New EU Sanctions to Come in Next Few Days, Finnish Minister Says

The European Union's latest sanctions against Russia are intended to come into force in the next few days, a Finnish minister said Wednesday.

"Their entry into force is intended to take place in the next few days, leaving time for an assessment of the [Ukraine] cease-fire agreement and the peace plan," Leena Toivakka, the Finnish Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade, said in a speech.

EU governments adopted the new sanctions on Monday but delayed enforcing them.

Israel To Provide Russia With Technology To Reduce Dependence on Food Supplies

MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) – Israel is ready to provide Russia with the necessary technology to help Moscow reduce its dependence on food supplies from abroad, Israel’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Yair Shamir told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

“If the Russian government makes the decision that it wants to build farms to produce this and that and that, we are able to do that. Easily. We have done it in Belarus, we have done it in many other countries in a relatively short time. The results are fantastic. We are also a source of technology and know-how. And we are ready to do that,” Shamir said.

“Once the government wants to go for big production lines in order to get independence we can help easily. We are in the top niche. You are getting the best of the best available today in the market. Most of the people dealing in it speak Russian or at least have a Russian accent,” he added.

Yair Shamir said that Tel-Aviv sees Western sanctions against Russia as an opportunity for Israel to advance into the Russian market.

“For us it is a great opportunity. Absolutely. Even if the sanctions are reduced I believe our products will continue to flow into Russia. It will be easier to deal with us, it will be cheaper and more stable with no political price tag for what you do and what you don’t,” he added.

Shamir also expressed confidence that trade between Russia and Israel could increase rapidly in the context of current political situation.

“It can go up to a billion of dollars. Easily. Of course it will not be 40 billion that Russia used to buy from Europe. But I think we can get to a billion dollars. Easily. In the short term,” the minister mentioned.

MOSCOW, September 8 (RAPSI) – Soldiers’ Mothers of St. Petersburg NGO protest against labeling the organization as a 'foreign agent' and want the Ministry of Justice to remove it from the blacklist, Kommersant newspaper reported on Monday.

According to a federal law, which came into effect in November 2012, the NGOs engaged in political activity and receiving foreign funding are required to register as “foreign agents” with the Ministry of Justice. Last summer the law was amended, and the Ministry of Justice was authorized to add even unregistered NGOs to Foreign Agents List at its own discretion.

The Ministry of Justice blacklisted the Soldiers’ Mothers of St. Petersburg in late August.

Ella Polyakova, the head of the St. Petersburg branch of the Soldiers' Mothers group, argued that the NGO did not fall under the law because it did not receive any foreign funds and was not engaged in political activity. She vowed to contest the ministry’s decision in court.

Notably, the NGO was put on the list of foreign agents after Polyakova alleged in an interview with television channel Dozhd that Russian soldiers were paid to fight in Ukraine.

A group of Russian human rights activists challenged the controversial law in the Constitutional Court, which ruled last April that the law was valid. The court recognized the constitutionality of a legal provision that obligates NGOs to register as foreign agents.
