Wanneer volgt Sanchez?quote:NBA center Jason Collins on Monday announced that he's gay in a story for Sports Illustrated, becoming the first active player in a major American team sport to announce that he is gay.
Not only will the Cardinals protect themselves by drug testing Mathieu randomly, possibly on a weekly basis, but they will construct the third-round pick's contract with no guaranteed money, according to King. Mathieu's contract will allow for roster bonuses in a move designed to protect the team if his troubles continue and they cut him.
quote:Mathieu's agent fully expects to get the guaranteed money afforded to a player of his draft slot. (Last year's 69th overall pick received a signing bonus of $691,000.) Lawlor phoned the Cardinals on Monday to speak on the issue.
quote:Geno Smith's draft fall to the New York Jets has claimed a victim other than Tim Tebow: Smith's agency.
Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal reports that Smith fired Select Sports, the agency representing him throughout the draft process. By league rule, he can't hire another agent for another five days.
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News writes that Smith believed he "would be and should be" the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. When he didn't make the first round, the agents paid the price.
This will open up to Smith to easy criticism: It's not like the agents are at fault for his draft day fall, and it looks like he's taking it out on them. But that's overly simplistic and sympathetic to the agents.
Sports agents often make big promises they can't keep. We don't know what transpired between Smith and his agents, but he's well within his rights to fire them if they didn't deliver.

Blackmon will be eligible to return to the Jaguars' active roster on Monday, Sept. 30, according to the NFL.

Tavon Austin, wonderlic score 7....

quote:Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports via sources that Smith acted aloof, disengaged and displayed a general bad attitude during pre-draft meetings. Sources were critical of Smith spending much of his visits on the phone, reading Twitter and texting friends.
From Yahoo! Sports:
“All these other players who were in there were talking to the coaches, trying to get to know people and he was over there by himself,” one source said. “That’s not what you want out of your quarterback.”
“He doesn’t have much presence, not much of a leader,” one executive who studied Smith said. “I don’t think he’s a bad person, but that’s not enough to be a quarterback in this league.”
Cole’s report also includes reports of Smith, two days before the draft, toasting and thanking his agents, calling them “family” and saying they would represent him his entire career.
“His biggest problem is that he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know,” said a league executive, who spent extensive time assessing Smith before the draft. “I’m not sure he knows how to take instruction because he pretty much wouldn’t listen or talk to our coaches … he’s talented. He can sling it, he can fit it into tight spots, he can do a lot of things and I think he wants to be good. But you can’t tell him anything right now. He’s tuned out because he thinks he’s got it all down.”

quote:Scoring too high can be as much of a problem as scoring too low. Football coaches want to command the locker room. Being smarter than the individual players makes that easier. Having a guy in the locker room who may be smarter than every member of the coaching staff can be viewed as a problem or at a minimum as a threat to the egos of the men who hope to be able when necessary to outsmart the players, especially when trying in some way to manipulate them.
