Ajax director celebrates his Danes
Sporten.dk have spoken with Ajax's sports director Marc Overmars on the club Danes, and why Danish players are so important for Ajax
About why they get so many Danes to the club, says Overmars:
- We are very aware of where we scout our players. We are for example not present in countries such as Brazil, Uruguay, Peru or Chile. We focus more on Sweden, Denmark and similar areas. Denmark has always produced good players, similar to the Dutch players, such as Frank Arnesen, Laudrup brothers and Eriksen, etc. The players who like the ball and technique as their primary ability, says Marc Overmars and continues:
- English players rarely take abroad, and one sees not a Spanish or Italian player in Dutch football, it happens rarely. Dutchmen have always been very curious to get out in the world, as the Danes. Danes fall quickly, they fit everywhere, and many players are also in the Netherlands after his career, for example Tomasson and Rommedahl, who will stay here after his career. The same with Kenneth Perez, who works here at the club and almost speak better Dutch than I do.
Below is Marc Overmars' individual assessment of the club Danes:
Christian Eriksen - Goals come Eriksen
- Eriksen takes all the time more and more people step up to higher levels. The most important thing right now is the way he handles everything that is going on: He handles pressure really mature, and he started to talk about it with us. He is calm about everything bustle, and he is critical about his own game.
- When you are 20, there are always things you can improve. There are many who have criticized his inability to score, but if you're 20 years old, is the goal not essential. He had 16 assists last season. Here in Holland we call assists for six goals, and it will mean that he actually has eight goals extra. When I was 20, I scored four goals in a season, but in the years after I scored 14 goals. So it's a matter of time before also targets come, because he creates a lot of chances, and when he has the ability, he also has the ability to score.
Christian Poulsen - The father of the young
- It is perhaps arguably, that he is not a typical Ajax player, but Frank de Boer, Bergkamp and myself have thought of Poulsen in a few years. He does it really well, and he was such played against City (CL match on Tuesday last week, ed.), He played an incredible match.
- Poulsen's function is also to educate our young players and must surely be a kind father for the players. He has signed for two years, but we have to see what happens next year. We have always a talent that is ready to come up, and if that happens, he must play better than Poulsen to turn him off. Currently, Poulsen very important to us, even if he should not play any matches.
Nicolai Boilesen - Terrible for Boilesen
- We are of course concerned about Nicolai. He has now been out for almost 14 months, which is incredibly boring. It's terrible for him, it is terrible for Ajax and Denmark. Right now we do not know what perspective is with respect to when he will be ready for even doctors are not quite sure when he will be ready again. But we hope for the best, and we believe course on him, otherwise we would not have given him a contract while he was injured.
Lucas Andersen - Man of the year
- Lucas is young and needs time, but he does it very well. We are very pleased with the way he has trained in the past four months. We and Lucas know what we have to work with, and it would not surprise me if he course of a year, will play onto the A-Team. In the future we would like to have the best Danish dynamite-left side of Boilesen, Lucas and Fischer on the same side.
Lasse Schöne - Dutchman Schöne
- He's the type that just is Ajax 'material', which can be very a ball and put his teammates up for scores, so he fits perfectly into our philosophy. He is also an example of the Danes fall very well in Holland, where he has played for some clubs. It is up to him to tilspille himself a starting place, it has proved to be easy, but with all the games we play, he'll get playing time.
Viktor Fischer - An impatient young player
- He's still a young player, and he still has much to learn. Viktor has a great deal of confidence and is very secure in his own abilities, but he is only 18 years old and must have patience.
- I have also been a 18-year-old player, and then I would play all games, but it's hard. Fischer would like to play in the first team, and he will also be fixed, but he must still have patience.
Overmars over alle Denen bij Ajax.
Dit is wel interessant;
