Die kans is idd sterk aanwezig, maar Sauber had nog geen andere coureur geregeld dus ze hadden al een vrije dag over. Frijns komt in ieder geval nog in actie.

Motor racing's governing body has agreed to a change of the testing regulations that will allow teams to use their regular drivers to help out with tyre work at the Silverstone test from July 17-19.

The move comes on the back of the multiple Pirelli tyre failures at the British Grand Prix, and should help Pirelli find a solution that will eradicate the problems it has suffered so far this year.

But with the FIA making it clear that the experienced drivers are only allowed to work on the emergency tyre programme, it plans to send its own officials to the test.

These observers will check the running programmes of every team to ensure any car development work is only done by the 'young' drivers who will still be present at the test.

Pirelli has still yet to announce the result of its investigation of what went wrong at Silverstone to cause the series of failures.

The company is expected to announce later on Tuesday that it will bring the Kevlar-belted tyres that were trialled at the Canadian Grand Prix to Germany this weekend.

A bigger change of specification will then come in time for the Hungarian GP, with teams able to test these tyres at Silverstone.

Pirelli also has two further private tests planned in the next few weeks, with the FIA having told its motorsport director Paul Hembery at Silverstone that it would be willing to allow the tyre company to use a 2013 car if it is required.

Robin Frijns is blij met het nieuws dat hij op de eerste twee dagen van de Formule 1-test op Silverstone mag instappen bij Sauber.
Formule 1.nl vernam een paar dagen geleden in Silverstone al van Sauber-teambaas Monisha Kaltenborn dat Frijns in actie zal komen, maar die plannen leken even op de helling te komen door de problemen bij bandenfabrikant Pirelli. De voorgenomen Young Driver Test is namelijk niet meer alleen voorbehouden aan testrijders, maar mag op verzoek van de teams en Pirelli ook worden benut om de reguliere coureurs te laten testen met de nieuwe banden die Pirelli voortaan gaat gebruiken om herhaling van het bandenfiasco te voorkomen.

De deelname van Frijns is echter niet in het geding gekomen, zo blijkt. De Limburgse coureur, wiens GP2-optreden in Silverstone door een probleem met de wielophanging in het water viel, staat nog gewoon op het programma. Op zeventien en achttien juli stapt Frijns in bij Sauber, dat daarmee zijn vertrouwen in de nieuwkomer uitspreekt.

De eerste twee dagen van de Young Driver Test mag ik voor mijn rekening nemen, bevestigt Frijns. Silverstone is een pittig baantje maar ik ben ontzettend blij dat ik de kans krijg om kilometers te maken in de 2013-auto. Er moeten diverse nieuwe onderdelen getest worden dus ik moet flink aan de bak. Het is mijn taak om Sauber sneller te maken dus ik ga mijn uiterste best doen: hard werken voor het team maar ondertussen ook genieten. Ik wil Sauber bedanken voor deze kans.

But Manuel Franco, the correspondent for the Spanish sports daily AS, reported from the Nurburgring that Allison, 45, is definitely heading to Italy.

"AS is certain that Allison has signed for Ferrari," Franco wrote on Thursday.

"McLaren wanted him to replace Paddy Lowe, but he (Allison) preferred to go to Ferrari."

Franco said Allison is currently serving his six months of obligatory 'gardening leave'.

The FIA confirmed to the F1 teams today that the Silverstone Young Driver test will still take place over three days – ending any hopes Mercedes might have had that it would be allowed to participate in an extra fourth day.

Crucially the FIA has also decided to ensure that race drivers can only be involved in Pirelli testing, having contemplated allowing teams to do what they want in terms of car development.

FIA observers will ensure that any changes made to the cars when a race driver is running relate only to the tyre testing, so teams will not be able to swap wings and other parts around and so on.

However a race driver could in theory test new parts if they are on the car in the morning, and remain in place all day.

The FIA today sent the following note to teams, which has also been seen by this writer:

1) The young driver training test will remain a three day test from 17-19 July.

2) One specification of tyre will be available for the test. The 2012 construction will be used but with the hard, medium and soft 2013 compounds.

3) Pirelli will be authorised to provide each team with five extra sets of tyres for this test, bringing the annual total to 105 sets. All of these sets may be used.

4) Any driver who has competed in more than two F1 World Championship races may take part in this test, provided that the purpose of him doing so is to test tyres for the appointed tyre supplier. In order to meet this requirement, all teams shall, in particular, ensure that any changes made to a car at these times are exclusively related to the tyre tests set out in the run plan provided by Pirelli. An FIA observer will be appointed to ensure the regulations are being followed.

Het lijkt net alsof er staat dat er 8 versnellingen komen met 1 ratio, maar ze zullen idd wel bedoelen 7 versnellingen met 8 opties. Grote vraag waarom dat zo nodig moet..
