France international Dimitri Payet is set to make his return from an ankle injury in the new year, West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic has said.
The former Marseille attacking midfielder was expected to be out until February after sustaining the injury in last month's 1-1 draw with Everton. But Bilic says the 28-year-old's recovery is going ahead of schedule and he could be involved as early as the league match against Liverpool on 2 January.
"It is good news with Dimitri as he is ahead of schedule, so he should train with us after the Villa game or the Southampton game," Bilic said. "He is training with the fitness coaches and he might be involved in the Liverpool game which is a big boost.
"At the beginning we thought he would be back in February but he is way ahead of schedule and it is not that bad. His ankle is very good - it is stable - so it is great news if it goes like this."
West Ham have drawn their last four matches and have not won since beating Chelsea 2-1 in October, drawing five and losing two of their seven matches since. They travel to Aston Villa on Saturday before hosting Southampton two days later.
Payet made an impressive start to life in the Premier League this season, scoring five goals in his first 12 league matches before suffering his injury.

Louis van Gaal has stormed out of his press conference, blaming the media for rumours regarding his position.

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Van Gaal's assistant Giggs have been touted as possible successors. And Van Gaal came out fighting when asked about his position, launching a stinging attack on the media over the speculation about his future before storming out of the room.
Van Gaal said: “Has anybody in this room not a feeling to apologise to me? That’s what I’m wondering.
“I think I was already sacked, I read. I have been sacked. My colleague (Jose Mourinho) was here already. What do you think happens with my wife or my kids? Or with my grandchildren? Or with the fans of Manchester United? Or my friends? What do you think?
“They have called me a lot of times and also Arsene Wenger is saying something about that. So you think that I want to talk with the media now. I am here only because of the Premier League rules. I have to talk with you.
“But I can only see when I say something that you use my words in your context. And I want to say only I have tried to lift the confidence of my players. I have done everything this week.
“I held meetings with the players with my members of staff, I hold a Christmas lunch, I did a speech and I feel the warmth and support of everybody in Carrington, this AON training complex.
