Turkey puts real teeth in its non recognition of Russian annexation-of-crimea/

Staunton, July 5 – The 27 major Turkish ports that normally handle international shipping will not allow any ship to dock if it carries papers declaring that its home port in “Russian Crimea” rather than in Ukraine or has passed through such an occupied port, according to a decision of the Turkish council of ministers on April 30.

Specifically, according to media reports yesterday the Turkish government has directed its port officials not to accept any ship whose papers declare that it is from “Kerch/Russian Federation” rather than from “Kerch/Ukraine.”

While Russia may be able to make an end run around this limitation by falsifying the papers carried by ships it uses in or via Crimea, this Turkish decision will make it more difficult for Russian shipping and represents both the implementation of a clear-cut non-recognition policy and in particular Ankara’s support for the hard-pressed Crimean Tatars.

OSCE Contact Group Calls for Further Talks Without Delay

The OSCE has released a rather brief and vague statement on talks today about the conflict in Ukraine -- but at least there are talks:

The Trilateral Contact Group of senior representatives of Ukraine, the Russian Federation and the OSCE met in Kiev on July 6, 2014.

It discussed the present situation in eastern Ukraine, including modalities and the venue of further consultations with all actors involved.

On the basis of President Poroshenko’s Peace Plan and of the Joint Declaration of four Foreign Ministers adopted in Berlin on July 2, 2014, the Contact Group underlined that it was a matter of urgency to make concrete progress towards a peaceful settlement of the crisis.

The Contact Group is of the opinion that the next round of consultations should take place with no delay. It called on all actors involved to agree on the proposal of the Contact Group to hold the next meeting as soon as possible.

Gorlovka, Donetsk, Lugansk Remain Under Complete Control of Separatist Fighters

Three crucial cities in southeastern Ukraine remain under complete control of pro-Russian separatist fighters, UNIAN reported. And while some fighter fled Slavyansk, and have regrouped in Donetsk and environs, where they remain, they risk being turned in by their neighbors as control switches to the Ukrainian army. It is not clear how previous pledges to allow separatists to disarm and return to civilian life will be honored.

With the arrival of the ATO forces, local residents are changing their attitude toward the terrorists. Some of the fighters have fled, and some locals, who helped the extremists, are trying to blend in now with the mass of local residents.

However, today local residents turned over three such traitors who were standing in line for food in the liberated city. Defense Minister Valery Geletey made a statement about this.

A rail bridge over a main road leading into the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk has been destroyed by an explosion, blocking a key access route to the rebel-held city.


Ukraine: Bridge Explosions Block Roads to Donetsk

NOVOBAKHMUTIVKA, Ukraine — Three bridges over roads leading into the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk were destroyed Monday by explosions, blocking key access routes to the rebel-held city.

An Associated Press reporter saw one collapsed bridge in the village of Novobakhmutivka, where a rail line crosses over a highway leading out of Donetsk. The road leads toward Slovyansk, a former stronghold of the pro-Russian insurgents that was retaken by Ukrainian troops on Saturday after a night of intense fighting.

Anatoly Krasov, who was driving along the road on Monday, said he saw an explosion before the bridge collapsed with a large cargo train on it. He said he saw a group of men, wearing the camouflage uniforms often worn by the rebels, get in their cars and drive away from the bridge in the direction of Donetsk.

Two other bridges on roads leading from Slovyansk to Donetsk were also destroyed on Monday in the villages of Zakitne and Seleznevka, the Road Transportation Agency of Donetsk Region announced in a statement.

The bridges' destruction may be an attempt by the rebels to buy time and slow down any assault by Ukrainian forces on the city. Pavel Gubarev, the self-described governor of the Donetsk People's Republic, has promised "real partisan war around the whole perimeter of Donetsk."

The insurgents control the regional administration building and checkpoints on the city outskirts, and they were cheered by thousands of supporters waving flags from Russia and the self-proclaimed independent Donetsk People's Republic on Sunday. They also face little internal resistance from police forces or government officials, who have done nothing in recent months to hinder their free movement around the city.

But it is unclear whether they will be able to put up major resistance in the face of a Ukrainian attack. Ukrainian forces demonstrated their superior firepower in repelling a rebel attempt to take control of Donetsk's airport in late May, a battle that left dozens of rebel fighters dead.

Senior Ukrainian security official Mykhaylo Koval told Ukrainian television:

Rossiyskaya Gazeta: "Despite bravura reports, this 'victory' has been a Pyrrhic one for the Ukrainian army. In the wake of the massive ground and air bombardment, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and especially adjacent towns are more than half destroyed - they have been turned into ghost towns. The destroyed infrastructure will take weeks, if not months, to rebuild."

Kommersant: "A breakthrough is emerging in the confrontation in eastern Ukraine. The capture of Sloviansk, which was considered to be the symbol of resistance, has been the government forces' biggest success over two months of fighting. Though the militia has called its retreat a 'tactical manoeuvre' and Kiev has a big temptation to fight until a total victory, the two sides will have to reach an agreement, otherwise this will be a long war."

Ukrainian Defence Ministry Reports 10 Attacks Over Past 24 Hours

The Defence Ministry announcement says (translated by Interfax-Ukraine):

Illegal armed units conducted ten gunfire attacks on roadblocks and positions of the Ukrainian army in the past 24 hours. The terrorists are being successfully deterred. Last night they opened mortar and automatic fire on roadblocks near Amvrosiyivka, Dovzhansky and Rubizhne and in the area of Kreminna.

Dmytro Tymchuk of Information Resistance also reported on the attacks last night in more detail. He writes on his Facebook page (translated by The Interpreter):

- ATO checkpoints near Amvrosiyivka and Rubizhne were fired on last night with small arms. There are no casualties amongst the security forces.

- An ATO defensive position near the Dolzhansky border crossing was shelled. The shelling came from mortars. In total, the militants launched around 30 mortar shells. There were no security forces casualties.

- A bombardment was carried out against ATO positions near Kremennaya. One security officer was wounded.
