It is with regret that World Snooker announces that world number 13 Ali Carter has been diagnosed with a form of lung cancer‎.

Over the next few months Carter will be facing an intensive course of chemotherapy. The 34-year-old from Chelmsford battled testicular cancer last year.

Carter, a winner of three ranking titles and twice runner-up at the World Championship, was due to play in the Wuxi Classic qualifiers in Gloucester this morning but has withdrawn from the event.

WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson said: "Ali is the toughest competitor I know and having spoken to him over the last few days I can assure everyone he has the fight to get through the battle ahead. I know that the world will be looking forward to Ali returning to action and I am sure that all of our friends, fans and partners will join with me in wishing Ali a full recovery."

Stephen Lee guilty of snooker cue fraud sale to Facebook fan

The former world number five snooker player Stephen Lee has been fined for selling his personal cue to a Facebook fan for £1,600 but failing to send it.

The victim, based in Hong Kong, paid the money into Lee's wife's bank account after Lee agreed to arrange for modifications to be made to the cue.

The money was transferred but the player, 39, continued using the cue.

Lee pleaded guilty to fraud at Swindon Magistrates' Court and was fined £110 and ordered to repay the £1,600.

Ronnie O'Sullivan loses to Mark Williams in China

Five-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan was beaten 6-5 by Mark Williams in the quarter-finals of the International Championship in China. Despite losing the first three frames, the Welshman claimed his first ranking event win over O'Sullivan since 2002.

Northern Irishman Mark Allen beat Wales' Michael White 6-3 to book his place in the semi-finals.
England's Robert Milkins saw off Marco Fu 6-5 and compatriot Ricky Walden was a 6-1 winner over Scot Jamie Burnett. Englishman O'Sullivan, 38, who compiled three century breaks in his 6-1 second-round victory over Anthony McGill, managed a best of 72 against Williams.

O'Sullivan started strongly before the Welshman, 39, opened up a 5-3 lead, only to allow O'Sullivan to level at 5-5. O'Sullivan potted only two reds in the deciding frame as Williams, world champion in 2000 and 2003, made breaks of 50 and 22 to maintain his hopes of a first ranking title since the 2011 German Masters.
