Bauke Mollema wil zich komend voorjaar focussen op de Tirreno-Adriatico en de klimklassiekers. Later in het seizoen is de Tour de France een absoluut hoofddoel. Zo meldt de Nederlander in het Dagblad van het Noorden. Mollema verkiest in tegenstelling tot vorig jaar de Tirreno boven Parijs-Nice. "De korte klimmetjes in Italië liggen me beter."

Vorig jaar had de 26-jarige renner al de Italiaanse rittenkoers willen rijden, maar moest hij vanwege ploegbelangen (Gesink en Kruijswijk reden al de Tirreno-Adriatico) aan de start van Parijs-Nice verschijnen. "Maar toen ik in 2010 de Ronde van Italië reed, merkte ik dat de steile Italiaanse aankomsten mij beter liggen. Dat bleek ook in de klassiekers. Dat ziet de ploeg nu ook wel in." Na de Tirreno-Adriatico staan de klimklassiekers op het programma van Mollema. In de Amstel Gold Race, Waalse Pijl en Luik-Bastenaken-Luik reed hij dit jaar driemaal een toptienklassering.

Tour de France
De Tour de France is voor Mollema ook komend seizoen een hoofddoel. De vraag is alleen met wie Mollema het kopmanschap gaat delen in Frankrijk. De kans is aanwezig dat Robert Gesink als klassementsrenner in de Ronde van Italië aan de start staat. "Twee keer voor het klassement gaan in een grote ronde is lastig. Het is dus de vraag of Robert in de Tour nóg een keer drie weken de concentratie kan houden. Maar het is natuurlijk prima dat hij als kopman vertrekt. Twee kopmannen is prima. Met twee ijzers in het vuur sta je sterker."

Als Gesink niet de Giro rijdt, dan is de kans groot dat de voormalige Rabobankploeg met Steven Kruijswijk in Italië als kopman aan het vertrek staat. "De ploeg ziet ook wel in dat je daar nu niet meer zonder kopman kan starten. Robert of Steven zal dus de Giro rijden. Mij is het ook niet gevraagd door de ploegleiding en die weet dat ik in de klassiekers wil scoren."

Voorjaarsprogramma
Voordat Mollema aan de start van de Tirreno-Adriatico (6-12 maart), zal hij de Challenge Mallorca (3 februari), de Ronde van de Middellandse Zee (6-10 februari) en de Ruta del Sol (17-21 februari) rijden.

World Series-Cycling met 19 wedstrijden en 26 miljoen euro prijzengeld

De World Series Cycling van de Tsjechische zakenman Zdenek Bakala moeten de Champions League van het wielrennen worden. Het basisproject bevat 19 wedstrijden en een prijzenpot van 26 miljoen euro.

Bakala en zijn rechterhand Bessel Kok (bekend van Omega Pharma-Quick Step en Belgacom) namen voor hun project de Londense firma Sporters Promoter Gifted onder de arm. Bij die firma kwamen ze terecht bij Jonathan Price en Thomas Kurth. Price is een specialist in het bundelen van tv-rechten. Thomas Kurth was in een vorig leven de general manager van de G14 van de rijkste Europese voetbalclubs. Hun nieuw concept, waarvan zowel de teams, de renners, de organisatoren en de UCI beter van worden, willen ze ten vroegste volgend seizoen (gedeeltelijk) te concretiseren. De grote lijnen liggen al vast.

WEDSTRIJDEN

De World Series Cycling bestaan uit 19 wedstrijden en 88 wedstrijddagen. Het hart wordt gevormd door de drie grote ronden (Tour, Giro, Vuelta) en de zes klassiekers (Milaan-Sanremo, Ronde van Vlaanderen, Parijs-Roubaix, Amstel Gold Race, Luik-Bastenaken-Luik en de Ronde van Lombardije. Daarnaast komen tien wedstrijden van vier dagen die telkens van donderdag tot zondag worden gehouden.

‘Het moet allemaal veel simpeler, herkenbaarder en flitsender', aldus Price. ‘Een vierdaagse met een sprintetappe, een golvende rit, een tijdrit en een bergetappe. Of een ploegentijdrit. Dat kunnen bestaande of nieuwe wedstrijden zijn. Het seizoen moet over de continenten heen met de zon mee evolueren: beginnen Down Under en eindigen in Azië.

TEAMS

Het streefdoel is 14 ploegen (280 renners). Omega Pharma-Quick Step, Cannondale (opvolger Liquigas), Movistar, RadioShack-Nissan-Trek, Team Saxo-Tinkoff , de opvolger van Rabobank, Garmin-Sharp en Vacansoleil-DCM stapten al in het project. ‘De rest zal wel volgen. Misschien delen we ook enkele wildcards uit', aldus Price. ‘We willen de beste renners in de beste koersen. De mensen willen Boonen tegen Gilbert zien, Cavendish tegen Greipel, Contador tegen Andy Schleck of Wiggins. Op het einde van het seizoen willen we zoals in de Formule 1 een Individual Champion en een Team Champion kronen. Om de Word Series Cycling te starten denken we aan een prijzenpot van 26 miljoen euro.' ANTIDOPING ‘Alles gebeurt onder de WADA-code. Er worden onafhankelijk van de UCI antidopingcontroles gehouden. Bij een overtreding volgt ook een contractsanctie. We trekken zo'n 4 miljoen euro uit voor

‘We moeten meer Coca Cola's en Red Bulls in deze sport krijgen. We hebben al een geïnteresseerde tv-zender en een global sponsor', aldus Price en Kurth, die aan een gelijkaardig project voor het vrouwenwielrennen werken.

At present moment Katusha Team has no information regarding the reasons for the decision of the UCI to reject the request from the team for registration in first division. Team management, riders and staff are extremely surprised by the lack of justification for such a decision made by the UCI. Thus earlier the team, which possesses rider №1 in the world and has finished the season in second place in the UCI World Tour ranking, was informed that it satisfies all possible criteria required for participation in the first division. In fact the only Russian team, where the majority of riders are Russian citizens, has been excluded from participation in races of the World Tour. Thus, this decision of the UCI has suspended Russiaas a country from participation in cycling competitions of the highest level.
The management of Katusha Team, its riders and staff are surprised by such a quick change of decision, lack of coordination inside the UCI press-service and a complete absence of reasons for such a fast decision.

The UCI which has been established in order to protect the interests of the riders worldwide, on the contrary by its actions completely violates the canons of sports ethics and causes irreparable moral and psychological harm to the athletes before the start of the new season, and the delay in explaining the reasons of the decisions only shows the lack of the significance of these reasons.

In the nearest future the management of the Russian team Katusha intends to investigate thoroughly this incident, first of all in order to give all possible explanations to the riders and staff of the team, as well as to choose a future strategy.

In addition, the Katusha Team is not retreating from the plans that have been made for the next season and is preparing for the official team presentation, which is scheduled for mid-December 2012 inItaly.

The Russian team intends to defend its interests with the help of all possible civilized instruments and methods, including going to court.

Katusha is ready to fight and is stronger than ever.
