Je kunt het hele politie apparaat daar moeilijk van racisme betichten, een groot deel ervan zijn namelijk zelf kleurlingen. Je kan je ook eens afvragen waarom zwarten daar zo agressief benaderd worden, als de reden ervan geen racistisch motief heeft.quote:

Het blijft makkelijk praten, hč, zo vanaf het internet, zonder je voor te stellen hoe een donkere man door het leven gaat. Die nog steeds als minder wordt gezien, als minderwaardig wordt behandelt en met vooroordelen te maken krijgt. En daar is het politie systeem onderdeel van het probleem, zoals het voorbeeld dat er 5x zoveel donkere mannen vast zitten voor marijuana, maar het aantal gebruikers niet 5x zo hoog ligt.quote:

Rather than recommend a charge, the elected prosecutor stood back and made the 12 jurors decide everything for themselves. “The argument can be made that this meant it was more likely that there would be no indictment,” said Todd Swanstrom, a professor in public policy at the University of Missouri-St Louis.
While a suspect does not normally testify in front of a grand jury, Wilson gave his version of events for four hours without the tough cross-examination of a proper trial. “A first-year law student would have done a better job,” said Benjamin Crump, Brown’s parents’ lawyer.
On Monday, in a rambling 20-minute speech, McCulloch spoke as if clearing Wilson had been the obvious conclusion. Amid accusations of bias, the prosecutor, a close ally of local law enforcement and the son of a St Louis policeman who was killed by a black man in the 1960s, refused to step aside and allow an outsider to oversee such a sensitive case.
Instead of delivering the difficult news with humility, McCulloch used his announcement as a bitter exercise in score-settling against the press, social media users and friends of Brown whom he effectively accused of lying by telling reporters that Brown had surrendered. Wilson claimed Brown first assaulted him after he tried to apprehend the 18-year-old for the theft of cigars at a nearby shop minutes before the shooting.
McCulloch also made the decision to announce there would be no charges at 8.30pm, as hundreds of demonstrators swarmed outside the police station in darkness. “It was the worst possible timing,” said Swanstrom.
“He incited a riot,” said Patricia Bynes, Ferguson’s exasperated Democratic committeewoman. “And then – kaboom – Ferguson explodes in front of our eyes.”

Jammergenoeg voor je woon ik in de VS, en jammergenoeg voor je ken ik ook donkere mensen, en helaas heb ik genoeg verhalen gehoord, uit het heden en verleden. Maar klaarblijkelijk is het te moeilijk voor je om je voor te stellen hoe iemand met een donkere huid anders wordt behandeld in de VS. Ik ben blank, en gelukkig geen ervaringsdeskundige in het worden behandeld als minder dan een mens, maar jij bewijst wel weer het inlevingsvermogen van een stoeptegel te hebben.quote:

White House officials said that controversial multi-billion dollar programs that transfer military equipment to local police departments will be near the top of the agenda when Obama meets separately with his vice-president, Joe Biden, and other cabinet officials.
The grand jury decision last week not to indict white police officer Darren Wilson over the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, prompted a night of intense rioting and looting in the St Louis suburb and triggered protests across the country.
Obama was quick to condemn the violence in Missouri, but acknowledged that wider complaints over discriminatory policing were valid and not unique to Ferguson. He said: “Communities of colour aren’t just making these problems up”.
A White House official said: “Recent events in Ferguson, Missouri and around the country have shone a spotlight on the importance of strong, collaborative relationships between local police and the communities they protect and serve.
“As the country has witnessed, disintegration of trust between law enforcement agencies and the people they protect and serve can destabilise communities, undermine the legitimacy of the criminal justice system, undermine public safety, create resentment in local communities, and make the job of delivering police services less safe and more difficult.”
The president’s response to one of the worst bouts of race-related rioting in a generation has been criticised by some for playing down the scale of racial bias in the criminal justice system.
Obama walked a fine line as protests raged in Ferguson, arguing that “the law too often feels as if it is being applied in discriminatory fashion”, but qualifying his remarks by saying racial bias was neither widespread or “the norm”.
The president’s afternoon of back-to-back meetings are intended to overcome the criticism of his leadership and to move forward policy initiatives begun in August, when protests over the killing of Brown, 18, began.
Those protests, most intense in August but which continued unabated in the months leading up to the grand jury decision, were met with a forceful response from heavily armed police using military-style weaponry as well as teargas and rubber bullets.
Senators and members of Obama’s cabinet, including his attorney general, Eric Holder, expressed concern that the transfer of equipment from the Pentagon could lead to militarised police forces.
Two weeks after Brown was shot, with protests continuing, Obama ordered a review of the programs, which transfer military equipment to local police departments. Teams of officers armed with assault weapons, dressed in military-style fatigues, were once again seen driving around Ferguson in armoured personnel carriers after last week’s protests turned violent, although the overall response by law enforcement was more calibrated.
A White House official said the cabinet-level meeting – the first of three meetings Obama is hosting on Monday – would “discuss” the review order by the president “and actions the administration is taking”.
The president will immediately after meet young civil rights leaders from across the country to discuss “broader challenges we still face as a nation, including the mistrust between law enforcement and communities of colour”, the official added.
Obama will host a third, separate meeting at the White House with elected officials, community, civil rights and faith leaders, and law enforcement officials from across the country.

While the NYPD actively monitors Twitter, Facebook and other social media for intelligence, sources said the official chain of command keeps squadrons of cops from moving around as quickly as protesters.
A “technology gap” also favors the activists, many of whom have the newest electronic gear, sources said.
“A lot of these anarchists are from the Occupy Wall Street group. They are little rich kids, little techie brats,’’ a source said.
“They get their money from Mommy and Daddy. And they travel from the West Coast to the East Coast and everywhere in between to disrupt events that involve corporate America, world summits, civil rights and especially those that involve law enforcement.”
“They have their little MacBook Air computers, their Wi-Fi, their smartphones, and they’re off to the races. We’re reacting to these situations, which means we are not fully in control of them,” the source said.
Authorities suspect “a few hundred” of the estimated 4,000 protesters who took to New York City’s streets after the Ferguson decision used their knack for mobile technology to send out real-time advisories on where cops were located and where they were headed.
“They were giving instantaneous commands to their followers, and this enabled them to stay one step ahead of us,” a source noted.
As a result, cops were left to race around the city to try to stem the disruptions.
The developments now have cops “very worried” about the upcoming ruling by a grand jury investigating Garner’s death, sources said.
The Staten Island dad died in August after being put in a police chokehold while being busted for allegedly peddling loose cigarettes.
NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo — who was recorded putting Garner into the chokehold — testified before the panel Nov. 21, and a ruling on whether to indict him could be announced as soon as Monday.
“We’re expecting strong reaction and demonstrations when the decision comes down,” one source said.
Another source said: “The cops on standby will be in riot gear. That means helmets and sticks.”
Since the success of Twitter and Facebook in fueling the Arab Spring uprisings that toppled regimes in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, US activists have increasingly used the Web to organize and mobilize protests.
Last week, hundreds of tweets directed protesters to Union Square to await the Ferguson ruling.
After the verdict, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton was splattered with fake blood, allegedly by “professional agitator’’ Diego Ibaņez, 26.
Plans to disrupt the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade included the Twitter hashtag #StopTheParade.
And activist Ben Norton — busted in July during a protest in DC with the CODEPINK anti-war group — tweeted out a parade map.

Een politieagent uit New York hield in juli de ongewapende Eric Garner in een wurggreep, die vervolgens overleed. New York maakt zich op voor grote protesten.
Agent Daniel Pantaleo zag Eric Garner op 17 juli illegaal sigaretten verkopen op straat. Garner protesteerde verbaal tegen zijn arrestatie, maar gedroeg zich verder rustig. Hierop nam Pantaleo hem in een wurggreep, wat volgens de richtlijnen van de politie in New York niet is toegestaan. Garner overleed in het ziekenhuis, als gevolg van de wurging.
Een omstander maakte met zijn mobiele telefoon videobeelden van de arrestatie. Daarop is te zien hoe Garner door verschillende agenten in bedwang wordt gehouden. Garner, die aan astma leed, zegt in de video niet meer te kunnen ademen. Nadat hij bewusteloos raakte is hij naar het ziekenhuis gebracht waar hij enkele uren erna overleed. Uit een medisch onderzoekrapport bleek dat hij mede als gevolg van de wurging is overleden.
In de dagen na Garners dood kondigde de politie van New York aan dat alle 35,000 agenten een extra training krijgen in omgaan met geweld. De familie van Garner heeft de stad New York aangeklaagd, net als verschillende agenten die bij de arrestatie betrokken waren. De familie Garner zegt verbijsterd te zijn dat er geen vervolging is. “O my god, are you serious”, was de reactie van Garners moeder op het nieuws.
In New York werden de afgelopen dagen al voorbereidingen getroffen voor mogelijke protesten. Een eerder protest rondom de zaak in augustus verliep vreedzaam. De uitspraak in Ferguson leidde in verschillende steden tot grote protesten en rellen die tot op de dag van vandaag duren.
”We gaan geen gewelddadige protesten zien zoals in Ferguson”, voorspelt de zoon van Eric Garner in een reactie. “Iedereen weet dat mijn vader niet gewelddadig was. Zij zullen hem herdenken door vreedzaam te protesteren.”
