Hoewel gebaseerd op de eindstand Piquet idd de titel zou verliezen in 1983, zou hij hem niet verloren hebben als het in 1983 zo zou gelden, want dan had hij de laatste race gewonnen. Hij reed namelijk aan de leiding toen Prost uitviel, schonk vervolgens de zege aan zijn teammaat Patrese, maar liet ook nog om onduidelijke redenen De Cesaris voorbij, waardoor Piquet 3e werd.quote:
