The pickup takes the animated series through season 28.

TV's longest-running primetime scripted series just got longer.

Fox has handed out a two-season renewal for animated hit The Simpsons, the network announced Monday. The renewal means the series from Al Jean and Matt Groening will extend through season 28.

This marks the latest multi-season renewal for TV's longest-running hit. Following prolonged negotiations with its voice cast, the network reached new deals and picked up the show for two additional seasons in 2011.

With the additional season order, the animated family comedy following the misadventures of Homer, Bart and company will reach a staggering 625 total issues.

The early pickup also means there will be no interruption in the show's production process.

Currently in its 26th season, The Simpsons is averaging 6.2 million total viewers per episode and a 2.9 among adults 18-49.

The Simpsons joins a roster of returning scripted programming that includes fellow animated entry Bob's Burgers and Family Guy, as well as comedies Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Last Man on Earth, New Girl and dramas Sleepy Hollow, Empire and Gotham. Additional series pickups, renewals and cancelations are expected to come this week ahead of Fox's upfront presentation next week.

Dat bevestigt Shearer zelf op Twitter.

"De serie zal verder gaan, Harry maakt daar geen deel van uit. Wij wensen hem het beste", kreeg Shearer te horen van een producent van de serie.

Als reden geeft de stemacteur op dat het ligt aan zijn wens om de vrijheid te krijgen voor ander werk. "Bedankt, Simpsons-fans, voor jullie steun."

De stemacteur maakt sinds het begin van de serie in 1989 deel uit van de cast. Shearer spreekt onder andere de stemmen in van Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Waylon Smithers en schoolhoofd Skinner.

Onlangs werd de The Simpsons zelf wel verlengd voor twee extra seizoenen. De contracten van andere stemacteurs zijn ook verlengd.

Ik ga Harry Shearer wel missen zeg. Moet je eens nagaan welke stemmen hij allemaal deed.
Het zou raar zijn als ze nieuwe stemacteurs de stemmen laten nadoen en alle characters ineens uit de serie schrijven gaat 'm ook niet worden.
Dus dat zullen wel allemaal nieuwe stemmen worden...en dat gaat raar worden ...

Simpsons fans will find this turn of events nothing short of excellent: Seven weeks after tweeting that he was exiting the animated comedy, EW has learned Harry Shearer—the voice of Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Smithers and a flurry of other memorable characters—has agreed to rejoin Fox’s forever-running animated comedy.

We repeat: Burns is back.

Shearer has signed the same contract as did the other five primary voice actors—Dan Castellaneta, Yeardley Smith, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, and Hank Azaria—keeping the show’s original cast fully intact, EW has learned. These deals, which run for four seasons (including a network option for seasons 29 and 30), are estimated at more than $300,000 per episode. Fox recently renewed The Simpsons for a 27th and 28th season, which will bring its episode tally to 625.

Back in May, Shearer, who had battled with the studio/network previously over compensation, indicated that his departure was not tied to a money issue, but rather the flexibility in his schedule. The actor—who hosts the radio program Le Show and stars in the web series Nixon’s The One—tweeted, “I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work.” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told EW the following day that he found that tweet confusing, saying, “Everybody on the show does lots of outside projects. He actually gets to record on the phone and do the [table] reads on the phone. So we’ve never kept him from doing that stuff.” In that interview, Jean also said that the producers were “still hoping he might come back. Nothing’s done ‘til it’s done.” And executive producer James L. Brooks took to Twitter to reach out to Shearer: “Hey, we tried. We’re still trying. Harry, let’s talk.” On May 15, Shearer already appeared to be warming to the prospect of reconciliation, telling CNNMoney, “Stay tuned,” when asked about the possibility of a return. Two weeks later, during a Twitter exchange with a Simpsons fan, he replied: “Discussions are happening at a level where decisions can be made.”

In order for the Simpsons producers to remain on schedule, they commenced production on season 27 without him. (In any case, they already had seven holdover episodes from last season in the can, and those include Shearer’s voices.) Jean told EW last month that if Shearer did not change his mind and return, his impressive roster of characters—which also include Seymour Skinner, Lenny, Dr. Hibbert, Kent Brockman, Reverend Lovejoy and Otto—would not be retired; new cast members would be hired to continue voicing those roles. Shearer’s deal was completed in enough time to avoid that scenario, and his temporary absence behind the scenes will not be significantly felt on the new season.

The season 27 premiere of The Simpsons will air, appropriately enough, on Sept. 27.

Homer Simpson's beer of choice, 'Duff', is arguably as iconic as the show itself.

On the show, his love for the fictional brew is well documented - “Ah, good ol’ trustworthy beer. My love for you will never die" - and it it seems that fans of the show are equally enamoured with the beverage.

To meet public demand, 21st Century Fox, owner of the show, has announced it will be selling an official Duff Beer in Chile, with plans to bring the beer to Europe.
Previously, Simpsons creator Matt Groening has stated that he did not wish to license the Duff trademark to make an actual beer as he was concerned it would encourage children to drink.

However, over the years, many unofficial versions of Duff have cropped up over the web, particularly in Australia and Southern America.
So much unauthorised Duff was being sold in Chile, Fox had to file an intellectual property complaint that led to thousands of bottles being seized by the Chilean police.

Jeffrey Godsick, president of the consumer products division at 21st Century Fox, told the Wall Street Journal: “Once you see enough piracy, you are faced with two choices. One is deciding to fight it, and the other is deciding to go out with it.”

Godsick described the new, official Duff as being a premium lager with "a very good balance of flavour and refreshment to it. It's fairly deep golden in colour. It's got a hint of fruit to it. It's got a caramel aromatic to it."

Ariel Casarin, an associate professor at the Universidad Adolfo Ibanez in Chile told the WSJ that Fox had essentially been forced into making the beer as intellectual property laws don't protect fictional products, "because the product did not in fact exist, the argument goes that Fox cannot claim trademark on it."

Don't expect however to see Homer or the beer's in-show mascot, Duffman, featured in any advertising for the drink. Godsick added: “Duff is inspired by the brand that’s in the show, but it begins and ends at that. It’s a completely stand-alone brand, you will not see any characters from the show involved in the marketing in any way.”

Though the beer will initially only be available in Chile, Godsick revealed that there are plans to bring it to Europe early next year, and possibly more countries after that. “I think there’s potential to have Duff everywhere in the world," he said.

To quote the official Duff slogan, Simpsons' fans just "can't get enough of that wonderful Duff."
