Terreurdaden
G. werd op 29 april gearresteerd op verdenking van het deelnemen en meewerken aan trainingen voor terreurdaden. Hij zat twee weken vast in de speciaal beveiligde gevangenis in Vught, voordat hij weer op vrije voeten kwam.

,,Als bewijs werd aangevoerd dat hij een baard van vier weken heeft en een lang zwart gewaad draagt'', zei zijn advocaat. ,,Ook was er AIVD-informatie dat hij naar Syrië of Libië wilde gaan. Dat alles mag, het is geen bewijs voor terrorisme.''

Ondanks zijn vrijlating blijft hij voor justitie een verdachte, aldus een woordvoerster van het OM in april.

Syrië
Eind 2013 kwam G. ook al in het nieuws, omdat hij samen met Omar H. plannen had gemaakt om deel te gaan nemen aan de jihad in Syrië. Hij werd veroordeeld, maar kreeg geen straf omdat hij volgens het OM volledig ontoerekeningsvatbaar was in de periode dat hij zijn plannen maakte.

G. werd samen met twee andere verdachten aangehouden op basis van informatie van de geheime dienst AIVD. De Nationale Recherche vond bij huiszoekingen in Rotterdam messen, een zwaard, een kruisboog, afscheidsbrieven, gepakte rugzakken en jihadistische geschriften. Ook in Doesburg en Utrecht werden woningen doorzocht.

Archaeological excavations in Iraq continue despite security chaos
NASIRIYAH, Iraq — At the beginning of February, a British archaeological excavation mission unveiled at the ruins of Ur a large trade center that is the oldest in the world, going back to the Old Babylonian period (2006-1595 BCE). Ur is a historical site in Sumer city mentioned in the Old Testament and located in Dhi Qar province, 375 kilometers (233 miles) south of Baghdad.

This discovery confirmed the exceptional importance of the ruins of Ur, which are still unexplored. Despite the poor security situation in Iraq, archaeological excavation has been accelerating in recent years, in search of ruins still buried in this area.

In early March 2013, a British excavation mission discovered the remains of a massive ancient temple by using satellite imagery.

Given the historical importance of Ur, Al-Monitor contacted journalist Alaa al-Kouli, who lives near the ruins of Ur and accompanies researchers and foreigners on their visits there. He proposed a field tour to visit the place of the famous Ziggurat, where the moon god Nanna was worshipped.

The drive from the center of Nasiriyah city is 16 kilometers (10 miles) into the desert part of Nasiriyah. As the features of the archaeological site appeared, Kouli pointed to the dozens of small and large hills that have not been explored yet. He also pointed to holes that he said were dug by thieves who made off with hundreds of artifacts. He said, “This happened especially in 2003, the year when the regime of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein fell and most of Iraq plunged into a massive security chaos.”

As he was talking, the famous Ziggurat of Ur appeared from afar. It was built by King Ur-Nammu in about 2100 BCE to worship the moon god.

After looking at the Ziggurat from up close, Kouli suggested a visit to the house where the prophet Abraham was born. Abraham’s life story appeared in the book of Genesis and in Quranic stories; he is called the father of the prophets. The house is located in what was possibly a residential complex, 500 meters (1,640 feet) from the Ziggurat. Muslims and Christians still visit it.

In fact, the whole place consists of ruins of houses and buildings in the vast desert. One can see the foundations of brick structures that were covered by sand for hundreds of years.

Among these ruins was a digger who declined to give his name. He told Al-Monitor that in the last few months the archaeological missions found a large number of clay documents inscribed with cuneiform characters as well as pottery and various other tools, which he saw himself.

The site had few visitors, most of them tourists from Turkey and Iran. A number of Iraqis were examining the place and taking pictures. There was a marked absence of signboards explaining what the visitors were looking at.

Al-Monitor contacted archaeological explorer Amer Abdul Razzaq, one of the supervisors of the excavation works. He described the ongoing excavations in Nasiriyah province, saying, “There’s an Italian team currently working in Tel Abu Tabiri in Nasiriyah city center and in Tel Zurghul, located in Diwaniyah province, 55 kilometers [34 miles] northeast of Nasiriyah. There is also a British team digging in Tel Khaibar, located in Batha, 35 kilometers [22 miles] west of Nasiriyah city.”

Abdul Razzaq shared the latest discovery: commercial records that include the distribution and the pricing of grains, dating back to the reign of the Babylonian King Hammurabi (1792-1750 BCE).

Abdul Razzaq said some concerns should be addressed, explaining, “Although there are some 1,200 archaeological sites in many areas of the province, there are no more than 100 guards. This tempts thieves to conduct illegal digs.”

On the positive side, there are a lot of on-site excavation activities. According to Ajyal al-Moussawi, the chairman of the Committee of Tourism and Antiquities in Dhi Qar, there is a promising future for archaeological excavations and for transforming this region into a modern tourist center that attracts investments and cash to the province. He added, “A French mission will dig in the Karso archaeological site, situated in Nasr, 60 kilometers [37 miles] north of Nasiriyah, in October 2015. There is also an American team that will start work in September. The American team is headed by Elizabeth Stone of New York University. In late 2015, an Italian team will dig in the city of Eridu, west of Nasiriyah.”

Much needs to be done to protect the ruins, said archaeological researcher and former history teacher Halim Yasiri. He told Al-Monitor, “The archaeological sites in Dhi Qar are constantly being looted, amid poor government efforts to protect those archaeological sites and turn them into tourist attractions. … Government officials announce that funds have been allocated for the rehabilitation of archaeological sites, but we see nothing of that on the ground. The indifference to Iraqi archeological ruins will cause them to gradually disappear.”

Yasiri pointed out that one of the biggest problems facing the ruins of Ur is “the military air base built on site grounds in the 1980s — the Imam Ali Air Base, which was built over ancient hills and caused noise and pollution.”

Today, there are hundreds of historical archaeological sites in Iraq that have not been excavated and are explored by thieves who steal priceless artifacts. The Iraqi government should benefit from Western expertise in the field of drilling and preserving antiquities. It should seek professional and technical help from UNESCO as well as experts to preserve antiquities and drill into hundreds of buried historical sites. These sites should be protected from theft and networks of antiquity traders through developed security measures. The historical sites should also be turned into touristic and research projects through investments that would provide the money needed for the protection and development of the sites.

On 10th June 2014, Da’esh/ISIL terrorists advanced into Baiji. The city remained occupied until mid-November, when it was announced that it “had been completely liberated” by forces belonging to the Iraqi Army and Hashd Al-Sha’abi (Popular mobilisation unit).

A 25 year-old local fighter from a well known Sunni tribe (Al-Jaysat) fought along Hashd Al-Sha’abi in Iraq’s Baiji, and made a diary blog entry (in Arabic) of his experience during the fight to retake the city. He was infamously known on social media as عراقي من المريخ (Iraqi from Mars).

The following is as close to possible a word-for-word translation of a blog entry of his, titled “I’m not a hero!”



In such circumstances not all characters can be written and not all emotions or scenes can be described.

South Baiji, – the farm that I set my feet on to be specific…

The land was not the same as what I am used to; the geographical change is clear through the shattered houses and the barely paved streets. The faces of the youth fighters and supporters of security forces and people of south, filled the streets of my city..

A few hundred meters separating each one of us from their city, from their village and memories, a police officer – a soldier – a Hashd – and even some office workers and I’m one of them here..

My facial expression changed for the better once I saw the faces of the absent people from months ago, parted since the Nakba (expulsion/exile) of 10/06/2014, and today most of us meet in the hope to liberate our city.

We went along; following the fighters from few months before us; to the headquarters for a small lecture by the commander of the Hashd and the city’s police commander, then we were distributed to our positions (points of defence) or the city walls. KPV-14.5 – 23-PKC – launcher – grenade -gun ammunition filled..

Amid anticipation and caution that was controlling the wall of defence, we were happy to an unspeakable degree, talking about our displacement experiment in the past months, which we all agreed it was similar to a prison.

Sunni militia fighting ISIS in IraqThe sounds of missiles and artillery and the sniper bullets almost never stop. We had strict instructions to not reveal our placements and houses in the daytime for fear of an ambush. The enemy who chooses to infiltrate dishonestly through the farms was not more than 200meters away from us.

Suddenly, the sound of screams rise louder than the sound of bullets, and we respond similarly and this carries on until they lose the battle and they fall dead, but we fall as martyrs, and they return in disappointment.

Chants resound after each battle and sometimes even before a battle starts. Dishonouring the dead corpse and mutilating became something normal like they do, how dirty is war!

When the enemy is able to make you succumb and stoop to their low standards, well this is also a disaster in itself. When you become the monster who emotionlessly shares images of dead corpses and faces torn apart, even under the pretext of this being a war of media and propaganda – this is the biggest loss, to lose your humanity in such a war!

Despite the filth of this war, you are compelled to fight, and it didn’t matter because we got used to it. What we got used to even more was how quickly the laughs shared can change to tears within a few hours at their loss and burial not more than 50 meters away from you. Sometimes we carry out 2 attacks per week, awaiting orders to leave our defence positions to join the frontline attacks. A lot of us haven’t been on vacation for more than a month, some here have completed three consecutive months, for free!

My friend, Baiji has become a piece of land that is not suitable for living, not even for animals. You can barely see any birds or even dogs passing by, as if it has become like Kobane or Hiroshima, insofar as destruction and [the scent of death] go. The sky has draped itself with blackness over the time period I have spent there due to the smoke coming out of the Baiji Oil Refinery, which is witnessing harsh battles.

In each spot contained within this land there exists a small battle that is part of a bigger war; on the Western Front’s outskirts on Hawal’li road in Al-Seeniyya City we can hear gunfire, and when night comes we can see the sky being lit up [with mortar rounds/fired shots(?)]. The same is also seen from the Northern Front (the oil refinery) which is less than 7 kilometers away from us in the farm we are positioned in, and as such we constitute the first line of defense against them [Da’esh/ISIL], as this area marks the end of the ‘land of Khuraafa’ [Khuraafa: Arabic for mythology; pun with Khilafa (caliphate)], all the way to the border of the ‘Wilaya of Raqqa’.

I feel a strange trance every time I glance at the flag that possesses the words God is Great (Allahu Akbar) as it flies over our position. A few meters, not more than 20, is where the `Sons of the South` [South of Iraq] are situated, those who came along to free our lands with us. Most of them are the sons of Naseriyya and Basra, as well as the champions of Karbala.

Part 1
In the morning we share our food as if we are one family, and in the night we aim towards the same enemy. Most of the time we trade bits and pieces of conversation regarding everything, even our personal matters.

What is beautiful about strangers is that they know how to listen without much of an effort. Sameer is one of Basra’s sons; newly married.
“What has brought you here, Sameer?”
He quickly answered, “Iraq!”

I was not surprised, as many have come for the same reason, but what did surprise me is his story; the pain he suffered due to his mother’s illness, and the loss of his brother; the tragic story that he denied me the permission of sharing with anyone else.

It’s the first time in years that I talk with someone from the other sect without discussing matters of religion. Most of our conversations were centered on traditions, jokes about our different accents and dialects, the mentality and thought process of our enemy, and about the politicians who have made us the ever burning fuel to their endless war for political gains and authority.

The sandbag barricades cover the positions of the soldiers/fighters, so if you want to move between positions you have to bend your back, avoiding stray bullets and the mortar shrapnel every time you hear the rockets whistle. Here, you will not be afraid!

The fear dissipates with your first arrival, for when you see all the soldiers’ faces covered with dust and sand, death becomes a normal matter. But the first time you climb up the hill for reception so you can manage to call your family and your children, and you imagine the state of your mother and father after your death, you start feeling afraid.

The phantom of death avoids you at times, and at times comes at you suddenly.

During resting periods, the spots at the back of the empty houses abandoned by their inhabitants is where it is most safe, yet most scary, where your mind is raided by dark thoughts, and if you are not overtaken by sleep, you have to get up and get going before you are captured by memories.

I lie down to sleep, and as soon as my eyes go towards the ceiling, I can see your picture come alive in everything, and if I look towards the sky I will see that mirage of you that will stick with me and keep me restless and awake, as if the smoke coming up out of the refinery shows a little bit of the eyeliner drawn on your eyes. Sometimes one prays not to see the one they love, not even in their dreams, because maybe then pain will strike its blow. It is enough to remain silent and look away, towards the hill covered with smoke.

It has been almost two months since I have seen your face. I wonder if I ever visit your dreams. If we possess pure souls, it is only the result of the love we share, a love unchained by fate and unwiped by death. I feel a weakness every time that picture of you comes to mind, like it is a prison that cannot contain me, and the only escape from it is to go towards it, as if it were Rome.

Often times after mental and emotional fatigue, one retreats to one of the houses’ rooms. You take a set of headphones with you to listen to something that makes you feel weak. And with the first memory, you are sure you have lost it.

When you miss them as much as the sky is vast, and you look around you and you cannot find the sound of the laugh of the one you love anywhere. When you try to meet them but find only their long absence. When you grab your phone to call them, only to find their phone turned off…You realize that in essence, they have actually changed their number so you cannot reach them.

You will feel regret when you imagine them with someone else who knows just how precious they are, only then will you realize that you have lost them so easily, without even thinking that your presence with them gave you the oxygen you breathed.

And now you sit alone, in your room. All the sounds have faded, and all that is left are the memories. And as you wake up from your somber weakness and you regain your strength, you will thank God that you couldn’t manage to send through that call to them.

Oh how many times have we got to a point of feebleness, looking at their number, and how many times have we written and written only to delete before sending, and how many times have we regretted sending… So do not be weak.

A sound from the back side of our position calls, “Anwar… Anwar”
I get up quickly, “Ghazwan, what has happened?”
His tears speak for him. They have killed his brother, Marwan. How, and when, and where?

They [Da’esh/ISIL] have uploaded his photo on social media and they have written on it, “A Member of the Hashd AlSha’bi”, but they have lied. They have arrested Marwan when they first entered in June ‘for the sake of investigation’, and at the time, there was no Hashd AlSha’bi in existence.

Their lying cannot be described in words, their deceitfulness cannot be counted in numbers, and their false excuses can fill up the inside of a deep well until it entrenches the core of the Earth. May Allah have mercy on you and your mother’s heart, Marwan, you are one of many who have been killed without having done anything incriminating.
The salt water from underground is the only water we can use, even in cooking sometimes, and if you manage to get some of the river’s murky water, you are considered one of the few lucky ones. Behind us, in the village of Jareesh that lies next to the river, there are some families that refused to leave their homes, and so their sons now stand with the security forces [resisting Da’esh/ISIL]. Homemade meals come to us on a weekly basis, and as simple as they are, we consider them an expensive commodity.

To die a free human being is better for you than to die under humiliation. You may lose a house or sacrifice a martyr, or you may lose a part of your body, but that is less harsh than living under the humiliation of the bastards [Da’esh/ISIL]. But the tragedy is that a lot are taking similar steps under the shadow of the state.

Ben je niet bang dat men alleen nog maar zogenaamd kundige soennieten voor elke functie zal vinden. Die dan onbewust de soennieten toch voordelen ten opzichte van de anders gelovigen gaan geven?
