The offices of a prominent Israeli human rights group have been damaged in a blaze that local authorities are investigating as a potential arson attack.

B'Tselem, which documents Israel's human rights abuses in the occupied Palestinian territories, said in a statement that "the fire brigade reported the damage to our office is extensive" after the incident on Sunday.

Firefighters evacuated the building and extinguished the flames, while a handful of Israelis gathered near the site to celebrate, according to the local 972 Magazine blog. No casualties were reported.

The fire comes at a time when Israel's right-wing government is advancing a new bill sculpted to label human rights groups as "foreign entities", while a pro-settler group has launched a campaign to paint rights groups as "foreign agents".

"If it is discovered that this was an arson attack, it must be seen in the context of the wave of government incitement and smear campaigns against Israel's human rights groups, and B'Tselem in particular," the group said in its statement.

"Naturally, the damage to our offices will not stop our work of documenting and exposing the harm to human rights under the occupation."

Palestinian human rights groups are regularly closed down or raided by Israeli forces, while other Israeli groups have been targeted by ultranationalist Jewish activists in the past.

In late December, Israeli troops ransacked the offices of a Palestinian Authority-administered charity in Bethlehem and a prisoners' rights group in Nablus, both in the occupied West Bank.

Hardline Israeli settlers have carried out similar attacks - known as "price-tag attacks" - on Palestinians and their properties in the past. The term is meant to indicate that there will be a cost to Palestinians if the power of the settlers is challenged.

A Palestinian couple and their 18-month-old son were killed in July 2015 in an arson attack that is believed to have been carried out by settlers.

In November 2014, a Jewish-Arab coexistence school in Jerusalem was partially torched in an arson attack carried out by Israeli settlers, who left behind graffiti that said "Death to Arabs" and "You can't coexist with cancer".

Protected by the Israeli army, more than 547,000 Israelis live in government-funded, Jewish-only settlements across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Nadat het nieuws over de annexatie woensdag uitlekte, werd dat meteen veroordeeld door Ban Ki-moon, de secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties.

Ongeveer 550.000 Joden wonen en werken inmiddels op de Westelijke Jordaanoever en Oost-Jeruzalem. In het oosten van de stad leven eveneens 400.000 Palestijnen. Op de Westelijke Jordaanoever wonen nog eens 2,7 miljoen Palestijnen.

State Department backs Daniel Shapiro after he said Israel applies law in West Bank differently to Palestinians and Israelis

The US State Department has moved to back America’s ambassador to Israel in a febrile and escalating row over his remarks on Monday that Israel applied law in the occupied West Bank differently to Palestinians and Israelis.

Ambassador Daniel Shapiro’s unusually critical comments drew harsh criticism from ministers in Israel’s rightwing government – including from the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu.

Shapiro was also publicly lambasted on Israeli television on Tuesday by a former aide to Netanyahu who used the deeply offensive Hebrew word “yehudon” – which translates as “little Jew boy” – to disparage the ambassador. The term is used by rightwing Israelis against other Jews – particularly those in the diaspora – whom they regard as not being sufficiently Jewish or pro-Israel.

Netanyahu has described Shapiro’s comments as unacceptable and wrong, while the justice minister, Ayelet Shaked, has suggested that they were inappropriate and Shapiro should recant them.

“We are being subjected to a terrorist onslaught that is simply unfamiliar to the United States, and to pass judgment on us in such a one-sided manner is wrong,” Shaked told Army Radio. “It would be appropriate if he corrected himself, and I hope he does that.”

As the row continued into a third day, US State Department spokesman John Kirby insisted the ambassador was reiterating US policy on Israeli settlement construction. Kirby was speaking after a private meeting between Shapiro and Netanyahu to attempt to paper over the differences.

“Our long-standing position on settlements is clear. We view Israeli settlements activity as illegitimate and counterproductive to the cause of peace. We remain deeply concerned about Israel’s current policy on settlements including construction, planning and retroactive legalisations,” he said.

The latest row comes against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Israel and various countries and international political groupings.

Last year, Netanyahu’s government reduced diplomatic contacts with EU officials following a decision to recommend that member states label products produced in illegal Israeli settlements.

The Swedish foreign minister, Margot Wallstrom, has effectively been declared persona no grata in Israel after calling for an investigation into whether recent shootings of Palestinians by Israeli security forces amounted to extrajudicial executions. Israeli officials said her comments were “delirious”, while Netanyahu called them “outrageous”.

Israel also strongly condemned the decision this week by the EU foreign council to take up a new resolution strongly critical of continued Israeli settlement.

Israel finds itself facing renewed criticism from the European Union for the continued expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, a complaint that Shapiro echoed.

In remarks at a security conference on Monday – regarded as a showcase event for Israeli politicians and senior security officials – Shapiro said: “Too many attacks on Palestinians lack a vigorous investigation or response by Israeli authorities, too much vigilantism goes unchecked, and at times there seem to be two standards of adherence to the rule of law: one for Israelis and another for Palestinians.”

Kirby explicitly rejected Israeli claims that EU labelling of settlement products amounted to a boycott of Israel. “We do not view labelling the origin of products as being from the settlements a boycott of Israel. We also do not believe that labelling the origin of products is equivalent to a boycott.”

Media pundit Aviv Bushinsky, who served as Netanyahu’s chief of staff when he was finance minister in Ariel Sharon’s government, made the remarks on an Israeli political show.

“Nobody was standing there with a hammer forcing him [Shapiro] to say it,” he said on the programme.

“I see a Jew, Dan Shapiro, saying this. I see it as a pattern – it was the same thing with [former US Middle East envoy] Dennis Ross and now with [former US ambassador to Israel] Martin Indyk saying his nonsense. It’s the behaviour of Jews who are trying to show that they are extra leftwing, more liberal and more balanced.”

Some Israeli commentators saw it as no coincidence that Shapiro’s remarks were made so soon after the lifting of sanctions against Iran and at such a high-profile forum.

Writing in the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Shimon Shiffer said: “Shapiro’s comments … are significant in that they suggest the Obama administration will no longer tolerate human rights violations by our decision-makers against Palestinians in the West Bank. From the perspective of the White House, ‘enough is enough’.”

De regerende minister-president Benjamin Netanyahu schijnt onder de Israëlische bevolking flink wat sympathie te verliezen. De regerende Likoed-partij wordt zwakker, Yaïr Lapids Yesh Atid wordt sterker, de partij van minister van Financiën Moshe Kachlon, Kulanu, verandert daarentegen niet.

Een donderdag door het Israëlische dagblad Yediot Achronot gepubliceerde enquête liet zien hoe het volk momenteel zou stemmen. Netanyahu’s Likoedpartij zou in deze verkiezingen zeven van zijn in totaal 30 zetels verliezen, Lapid zou er negen zetels bij krijgen en daarmee op 20 zetels in het Israëlische parlement uitkomen.

• De socialistische Arbeiderspartij van Yitzchak Herzog, die zich Zionistisch Kamp noemt, zou van 24 naar 16 zetels dalen,
• De Nationaal-religieuze pionierspartij van Naftali Bennett, Bet Jehoedi (Het Joodse Huis) zou van 8 naar 13 zetels stijgen.
• Moshe Kachlon (Kulanu) zou een van zijn 10 zetels kwijtraken.
• Yisrael Betenoe (Israël Ons Huis) van Avigdor Lieberman zou van 6 naar 8 zetels stijgen.
• De links-liberale Meretz zou van 5 naar 7 zetels stijgen.
• De orthodoxe Knessetpartijen Shas (7) en Verenigde Thorapartij (6) zouden samen een zetel verliezen en op 12 zetels blijven steken.
• Ook de Verenigde Lijst van de Arabische partijen (13) zou een zetel kwijtraken.

Likoedkiezers benadrukten tegenover Israel Today dat Netanjahu een briljant politicus is. Hij zou weten hoe men verkiezingen wint, maar in de tussentijd moet het volk geregeerd worden en daarbij zou hij telkens weer falen.

Zelfs binnen de Likoedpartij is de partijleider niet geliefd, zegt men. Iedereen die hem op politiek gebied te na komt en mogelijk een concurrent voor hem zou kunnen worden, werkt hij de partij uit. Zo is het gegaan met Moshe Kachlon, Gideon Sa'ar, en bijna ook met de minister van Binnenlandse Veiligheid, Gilad Erdan.

Aan de andere kant moet moet men kijken hoe Lapid zich bij het volk geliefd maakt. In plaats van Netanyahu openlijk te bekritiseren, zet hij zich in het buitenland voor Israël in en verdedigt hij de Israëlische politiek, ook al is hij het niet in alles met Netanyahu eens. Lapid kan verweten worden dat hij uit de linkerhoek van de politiek komt, maar hij toont staatsmanschap en verantwoordelijkheid, waardoor hij een breed spectrum in het volk aanspreekt.

Bennett lijkt weer de Knessetzetels terug te winnen die hij in de vorige verkiezingen aan Likoed had verloren. Hij verloor toen enkele zetels doordat men Likoed wilde versterken ten opzichte van de linkse partijen. De ontevredenheid met Netanyahu’s politiek dringt religieuze kiezers steeds weer in de schoot van de Nationaal-religieuze pionierspartij. Maar zolang het volk niet echt kiest, blijft alles slechts theorie.

Om deze reden is de krappe regeringscoalitie van Netanyahu (61 zetels) zeer voorzichtig. Met tracht geen tactische fouten te maken die tot vervroegde verkiezingen zouden leiden. Maar als het toch zover zou komen, weten de Likoedkiezers zeker dat Netanyahu weer een tovertruc bedenkt om ook deze verkiezingen weer te winnen. Ook al heeft de oppositie het er voortdurend over hoe belangrijk het is om Netanyahu kwijt te raken, moeten ze toch eerst een alternatief vinden, en dat is tot nog toe niet gelukt.
