Niet helemaal met je eens je kunt in sommige gevallen echt wel zien dat er iets speelt. Alleen dat word vaak afgedaan met termen ''dat doet ie toch niet'' en warempel gebeurt het toch. Call of Duty: played harmlessly by millions
It took longer than I expected. Four whole days after the Newtown shootings The Sun has run with a front-page story on the killer's "Call of Duty obsession", calling the incredibly popular series "controversial". In reality, beyond the anti-gaming rhetoric of many editorials, it's far from controversial. The latest instalment, Call of Duty Black Ops 2, sold 11 million copies in its first week, and many more are sitting wrapped up beneath Christmas trees across the country. January will not see an epidemic of spree killings sparked by festive hours spent in front of the Xbox.
That Adam Lanza played Call of Duty is one of the least unusual aspects of his profile. Playing the game was something he had in common with millions of perfectly well-adjusted young men and women. The fact that his mother took him to gun ranges and kept high-powered weapons in her home despite his mental health issues should be considered long before his gaming habits. An obsession with the Call of Duty – if indeed he had one: the source for the story is the family's plumber – was a reflection of his damaged state rather than the cause of it.
Games are an easy scapegoat and means of explaining the motivation behind mass shootings. After Columbine, much was made of the shooters playing the now quaint-looking first-person shooter DooM. More recently, when Anders Breivik committed mass murder in Norway, his taste for Call of Duty and World of Warcraft was held up as proof that gaming was a factor in his evil acts. Believing that individuals who kill are gripped by fantasies fed to them through computer games makes the situation more understandable and provides something simple to decry. Why try to unpick a complex mess of factors when you can pin the blame on violent games?
If you went picking through Lanza's choice in books and films, there are bound to be other scapegoats – but, despite huge sales and mainstream acceptance, it's still easier to present games as the province of the isolated and weird.
Virtual guns don't kill people, real ones do. It's a simplistic conclusion but it's the right one. Focusing on video games in the wake of violent events is a distraction and one that we seem doomed to repeat. To assume that if someone plays a game too many times that they will go out and commit atrocious acts in the real world is to fundamentally misunderstand the human mind. We call it "playing" for a reason

En ondertussen is er een run op aanvalswapens omdat de Amerikanen bang zijn dat ze verboden gaan worden.
Victoria Jackson van de Thea Party moet haar anti abortus standpunt ook weer even benadrukken.

het is te laat voor de VS - gun control gaat niet veel meer uithalen
Australia had dat in '96 (12 dagen na Port Arthur) wél kunnen doen omdat de situatie (nog) niet uit de hand was gelopen
maar ja als ik in de VS woonde had ik waarschijnlijk ook wel een vuurwapen - vooral als ik in een ghetto woonde met bendes en shit - wat doe je ertegen- de overheid doet er niets aan
ze hebben die situatie zelf gecreëerd
