The aunt of Elliot Rodger has spoken of the family's devastation following his killing spree in Isla Vista, California, on Friday.

Rodger’s father, an assistant director on The Hunger Games, is said to be “absolutely broken” after his son carried out the massacre near UC Santa Barbara (UCSB), which left six dead and many more injured.

The sister of Peter Rodger told Sky News the family was “in total shock” - and she condemned US gun laws.

Jenni Rodger, who lives in Cazals, France, said: “I can't imagine how awful this must be for the families of those killed. My heart goes out to them.

”I don't know how on earth a sick, disturbed young man was able to get hold of a gun.

“He was always a disturbed child. I don't know how he was allowed to get a gun. Something has to be done about gun laws in America.”

She added: “Pete is absolutely broken. He is such a sensitive being. I can't see how he'll ever recover from this.”

Her comments came as reports suggested police may have missed opportunities that could have prevented Rodger’s knife and gun rampage in the student beach community.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Department officials said they had several interactions with Rodger in the lead-up to the tragedy. Sheriff Bill Brown said deputies had interacted three times with the 22-year-old, who also died in the attack, including a welfare check just weeks ago on 30 April, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Relatives had expressed concern about Rodger’s health after he posted a series of disturbing videos online - but no action was taken after officials ruled that the young man appeared to be fine and was “polite and courteous”. Mr Brown said he refused to "second guess" his officers' decision.

Police also had dealings with Rodger, who had Asperger syndrome, on two other occasions. In January, Rodger performed a citizen’s arrest on his roommate, whom he accused of stealing candles. The roommate was subsequently arrested and booked on petty theft charges,

And last summer, Rodger accused several people of assaulting him – but investigators conceded he was actually the aggressor and suspended the case.

However, in a 137-page document that has now been published, Rodger reveals that if police had searched his room during their visit, they would have found incriminating evidence indicating his deadly intentions

In it he details his fear that “someone had somehow discovered what I was planning to do” and vows to be more careful in the future.

Rodger writes: “The police would have searched my room, found all of my guns and weapons, along with my writings about what I plan to do with them. I would have been thrown in jail, denied of the chance to exact revenge on my enemies. I can’t imagine a hell darker than that. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, but it was so close.”

He continues: “It was all because of the videos. I must have expressed too much anger in them.

“I immediately took most of them off of YouTube, and planned to reupload them a few days before the Day of Retribution.”

The “Day of Retribution” is thought to refer to Friday’s rampage, during which Rodger stabbed his three flatmates to death before shooting dead two young women outside a sorority house and then killing a young man inside the local deli in the student beach community of Isla Vista.

Rodger then drove around in his black BMW, randomly shooting at pedestrians. After getting into a gun battle with deputies, he was apparently wounded but continued to drive and was later found dead from what is believed to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The three people shot were named as 22-year-old Katie Cooper, 19-year-old Veronkia Weiss and 20-year-old Christopher Michael-Martinez.

Footage emerged on Saturday that captured the shooting in the IV Deli Mart. The surveillance video obtained by CNN shows panicked customers throwing themselves to the ground as Rodger opens fire – it does not show the moment in which Mr Martinez was fatally shot.

Police found three guns in Rodger’s car that were legally bought from licensed firearms dealers and were registered in his name. They also found more than 40 unused loaded gun magazines in the vehicle, indicating the extent of his plans.

In a video uploaded to YouTube the day before the massacre, entitled “Elliot Rodger’s Retribution”, the suspect chillingly foretells the killings. He describes his plans to shoot women and promises retribution for his “loneliness and frustration” at never having had a girlfriend.

He says: “For the last eight years of my life, ever since I hit puberty, I've been forced to endure an existence of loneliness, rejection and unfulfilled desires all because girls have never been attracted to me.”

He complains that he has been at college for more than two and a half years but is still a virgin and has never kissed a girl.

Rodger says: “All you popular kids, you've never accepted me and now you'll pay for it.”

He goes on: “I'll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you. You will finally see that I am, in truth, the superior one, the true alpha male.”

And in earlier posts on his online blog Rodger, who was born in the UK and moved to the United States when he was five and was attending college in Santa Barbara, describes his sense of alienation.

In a post dated 16 April he writes: “Being lonely in a beautiful place like Santa Barbara is truly a horrible experience.

"As I've said many times, a beautiful environment can be the darkest hell if you have to experience it all alone, especially while having to watch other men walking around with their girlfriends. I wish girls were attracted to me. I don't know why they aren't."

Mr Brown said the video was ”obviously the work of a madman, adding: “It is very, very apparent that he was severely mentally disturbed”.

He continued: “We're analysing both written and videotaped evidence that suggests that this atrocity was a premeditated mass murder.”

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A man who killed six people in a California college town e-mailed his deadly plans minutes before he went on a rampage, sending his parents racing to try to stop him and leaving a family friend wondering whether her son was an intended target, according to two interviews on Sunday.

Elliot Rodger, the 22-year-old son of a Hollywood director, stabbed three people to death in his apartment before gunning down three more victims on Friday night in the town of Isla Vista near the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). He then shot himself.

In all Rodger killed two women and four men, and wounded 13 people, including eight who he shot as he sped through town in his black BMW, exchanging fire with police, authorities said.

Minutes before opening fire, the former community college student e-mailed a chilling manifesto to some 30 people including his mother, father and former teachers, said Cathleen Bloeser, 58, whose son was a childhood friend of the shooter and was included on the e-mail chain.

In that document, Rodger said he planned to first kill his housemates, then lure others to his residence to continue the violence before slaughtering women in a sorority and continuing his spree in the streets of Isla Vista.

The manifesto, which details the fear Rodger felt that his guns might have been discovered when police visited him less than a month ago, was not the first indication that something was troubling him.

"We could see that he was turning," Bloeser said, adding that Rodger talked to her 22-year-old son and another friend about sexual crimes he wanted to commit against women. "He'd changed emotionally and he'd become very despondent and he wanted to get back at people."

'MENTALLY DISTURBED'

Bloeser said Rodger asked for Bloeser's son, Philip, and their mutual childhood friend to stay with him this weekend at his apartment in Isla Vista.

"I have a feeling that they would have been right there as a part of it and shot as well," she said.

Family friend Simon Astaire told Reuters that Rodger's mother, Chin, received a phone call on the night of the shooting from his therapist alerting her to the manifesto.

Chin Rodger called police and her ex-husband, Peter Rodger, and the two parents raced to Isla Vista, he said. Chin heard radio reports about the shootings as she drove, he said. Police in Santa Barbara told them their son was believed to be the gunman.

In a YouTube video posted shortly before he went on the rampage, Rodger bitterly complained of loneliness and rejection by women and outlined his plan to kill those he believed spurned him.

'Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown has said that Rodger was seen by a variety of healthcare professionals and it was "very, very apparent he was severely mentally disturbed."

Brown said his department had been in contact with Rodger three times, including for a welfare check at the request of his family in which deputies found him to be polite and courteous. He did not appear to meet criteria to be held involuntarily on mental health grounds, and deputies took no further action.

Elliot Rodger had seen therapists off and on since he was nine years old, Astaire said. He was reserved to the point of seeming to have trouble communicating with "an underlying sadness about him, a frustration," he said.

"There was no suggestion that he had any interest, any liking for guns," Astaire said.

SHAKING AND CRYING

But Bloeser said Rodger, who was bullied as a child and was known to have Asperger's syndrome, talked to her son about wanting to hold down and rape women. Within the last year, his mental health deteriorated and he was under psychiatric care but not taking his medication, she said.

The Los Angeles Times published portions of Rodger's roughly 140-page manifesto, in which he detailed his fear that police would foil his plot when they visited him last month. He opened his door to a knock to find about seven officers looking for him.

"I had the striking and devastating fear that someone had somehow discovered what I was planning to do, and reported me for it," Rodger wrote.

"If that was the case, the police would have searched my room, found all of my guns and weapons, along with my writings about what I plan to do with them. I would have been thrown in jail, denied of the chance to exact revenge on my enemies. I can't imagine a hell darker than that."

He said the police left after he told them it was all a misunderstanding.

In the manifesto, Rodger said he did not think he was mentally prepared to kill his father, an assistant director on the 2012 film "The Hunger Games".

A lawyer for the family, Alan Shifman, said they offered sympathy to those affected by the tragedy. Authorities searched the homes of both of Rodger's parents on Sunday but neither appeared to be home at the time.

A neighbour of Elliot Rodger who asked not to be identified told reporters on Sunday that Rodger had attended parties in the courtyard of the building but would sit alone, looking sullen.

One night, the neighbour said, Rodger came home bruised and bloodied from a fight with some men at a party after he had aggressively approached a woman there.

"After the beating he was shaking, profusely crying, his eyes were like water faucets," the man said. "I've never seen anybody that mad, that upset in my life."

When police found Rodger dead in his car, apparently killed by a self-inflicted gunshot, they also discovered three legally purchased semiautomatic guns - two Sig Sauers and a Glock - and some 400 rounds of unspent ammunition, Brown said. bron

The 22-year-old, who law enforcement officials say killed six people before he died in a shoot out with deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ‘s Office, also “heard voices.”

His parents, Hollywood director Peter Rodger and his ex-wife, Li Chin, are now in hiding, staying at a hotel, as they try to come to grips with what their son is believed to have done.

“Elliot has always been troubled and couldn’t express himself,” the source tells us.

“His parents did everything they could to help him. It seemed that Elliot suffered from extreme paranoia and heard voices, but it was impossible to properly diagnose because he just wouldn’t talk. Having been prescribed psychiatric medication, Elliot refused to take it.

“Before moving from L.A. to Santa Barbara, he had been seeing a mental health professional for years, and his parents got a team of doctors for him to continue to see after his move. Their hearts break for the victims and their families.”

There was a reluctance to let Rodger move to Santa Barbara, but he was insistent, the source says.

“He thought that moving to Santa Barbara would make him happy, and his parents obliged. At first Elliot did really well academically in school at Santa Barbara City College (a community college about 30 minutes from the University of California Santa Barbara campus), but he had a hard time fitting in with the party scene. With that, Elliot became more isolated, and his grades began to suffer.”

In an incredibly chilling video he uploaded to YouTube less than 24 hours before his killing spree, Roger spoke of his frustration at being rebuffed by women. Speaking with little emotion, while seated in his car and looking straight into a camera, he said “I am the superior one” as he wondered aloud why women didn’t find him attractive.

His solution was, he said, to go on a shooting spree.

“I’m going to enter the hottest sorority house of UCSB and I will slaughter every single spoiled, stuck-up, blonde slut that I see inside there. All those girls that I’ve desired so much, they would’ve all rejected me and looked down on me as an inferior man if I ever made a sexual advance towards them.”

His lethal rampage actually began prior to the shooting, Sheriff Bill Brown revealed late on Saturday.

Rodger stabbed three males in his apartment before taking to the streets in a black BMW. There he fatally shot two female and one male UCSB students. Rodger also hit two bicyclists with his car and seriously injured others with gunfire.

His parents were concerned about Rodger’s postings on social media even prior to his YouTube “Retribution” video and had contacted law enforcement in Santa Barbara, the source tells Radar.

According to the Rodger family attorney, Alan Shifman, the family contacted local authorities to do a “welfare check” on Elliot just a few weeks ago and cops found him to be “perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human,” but seemingly without a girlfriend or friends.

Only two years earlier, Elliot was photographed in a much different setting, on the red carpet at the premiere of The Hunger Games, alongside his father who was the second unit director on the film.

However, our insider reveals, “Elliot never fit in at school in Santa Barbara, and certainly not in his dad’s Hollywood glamorous world. He was extremely smart, and loved to play video games. He wasn’t prone to violence at all. His parents have been in contact with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office and have indicated they will fully cooperate with the investigation.” bron

Attributing the deaths of six people and wounding of several others in Isla Vista to 'a madman' ignores a stark truth about our society.

We should know this by now, but it bears repeating: misogyny kills.

On Friday night, a man – identified by police as Elliot Rodgers – allegedly seeking "retribution" against women whom he said sexually rejected him went on a killing spree in Isla Vista, California, killing six people and sending seven more to the hospital with serious gunshot injuries. Three of the bodies were reportedly removed from Rodger's apartment.

Before the mass murder he allegedly committed, 22-year-old Rodger – also said to have been killed Friday night – made several YouTube videos complaining that he was a virgin and that beautiful women wouldn't pay attention to him. In one, he calmly outlined how he would "slaughter every single spoiled, stuck-up, blond slut I see".

According to his family, Rodger was seeking psychiatric treatment. But to dismiss this as a case of a lone "madman" would be a mistake.

It not only stigmatizes the mentally ill – who are much more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators of it – but glosses over the role that misogyny and gun culture play (and just how foreseeable violence like this is) in a sexist society. After all, while it is unclear what role Rodger's reportedly poor mental health played in the alleged crime, the role of misogyny is obvious.

In his final video, Rodger opined:

College is the time when everyone experiences those things such as sex and fun and pleasure, but in those years I've had to rot in loneliness, it's not fair … I don't know why you girls aren't attracted to me but I will punish you all for it.

Rodger, like most young American men, was taught that he was entitled to sex and female attention. (Only last month, a young woman was allegedly stabbed to death for rejecting a different young man's prom invitation.) He believed this so fully that he described women's apathy toward him as an "injustice" and a "crime".

You forced me to suffer all my life, now I will make you all suffer. I waited a long time for this. I'll give you exactly what you deserve, all of you. All you girls who rejected me, looked down upon me, you know, treated me like scum while you gave yourselves to other men.

Rodger was reportedly involved with the online men's rights movement: allegedly active on one forum and said to have been following several men's rights channels on YouTube. The language Rodger used in his videos against women – like referring to himself as an "alpha male" – is common rhetoric in such circles.

These communities are so virulently misogynist that the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that tracks hate groups, has been watching their movements for years.

Yet, as the artist Molly Crabapple pointed out on Twitter: "White terrorism is always blamed on guns, mental health – never poisonous ideology."

If we need to talk about this tragic shooting in terms of illness, though, let's start with talking about our cultural sickness – a sickness that refuses to see misogyny as anything other than inevitable.

It was reported on Saturday that Rodger's family had contacted the police about his violent and strange videos "weeks" before the shooting The family attorney said that police interviewed Rodger and thought he was a "perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human".

I have to wonder how much police dismissed Rodger's video rants because of the expectation that violent misogyny in young men is normal and expected.

"Dismissing violent misogynists as 'crazy' is a neat way of saying that violent misogyny is an individual problem, not a cultural one," feminist blogger Melissa McEwan tweeted.

The truth is that there is no such thing as a lone misogynist – they are created by our culture, and by communities that tells them that their hatred is both commonplace and justified.

So when we say that these things are unstoppable, what we are really saying is that we're unwilling to do the work to stop them. Violence against women does not have to be inevitable, but it is almost always foreseeable: what matters is what we do about it. the guardian
