KRASNAYA POLYANA, February 19 (R-Sport) – A knee injury has forced defending Olympic skicross champion Michael Schmid to pull out of the Sochi Winter Games, he said Wednesday.

The Swiss skier won the sport’s inaugural Olympic gold medal at Vancouver 2010, but has struggled in training in Sochi after hurting his knee last week.

"This morning I was still full of confidence. But I have already noticed, even without jumping, that the knee is too unstable to start,” he said in a statement released by the Swiss Olympic committee.

"The risk is simply too great. I have been looking forward to the race here, and now I am tremendously disappointed that I won't be in it."

Schmid, 29, has struggled with repeated knee injuries since his 2010 Olympic win.
