De FBI heeft de leiding over het onderzoek naar de bomexplosies. De Amerikaanse autoriteiten gaan uit van een terroristische aanslag, maar tasten vooralsnog in het duister over het motief of de identiteit van de daders.

Congresleden zeiden dat men zelfs geen idee heeft of het om binnenlandse dan wel buitenlandse daders gaat. De verantwoordelijkheid voor het geweld is niet opgeëist.

WBZ-TV meldde dat de FBI een appartement in Revere, een voorstad van Boston, is binnengevallen. De politie van Massachusetts bevestigde later dat er een arrestatiebevel is uitgevaardigd in verband met het onderzoek naar de explosies, maar wilde geen verdere details prijsgeven.

Het hoofd van de politie van Boston, Edward Davis, zei dat de autoriteiten geen specifieke informatie hadden binnengekregen dat er iets stond te gebeuren tijdens de marathon.

Bij de finish van de marathon van Boston hebben zich twee krachtige explosies voorgedaan. De politie van Boston spreekt van 2 doden en 23 gewonden.

Op beelden van een van de explosies is te zien hoe een van de deelnemers neervalt. De explosie vindt plaats achter een rij dranghekken. Sommige lopers rennen in paniek weg. Mensen in gele hesjes trekken de hekken weg om slachtoffers achter de hekken te bereiken.

Achter de hekken zijn gewonden te zien aan wie hulp wordt verleend. Toeschouwers op een tribune tegenover de plaats van een explosie proberen snel weg te komen. Op foto's van een verlaten straat is veel bloed te zien.
Pakketje

Het Lenox Hotel is ontruimd. Mogelijk had dit te maken met de vondst van een verdacht pakketje. De politie heeft zelf een derde explosie veroorzaakt, mogelijk om te voorkomen dat het pakketje zou afgaan.

Op de eerste tv-beelden zijn veel ambulances en brandweerwagens te zien. De reddingswerkzaamheden maken een goed georganiseerde indruk, van paniek is geen sprake. Er ligt veel rommel op de grond. Wat het is, is niet te zien.
Patriot's Day

De staat Massachussets waarin Boston ligt viert vandaag Patriot's Day, de dag waarop de eerste veldslagen van de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog worden herdacht.

De koplopers waren al twee uur binnen toen de explosie zich voordeed. Enkele seconden later volgde een tweede, zeggen getuigen. Volgens de politie waren op dat moment nog veel deelnemers op weg naar de finish op Boylston Street. Aan de marathon deden zo'n 27.000 mensen mee.


De politie van Boston gaat er nu vanuit dat de explosies bij de Boston Marathon zijn veroorzaakt door bommen. Amerikaanse inlichtingendiensten doen dat ook, zegt persbureau Reuters.

Een bron bij een inlichtingendiensten heeft tegen persbureau AP gezegd dat er nog twee bommen zijn gevonden, die niet zijn afgegaan. Ze zijn inmiddels onschadelijk gemaakt. Volgens de Boston Globe lag één van de niet-ontplofte bommen op een glazen voetbrug.

De organisatie van de marathon laat op Facebook en Twitter weten dat de explosies bij de finishline zijn veroorzaakt door bommen.

We still do not know who did this or why. And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. But make no mistake -- we will get to the bottom of this. And we will find out who did this; we'll find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.

Today is a holiday in Massachusetts -- Patriots’ Day. It’s a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the earliest days of our nation. And it’s a day that draws the world to Boston’s streets in a spirit of friendly competition. Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people. I'm supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city. And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way.

You should anticipate that as we get more information, our teams will provide you briefings. We're still in the investigation stage at this point. But I just want to reiterate we will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable.
