Residents and Holidaymakers to Tenerife are urged to take care amid fears of a volcano eruption following a swarm of around 20 earthquakes over the course of the last 4 days.

The increased level seismic activity around Mount Teide - Spain's highest mountain - has raised fears among experts that it may be about to erupt.

According to the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan), more than 20 quakes struck the popular British holiday destination between October 28 and October 31.
Fortunately, they weren’t that big, with the largest measuring 1.4 on the Richter scale, and they hit 6-8km below sea level too around Vilaflor in southern Tenerife.

The last time Mount Teide erupted was in 1909, more than 100 years ago.

Experts from the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands quickly sought to reassure residents by Facebook.

They said the small swarm was similar to other seismic swarms recorded in Tenerife and said the characteristics of the seismic events reflected a relationship with the hydrothermal system, which has undergone a pressurisation process.

They added: ‘It is important to emphasise, it does not represent any kind of concern for the population.’

The area is no stranger to Volcanic activity, with the Island of El Hierro experiencing a swarm of almost 2,000 seismic activities between 2011 and 2012.

Geologists have also previously expressed concerns that further activity may cause a chain reaction of events that 'could' trigger a Tsunami emanating from the neighbouring Island of La Palma.

Back in 2000 the BBC documentary series, Horizon, predicted what would happen if Volcanic or Seismic eruptions caused a landslide on the Island. In the event of this happening a mass upwards of 4'000'000 cubic meters could crash into the Atlantic and cause a Tsunami that would be as high as 300 ft, and could cross the ocean in just 6 hours.

TENERIFE – Het Spaanse Geografische Instituut heeft sinds 28 april meer dan 50 events geregistreerd waarbij er aardbevingen hebben plaatsgevonden tussen de 1,6 en 3,2 op de schaal van Richter. Deze bevingen werden geregistreerd rondom de vulkaan Enmedio die gelegen is tussen de eilanden Tenerife en Gran Canaria. Sommige van deze kleine bevingen werden gevoeld op de eilanden maar de meeste van hen gingen ongemerkt voorbij.

Het is niets nieuws dat er aardbevingen worden waargenomen door het Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) rondom en op de Canarische Eilanden, het zijn immers eilanden met een vulkanische oorsprong waarbij de bodem nooit stil is. De meeste bevingen worden door de bevolking niet waargenomen en gaan ongemerkt voorbij maar soms vinden er in een kort tijdsbestek tientallen kleinere bevingen plaats waarna de geologen alerter zijn dan normaal.

Tussen 28 april en 1 mei hebben er meer dan 50 kleinere bevingen plaatsgevonden tussen Tenerife en Gran Canaria, onder het zeeoppervlak en op dieptes variërend van 6 tot 52 kilometer. De lichtste aardbeving had slechts een kracht van 1,6 op de schaal van Richter maar de zwaarste beving had een kracht van 3,2 op de schaal van Richter (deze werd gemeten op 29 april om 1.44 uur op een diepte van slechts 8 kilometer.

Volgens experts is er niets aan de hand en hoeft niemand zich zorgen te maken aangezien dit volgens hen wel vaker gebeurd. Meestal worden kleinere bevingen met krachten minder dan 2,2 op de schaal van Richter niet gemeld in de Spaanse pers maar als het er 50 achter elkaar zijn is dat voor sommige kranten noemenswaardig.

De Enmedio vulkaan (Volcán de Enmedio) is een onderzeese vulkaan gelegen op 24,5 kilometer van Tenerife en 36,2 kilometer van Gran Canaria. De basis van deze vulkaan is enorm groot en men vergelijkt deze met maar liefst 539 voetbalvelden, De vulkaan heeft een hoogte van ongeveer 1.630 meter. De laatste keer dat de Enmedio vulkaan voor enige problemen zorgde was in mei 1989 toen een aardbeving met een kracht van 5 op de schaal van Richter gevoeld werd op de eilanden Tenerife en Gran Canaria (zonder schade en gewonden).

The Mount Teide volcano on Tenerife sits nearby. The National Park draws three million visitors yearly and the volcano's 3,718-metre (12,198 ft) summit is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic. The last eruption was on November 18, 1909.

The government has been urged to step in amid calls for an urgent meeting to discuss why the quakes are happening again.

But Emilio Carreño from Spain’s National Geographic Institute, said the majority of earthquakes registered in the past few days have been of tectonic origin, and ‘are not usually associated with volcanology.’

Carreño pointed out that all earthquakes are reviewed, especially those in the Canary Islands, because “the situation of the islands makes precision in locating the source more difficult.”

He added: “Right now in the peninsula there are quite a few places where these series of quakes are being recorded.

“It is common during any single month to register between 100 and 600 earthquakes in areas like Jodar or in Jaen, which can experience between 400 and 500.”

IGN observes surface deformation

Surface deformation is also observed, both in the island's network of GNSS stations and in the inclinometer.

The latter, located east of Cumbre Vieja, registers a positive signal to the east of 3 microradians, and the GNSS network has registered an accumulated deformation of 1.5 centimeters since the beginning of the seismic series.

The geometric pattern of the deformation obtained is compatible with a pressure center located in the area where the seismicity is being located.

Shallow depths suggest that new magma is currently intruding into a reservoir under the volcano, volcanologist Dr. Tom Pfeiffer said.2

Earthquakes registered in the previous two earthquake swarms under the volcano -- December 20203 and February 20214, were deeper (20 - 30 km / 12 - 18 miles, and 15 - 20 km / 9 - 12 miles, respectively), which could indicate that magma has now risen higher in the volcano's underground storage systems.

"Without a doubt, the current seismic swarm represents a significant change in the activity of the volcano and is related to a process of magmatic intrusion beneath La Palma Island," the Volcanology Institute of the Canaries (INVOLCAN) said.5

"Our geochemical monitoring program for volcanic surveillance in La Palma has allowed us to detect in 2020 (16/09/2020), the highest emission value of helium-3 observed in La Palma over the past 30 years, and after this detection, not only the largest number of seismic swarms in La Palma since 2017 (7 of a total 10) but also a year before recording the most important seismic swarming of the 10 occurred in La Palma."

The Ministry of Public Administrations, Justice and Security, the Government of the Canary Islands convened the Scientific Committee of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Attention to Emergencies due to Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA) to assess the situation, and agreed to activate this Plan in a situation of Alert for Fuencaliente, Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and Mazo and the change of the traffic light from Green to Yellow for said municipalities.6
