nog bestaat. Geruchten dat dit een afscheidstour is worden overigens nadrukkelijk tegengesproken door Fripp &Co. Op zich al bijzonder dat ze al weer een jaar of 6 bezig zijn in (bijna) dezelfde samenstelling. Een nieuw record ....

As part of King Crimson's 50th-anniversary celebrations the series of special KC boxed sets will be made available once again for fans who might have missed them first time around. A statement from Panegyric on the boxes.
"When we started compiling and making these sets, they were announced in good faith as once off limited editions. It's usually the case that this is all that's possible - given the prohibitive expense of running second or shorter runs. However, with some fans telling us that they could now only obtain sets at inflated secondary market prices and if we had plans to reissue, we asked our manufacturers if it would be possible to do a second, limited run (1,000 units) of each of the sets simultaneously with the manufacture of the forthcoming Heaven & Earth boxed set - knowing that some of the manufacturing parts are common/shared.
Fortunately this has proved possible and as the main aim of DGM is to serve King Crimson music, it's appropriate that all of these sets should be available during King Crimson's 50th anniversary year.
Heaven & Earth should be available by the end of May as planned. The existing sets will all be available again by mid-June.
A Complete 1969 recordings boxed set is scheduled for release in October."

Is die Tour Diary 2014-2018 gewoon verkrijgbaar bij de merchandise ?
Lijkt erg op de 4cd Audio Diary 2014-2017 maar dan met 1 extra disc , die vorig jaar onderdeel was van de King Crimson Royal Package.Die heb ik later op discogs gekocht :

Barst, zou er dan volgend jaar een zes-cd-doos komen met ook 2019 erin?
We hadden plaatsen vooraan op het balkon. Na de toegift Starless een minutenlang applaus. Uiteindelijk verliet het hele balkon de zaal, terwijl men beneden nog volop aan het juichen was. Ook wij gingen naar beneden en daar hoorden we hoe het publiek nog tekeer ging. Toch even kijken ... en ja hoor, daar kwam de band opnieuw het podium op. Nu niets meer verplicht zitten. We maakten 21st Century mee vanaf halverwege de zaal beneden. Leuke opmaat voor de openluchtfestivals waar KC nog gaat spelen.
Niet eens uitverkocht, er was nog plek zat op de balkonnen. Ook hier de toegift van 21CSM. Hoogtepunten voor mij waren Level 5, ITCOTKC en One More Red Nightmare.Audio Diary 2014-2018 gekocht. Nu nog twijfelen of ik morgen ook zal gaan.
Morgen weer, vast weer andere nummers.

Volgens wikipedia is zijn partner, Francesca Sundsten, eerder dit jaar overleden.
Sundsten is bij ons vooral bekend van het artwork voor Crimson van de laatste jaren.

King Crimson have taken the difficult, but inevitable decision to postpone this summer’s tour of North America for a year. Although it is possible that some venues in the US and Canada may open again in time for shows this June and July, there seems little possibility that the threat from Coronavirus will have completely faded – and we have no desire to risk the health of the band, the crew or the audience. No-one should have to decide between a concert and a threat to their health.
We have been in discussion with the various concert promoters, all of whom remain very keen to host King Crimson shows, and it is our intention wherever possible to play exactly the same dates with the Zappa Band on very similar dates in 2021. The rescheduled dates will be confirmed over the coming weeks.
This should leave fans with the option of either ticket refunds, or attending the rescheduled concerts next year.
In the coming week, we will also be contacting all those who have bought Royal Packages directly from DGMLive so that they can make the same decision.
In the meantime, we wish everyone the very best of health, and hope to see you next year.

What next for King Crimson?

Interpreting Fripp’s pronouncements about the movements and intentions of King Crimson isn’t always an easy task even for seasoned Crim-watchers. This is, after all, a band that has previously “ceased to exist” on at least four occasions over its eventful and occasionally turbulent 52-year history.
But although we’ve learned never to say never with King Crimson, with members not getting any younger, and along with the complexities and uncertainties for large-scale touring in the wake of Covid not going away any time soon, it does feel as though time has finally been called on what has been a remarkable musical journey.
The three-drummer iteration of King Crimson has been the longest-running in the band’s history. With numerous live releases documenting their dramatic and sometimes revelatory reinvention of material old and new, they never recorded a studio album. It seems unlikely that they will do so now. However, with every gig the band ever played in its 8-year reign nestling safely in the archive, it’s certain there’ll be a few more live albums along the way to keep avid Crimheads happy.
So where next for Fripp and company? We know Gavin Harrison has his calendar filled with Porcupine Tree dates, and Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto are touring together in their Stick Men trio with Markus Reuter next year. Mel Collins and Jeremy Stacey remain in-demand first-call players whose telephone will no doubt be ringing off the hook and Jakko Jakszyk is already at work on his next solo album. Fripp himself has indicated that he’ll be performing a series of soundscape concerts in the USA in 2022 that will also include a Q&A session with Fripp and KC manager David Singleton, and of course, there's always the possibility that he could reactivate his 'wild card' guitarist mode, something that has happened whenever King Crimson has come to a standstill in the past.
And who knows, the emergence of a different albeit non-touring King Crimson line-up could once again take us all by surprise the way it did in 2014. Fripp also says ‘a completion is a new beginning,’ so perhaps we shouldn’t be too quick to write the band’s epitaph just yet? As ever, when it comes to King Crimson, there are always more questions than answers.
Gelukkig heb ik ze zes keer mogen zien en horen (Utrecht 2015, Aylesbury 2x 2016, Amsterdam 2018, München 2018 en Stuttgart 2019) en de herinnering is groots. GROOTS.
Ja, die laatste jaren waren echt onverwacht, en boven verwachting goed. Het had voor mij altijd al een beetje het gevoel van een afscheidstournee. KC was altijd een band die niet terugkeek, en zelden oude nummers speelde. Door de focus nu opeens wel op de oude nummers te leggen had het meteen het gevoel van een afsluiting. Dat dat 8 jaar zou duren had niemand durven hopen denk ik.
Misschien jammer dat het nooit tot een nieuw studio album is gekomen, er was genoeg materiaal denk ik. Aan de andere kant zijn er genoeg liveopnames, ook van de veel nieuwe nummers, dus het is ook niet heel erg.De focus lag duidelijk op wat anders - concerten geven. En dat was prima !

After King Crimson's dissolution in 1974, Robert Fripp embarked on a lengthy sabbatical away from the
public eye. His relocation from Great Britain to New York in February 1978 marked his return as a
producer, solo artist, and 'wild card' collaborator with an impressive roster of artists including Daryl
Hall, Blondie, Peter Gabriel, and David Bowie. Fripp's first solo album, Exposure, was released in 1979. A
further two solo records, Under Heavy Manners/God Save The Queen and Let The Power Fall followed,
and in 1980 he formed The League Of Gentlemen. Described as a New Wave dance band, this led to King
Crimson's reformation in 1981.
Presented over 25CDs, 3DVD discs (audio only), and 4 Blu-Ray discs (audio only), this is the most
comprehensive and detailed account of Robert Fripp's solo material from that era, much of it previously
unreleased. Included are new stereo, 5.1 Surround Sound, Dolby Atmos and Surround/Quadraphonic
mixes by Steven Wilson and David Singleton. Also featured is the complete DGM archive of
Frippertronics - over 68 hours of Frippertronics concerts and loops archived and audio restored, with the
majority of these available for the first time on disc and many heard for the first time since they were first
performed and recorded between 1977 and 1983.
This set is a fitting testament to an intensely creative and radically diverse chapter in Robert Fripp's

This newly mastered audience recording is one of the few recorded examples of that tour. Also included are recordings from LOG rehearsal tapes made by the band & first broadcast on the John Peel Show on the BBC in November 1980.
