The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (often shortened to the Cup Series) is the top racing series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR).
Cup Series cars are unique in automobile racing. The engines are powerful enough to reach speeds of over 200 mph (320 km/h). But their weight coupled with a relatively simple aerodynamic package make for poor handling. The bodies and chassis of the cars are strictly regulated to ensure parity, and electronics are traditionally spartan in nature.
The championship is determined by a points system, with points being awarded according to finish placement and number of laps led. The season is divided into two segments. After the first 26 races, 16 drivers, selected primarily on the basis of wins during the first 26 races, are seeded based on their total number of wins. They compete in the last ten races, where the difference in points is greatly minimized. This is called the NASCAR playoffs.
The series holds strong roots in the Southeastern United States, with half of the races in the 36-race season being held in that region. The Daytona 500, the most prestigious race, had a television audience of about 16 million U.S. viewers in 2009.

2017 Season
The 2017 NASCAR Cup Series will be the 69th season of professional stock car racing in the United States, and the 46th modern-era Cup series season. The season will begin at Daytona International Speedway and end with the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Jimmie Johnson enters as the defending champion, having won his record-tying seventh Cup championship that he shares with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.

NASCAR officials found a loose lug nut on the race-winning No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota following Kyle Busch’s victory in Sunday’s Overton’s 400 at Pocono Raceway.
Busch’s victory was his first of the 2017 season and broke a winless streak that dated back to Indianapolis in 2016, a stretch of 36 races.
The NASCAR Rule Book suggests a $10,000 fine to the crew chief (in this case Adam Stevens) with no suspension as punishment.
The No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford of Trevor Bayne and the No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. also were each missing one lug nut in post-race inspection. Crew chiefs Matt Puccia (No. 6) and Brian Pattie (No. 17) are subject to the $10,000 fine with no suspension, as suggested in the NASCAR Rule Book.
