But, while the trucks came to a halt well short of Ukraine's border, a different Russian convoy did make the crossing into Ukrainian territory late on Thursday evening.

The Guardian saw a column of 23 armoured personnel carriers, supported by fuel trucks and other logistics vehicles with official Russian military plates, travelling towards the border near the Russian town of Donetsk – about 200km away from Donetsk, Ukraine.

Kan de roofing in brand steken, maar je hebt tijd genoeg om te verkassen. En zo wijd verspreid zal het ook geen verstikkend effect hebben.

Intense armed clashes are now in progress outside Donetsk, Luhansk and a number of other towns and villages in southeastern Ukraine, coordinator of the Kyiv-based Information Resistance group Dmytro Tymchuk said on his Facebook account on Friday morning.

"Armed clashes continue near Donetsk, Luhansk, Horlivka, Pervomaisk, Shakhtarsk (Molodetske), Torez, Popasna, Krasny Luch and Ilovayisk," he said.

"Fierce fighting" is under way for control over strategic motorways such as N21 near Shakhtarsk and M-04 near the villages of Novosvitlivka and Khreschuvate that link Donetsk and Luhansk with other insurgents-held areas, Tymchuk said.

The unlawful armed units resisting the Ukrainian army "are starting to relocate their personnel and hardware closer to the border with Russia," Tymchuk said.

"Obviously, the district of Sverdlovsk-Rovenky-Molodohvardiysk-Izvaryne, which has access to the border with the Russian Federation, will be the "last stronghold" of the militants," Tymchuk said.

The Ukrainian army's positions near the villages of Berezove, Ilyinka and Plotyna came under fire early on Friday morning, he added.

Eleven civilians have been killed in Ukraine's town of Donetsk since Thursday, and eight have been wounded, Town Hall reported on Friday.

Donetsk administration officials said fighting had taken place in the Petrovsky and Leninsky districts. The town was shelled with incendiary bombs, residents said.

"Residents of the Shiroky neighbourhood saw flashes in the sky at 23:00, Moscow time /19:00 GMT/, which supposedly were fire bombs," Town Hall's report said.

The town's 267 transformer station have no power, four neighbourhoods have no water supply and the local bakery and dairy plants are not functioning.

Latest Ukraine Gas Deal Will Irk Russians

Anyone who has been watching Ukraine politics won’t be shocked by Kiev’s latest jab to Russia. This time a natural gas deal that awards the U.S. and Europe. The sanctions have worked.

According to Russia’s state run RIA Novosti anyway, the Ukrainian parliament passed a law Thursday that allows the government to hand over 49% of the country’s gas transport system to investors from the European Union and the United States. That is quite different from actually doing it, but it opens the door to the West and opens the wound that the Russia-Ukraine political imbroglio has caused since February, when pro-Russia president Viktor Yanukovych was ousted from office by extra legal means.

The law allows foreign operators the right to “the management and/or concession or lease” of the gas pipelines and underground storage facilities, now dominated by Russia. The law also allows Ukraine’s government to establish a company to operate underground storage facilities, in which American and European investors can own up to 49%.

Russia has apparently been excluded from the investment scheme.

The International Monetary Fund required Ukraine’s government to reform its economy, reduce government debt, and open up its market to foreign investment.

Ukraine’s economy has been in the gutter for the past year and has been kept afloat by the IMF and aid money from the E.U. and U.S., which have served as the Welcome Wagon for Kiev’s move westward.

This particular law is just the first step in attracting foreign investors from the U.S. and Europe into important sectors of Ukraine’s economy. Prime Minister Arseniy “Yats” Yatsenyuk has been a staunch ally of Washington since taking over in February, so it is no surprise that the move awards U.S. and European corporations instead of Russian natural gas players.

The law is unlikely to be an obstacle to Russia’s plans to build the South Stream gas pipeline through Ukraine and into Europe. Russia is Europe’s No. 1 foreign supplier of natural gas and South Stream has majors like France’s EDF and Italy’s ENI on board as well.

Europe’s natural gas demand is seen hitting 80 billion cubic meters by 2020. By 2030 estimates put it near 140 billion cubic meters as local gas supplies decline. This means that there will be plenty of room for Russian and non-Russian gas to enter Europe.

South Stream connects from existing pipelines in Anapa, Russia, near the Black Sea, runs under water, then hits land again at Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia with the end point in Tarvisio, Italy. It will not touch Ukrainian soil. The politics of natural gas have often made Ukraine more foe than friend. Russia has turned off gas supplies to Ukraine on allegations that the country was keeping gas destined for Europe.

Ukraine and the West have been tag-teaming Russia for months. Sanctions against Russia began in March when the Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea, a former autonomous region of Ukraine, voted to secede and join the Russian Federation. Tensions began when Yanukovych rejected a trade deal with the E.U. in exchange for moving politically closer to Russia…and receiving nearly a 45% haircut on natural gas prices as reward.

Thousands protested against Yanukovych in the so-called EuroMaidan movement, ultimately leading to his downfall. Kiev divorced Moscow and quickly found a new lover. They’re now married and redecorating together.

Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine continue to be locked in battle, with east Ukraine cities still the scene of violent, civil unrest between Russian separatists and the Ukrainian military.
