Briton Will Stevens loses Formula One drive with Manor to announce his departure

Exclusive: Stevens will be replaced by Indonesian backed by £10m in sponsorship from oil company but hopes to return to Formula One

Stevens, 24, spent last season with the minnows but is understood to have been replaced for 2016 by Rio Haryanto. The Indonesian is bringing at least £10 million in sponsorship in large part thanks to backing from the country’s state oil company.
The news comes as a bitter blow for the Englishman just a week before the first pre-season test in Barcelona. Stevens is likely to try racing elsewhere, perhaps in America, before seeking again to make it in Formula One.

It also means the number of British drivers in the sport will remain at three, with triple world champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, Jenson Button at McLaren, and rookie Jolyon Palmer at Renault.
In his year in the sport Stevens has struggled to make an impression, with Manor so far off the pace in 2015. But with a Mercedes engine in this year’s car he would have had more of a chance to show what he could do.

The announcement of Haryanto, expected in the next few days, brings to an end protracted and increasingly fractious negotiations between Stevens’ representatives and Stephen Fitzpatrick, the energy millionaire who owns the team.
Haryanto will be partnered by Mercedes protégé Pascal Wehrlein, who was announced last week.
Stevens made his debut with Caterham in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2014, before joining the revived Manor outfit this time last year. Unless there is a miraculous reversal of fortunes over the next 12 months, it is hard to see Stevens racing in Formula One again.
The driver from Rochford, Essex, brought his own sponsorship package last year – around £6 million – but could never match the demands made by Manor and what Haryanto was able to offer. Alexander Rossi, the American, had also been in the frame for the drive.
Stevens’ departure and Haryanto’s arrival completes the line-ups for the 2016 season. The other late change was Pastor Maldonado’s replacement at Lotus by Kevin Magnussen.
Manor have had a turbulent few months with Graeme Lowdon and John Booth, former sporting director and team principal respectively, leaving over a disagreement with Fitzpatrick. Several other senior staff followed.
But under Dave Ryan, the former McLaren team manager who lost his job there after the ‘Lie-gate’ scandal in 2009, Manor have begun rebuilding, hiring two former Ferrari designers.

Honda’s revamped 2016 Formula 1 power unit is reportedly more powerful than its predecessor, but still unreliable according to Marco Canseco, the correspondent for sports daily Marca.

McLaren-Honda debuted its novel, ultra-compact ‘size zero’ concept last year, where the tight packaging of the rear was possible because the turbo is located actually inside the ‘vee’ of the engine.

According to Motor Sport magazine, the Honda turbo is bigger for 2016, with Yasuhisa Arai confirming that it will be “around the same size” as the Mercedes unit. The ‘size zero’ concept, however, is staying.

Writing in Marca, Censeco said Honda test-bench runs since the first full 2016 chassis was put together confirm the turbo V6 is now more powerful but “the new turbo repeatedly breaks”.

And “apparently there are still overheating problems, even though the new (turbo) now works at lower rpm of about 100,000 compared to the 120,000 of last year”, Canseco added.

Marca said that after Sunday’s online launch of the MP4-31, it is believed Fernando Alonso will be at the wheel on the opening day of Barcelona testing.
