https://www.reddit.com/r/(...)ource=reddit-androidquote:I know many of you are familiar with this [Speculative Bitcoin Price/Adoption Theory](https://medium.com/@mcase(...)-theory-2eed48ecf7da) written back in December of 2016; I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet here over the course of this correction.
Like many of you, I'm a long-term bull and believe this technology (crypto/programmable money in general, not necessarily any particular token dominating - or even in existence - right now) will dramatically change just about every industry, much like the internet changed/continues to change how humans the world over live, work and play.
It is also my belief that all humans share a common nature, rooted heavily in our biology/evolved cognitive structure, such that a random sample of humans, when put in a particular position or presented with new information, will tend to react in a (fairly) predictable way. Much like water takes the shape of its container without changing its core chemical properties, human nature adapts to new circumstances/environments using the same biological programming we developed hunting and gathering on the African savanna hundreds of thousands of years ago.
This is why bubbles have formed in the past, continue to form in the present, and will surely form again in the future. Until humans change their genetic code, we will continue to play out the same stories our ancestors did. "What has been will be again; what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."
All of this is a fancy prelude to saying that crypto may have just finished another hype cycle.
Crypto, like all new technologies, is not going to be adopted by the entire population at once. The ideas inherent in this space take a LOT of time to digest, especially for those not already financially red-pilled. You have to un-learn quite a few things before you can even begin to comprehend true financial reality.
Risk aversion (like many personality traits) is also unevenly spread throughout the population, so by definition you'll always have just a handful of innovators/early adopters, compared to the majority who only ever follow the crowd. Hence the bell curve/S-curve of adoption.
However, like any good idea whose time has come, this one can't be stopped, and instead continues to spread throughout the population like a virus. And every time a new group of people is "infected," they play out the same story the last group did, that of a Gartner hype cycle:
* intense excitement and irrational exuberance over their newfound paradigm;
* a resultant disappointment when the new idea doesn't cure cancer overnight;
* disillusionment and fear that their newfound belief isn't the truth they thought it was;
* and finally hope once they see progress being made (e.g. Bitcoin "refusing to die").
Every time a cycle plays itself out, the number of true believers/long-term holders increases, and the price floor of a given asset rises due to this restriction in supply. Those who haven't bought in yet (the folks directly to the right on the bell curve of adoption) eventually notice this new, higher floor, and start considering the idea a bit more seriously. As these new adopters begin to dip their toes in, speculators return, long-term holders become even MORE entrenched in their convictions (having survived yet another bear market), and the cycle begins anew. Given an ever-present, unchanging human nature, there is no reason to think this cycle won't continue until the entire population is onboarded.
It's increasingly looking like 2015 was our boring trough; 2016/2017 was our volatilic rise; the blow-off top/height of irrational exuberance took place in late December; and we currently find ourselves in the midst of the crash. I expect prices to go much lower as even the strongest hands start to doubt their convictions, those who bought in during August/September/October begin to watch paper profits disappear, and the mainstream media once again launches the full force of their FUD against an outside system they can't control that threatens to rob them of their power. My guess is we bottom at ~$3k BTC.
As frustrating as this might be, the upside is that we have almost certainly hit the elbow point on the S curve of adoption. The last two years has seen too much exposure, too much development, too much adoption for the genie to be put back into the bottle. The growth of a permission-less industry that runs 24/7 all over the world and captures the imagination of those involved with almost *religious* conviction will only compound on itself from here. Whether we're at "early adopters" or "early majority," either way we are still very much in the early days.
Many people are lamenting the possibility of a multi-year bear market like that of 2014/15, and while certain black swan events (like nuclear war or a global financial meltdown) could certainly lead us down that path, I'm more of the opinion that 2018 will be similar to 2013, which saw two hype cycles for Bitcoin roughly six months apart. I wouldn't be surprised if we're back to bull by June.
My biggest concern at this moment is not whether (or even when) crypto will rebound, but if technological development and the resultant data it produces will outpace the market's ability to continue speculating. It's easy enough to say "If Ethereum becomes the backbone of a decentralized internet of money handling trillions of dollars a year then ETH should be worth $XXXXX" when we're still building the infrastructure itself and these ideas remain far enough out of our reach for us to viably place a value on them. There's a fair (almost certain) chance, as we work our way through the remaining hype cycles, that valuations get so out of whack that they'll simply never match up to the reality on the ground.
Fortunately for most of us here I think we're still a good year or two away from that. Like many of you, I love this space and could not be more excited to see a decentralized future come to fruition, but I plan to scale out the majority of my holdings as the next cycle plays itself out. The hype cycle theory should work well until the majority of the population is on board; after that I might have to look for a new theory/mental model with which to plan and structure my investments.
As a valedictory from someone who lurks often but rarely posts, I'd like to thank the regulars here for their contributions, both TA and fundamentals, and encourage my fellow lurkers to speak up when they have value to contribute. This sub is an oasis of rationality in a desert of insanity, and I imagine we'll need each other more than ever this year as we work towards sticking the rocket landing on our own personal moons.
