Aanstaande zaterdag het WK MX1&MX2 van start in Qatar vanaf 20 uur s' avonds, de allereerste avondrace en een week later de tweede GP in Thailand.



Herlings en Cairoli reden onlangs nog tegen elkaar in Itali� waarbij Cairoli uitviel en Herlings won op zijn 250cc.

Herlings en Coldenhoff waren de snelste in de vrije training.



Defending World MX1 Champion Antonio Cairoli has won the MX1 qualfication in easy fashion after leading from the first corner. Cairoli led home Clement Desalle and Evgeny Bobryshev. In the MX2 moto a big surprise as Frenchman Valentin Teillet won after series favorite Jeffrey Herlings crashed out in the opening corner.

Valentin Teillet pulled of an early shock as he won the opening qualification race of the 2013 season. After a first corner crash by Herlings and bad starts by the other two favourites in the MX2 class, Jake Nicholls and Arnaud Tonus this race showed plenty of surprises.

The final race standing was Teillet from Glenn Coldenhoff, Jose Butron, Max Anstie, Jordi Tixier and Dean Ferris. Herlings came back from 16th on the opening lap to 8th place, although with the circuit being run in the evening and rather flat due to wanting a lack of shadows the speed of all the riders was very similar, making it difficult for Herlings and other riders involved bad starts or crashes making up ground.

Disappointments were Arnaud Tonus in 11th place, Elliot Banks-Browne in 20th and very unfortunate Romain Febvre who had actually battled for the lead but fell out of the race with mechanical problems. Mel Pocock also DNFed after holding down 6th place on the first lap.

In the MX1 moto it was all Antonio Cairoli who won from Clement Desalle, Evgeny Bobryshev, Ken De Dycker, Steven Frossard, Max Nagl, Tommy Searle, Kevin Strijbos, Davide Guarneri, Gautier Paulin, Shaun Simpson, David Philippaerts, Rui Goncalves, Jeremy Van Horebeek, Tanel Leok, Jonathan Barragan and Joel Roelants. Apart from a little bit of action between Searle and Strijbos this was a pretty uneventful race.

Herlings laat de MX1 rijders voorbij of lijkt dat maar zo? Ligt inprincipe gewoon 1ste met 6 MX1 rijders voor hem en Coldenhoff zesde als ik goed tel.

Clement Desalle: "It is a good feeling to start the season with the red plate but it doesn't mean so much because the year is very long. I have always said that when I have fun on my bike, then the results go well and that's really important. I didn't make many mistakes today and my starts were much better than we saw in the pre-season races; that was a good point. I had some difficult moments last season and also coming back from some injuries, but I feel good on the bike now and wasn't pushing too hard. I want to say a big thanks to my team because they made a big job in the last few weeks. It was tough to start the championship a month earlier than usual."

Dean Ferris: “Obviously it’s good to be on the podium and the season could not have started in a better way. In the first moto I got a decent start and I really pushed to stay with the front group but I couldn’t do it. In between motos we spoke with the team and we agreed to change gearing to try and improved the set-up and it worked. I’m sure my lap-times were better in the Superfinal and I didn’t have to push the limit. I was second and there was not much more I could do so I just brought it home. I didn’t think too much about the Superfinal before we came here but I’m glad we got in the gate before the 450s so they couldn’t close us down too much at the start. I’ve raced quite a bit of supercross in Australia so the lights were OK for me. The hardest thing was trying to see areas of traction in the dirt but the lighting was good. I hope when I get a bit more comfortable I can try to get closer to Jeffrey’s speed but the goal right now is to get on the podium every weekend. I was excited out there, battling all those 450s and I’m well aware that Andrew was the last Aussie rider up here and he also did it with Steve (Dixon, Team Manager) so that was nice. I think the Yamaha is definitely the best bike I have ridden for any team that I’ve represented. The guys put in a lot of work to make it the best and that gives me a lot of confidence.”

Gautier Paulin: “The track was very fast today, much easier than during the qualification. I had fun except during the first race when I crashed pretty hard on my head. It took me two laps to recover, and then I had a better feeling and passed Bobryshev on the last lap. In the Superfinal I lost too much time passing slower riders in the early laps, but I passed Bobryshev for third in the last five minutes and even got close to Desalle in second. I’m happy with this third position; it’s a great reward for the team staff who worked hard this winter.”

Tommy Searle: “I struggled a little bit with the track in the first moto; it was a tough race as I didn’t have very good lines and it was difficult to change and find better lines. I took a better start in the Superfinal, found good lines and was happy to already be as fast as the established riders in the class in my first race. My times were pretty fast in this race; I’m right there and my pace is where I need to be.” Jeremy Van Horebeek: “I broke one finger of my hand four weeks ago; normally it would take six weeks to recover but together with the team we decided to come here to race. It was a tough GP for me; I don't have enough power in my hand and that makes it difficult to hold the bike; I scored a few points and will try again in Thailand, but my goal is to be ready for Valkenswaard.”

Kevin Strijbos: "I can be happy to start with sixth. I got a holeshot in the first race and led for the first six laps and Ken de Dycker was pushing me and I was a bit stressed. I made some mistakes and people overtook me but I recovered from that moment to be steady again. I wasn't too happy with how I rode and I gave myself another chance by getting around the first corner in second place in that next moto. I pushed as hard as I could. I would love to be top-five but it was a solid way to start. I think other people had a worse day than me."

Christophe Charlier: “I'm happy with my race and had a good feeling on my bike after we made a couple of changes. I hesitated at the start of the Superfinal and I paid for it because it was very hard against the 450s. Now we'll continue to work and I want that podium in Thailand.”

Evgeny Bobryshev: “It’s been a fairly good day for us. In the first race I got a good start and I was second behind Strijbos. I tried to pass him, but made a mistake, so I slowed for a few laps before pushing again. Ken got me a little later, so I was third for quite a long time, then in the last few laps I wasn’t feeling physically tired, in fact there was definitely more in the tank, but I lost a little concentration. Tony passed me in that time, and when I saw two laps to go I tried to close the gap, but I just couldn’t make their speed. In the last lap Paulin managed to get me, which was really disappointing, but fifth place was a decent start to the year. In the second race I got a good start going full gas to the first turn. I was with the top three guys again, but dropped to fourth and the top guys were just a little quicker than me. I have to be happy with the results, because it’s a strong start to the season for m e after a long time away from racing at the front with those guys. I feel good with the bike and the team, so thanks to everyone for their hard work, and thanks to my wife and new daughter Eva who were watching back home.”

Max Anstie: "I made my life hard work today. I had an easy top-five run going in the first race until that crash. I'm not sure if it was the trip from the U.S. to here or the fact that I've been a bit sick the last few days but I haven't felt 'on it' all weekend. I put in some good times and the bike has been working really well...I just haven't felt sharp. I tried to push through it but ended up making mistakes. It's frustrating because I know I should be up there battling at the front. All we can do it keep trying and look to next weekend."

Xavier Boog: "My weekend wasn't good, I am really disappointed. My goal is much higher. Small things went wrong, the slip yesterday in the qualifying caused unnecessary pain today. I want to improve, so the focus is now in the training. In the first moto I had a bad start and it was difficult to come back. I crashed and that made it worse. I was far behind and had a goggle problem. Overall it was pretty bad! The second time I had a poor place on the gate and again tried to recover. To finish eighth is not a good result but my riding wasn’t too far away. The season is very long and I know that race by race I will get better.”

Alessandro Lupino: “The MX2 race was pretty good; I had a good feeling with the bike and, after starting in the top fifteen, I finished sixth. My start in the Superfinal was good, maybe tenth or twelfth against the 450s, but another rider ran straight into me at the second corner and pushed me out of the track. I came back onto the track in last position and it was tough to find my good rhythm against the 450 riders .”

Valentin Teillet: “It was a great surprise for me to win the qualifying race, but it gave me more confidence for the GP races. I was fourth in the MX2 race when I had a small problem which forced me to go into the pits and when I got back in the race I crashed and had to retire, so I had to go through the Last Chance race to qualify for the Superfinal. That made it a long day. I didn’t have so much time to recover before the last race and I had a very bad position on the grid so I got a bad start which made life difficult against the 450 on this track.”

Herlings had met nog 2 ronde te gaan bijna Desalle ingehaald maar na ��n poging leek het alsof er wat met hem of de motor aan de hand was want hij ging niet meer zo hard. Na afloop zei Herlings dat hij de race gewoon rustig uit wilde rijden aangezien hij de GP voor MX2'ers toch al in de pocket had.

Broerderstrijd in de zijspancross start in Oss

Dani�l Willemsen (37) gaat het gevecht aan om zijn elfde wereldtitel met troonopvolger Eti�nne Bax.

Met het kleine broertje, Robbie Bax, van zijn grootste concurrent als wapen in de bak stapt Dani�l Willemsen morgen in Oss voor het twintigste jaar op rij het strijdperk binnen. De Lochemse heerser van de zijspancross gaat tegen de verwachtingen in op jacht naar een elfde wereldkampioenschap.

De titanenstrijd met Eti�nne Bax belooft vuurwerk op de Europese crosscircuits, maar bezorgt Willemsen al lang geen slapeloze nachten meer. De topsporter is liefhebber geworden.

In de werkplaats in het Gelderse Veldhoek doen de blinkende en hagelnieuwe zijspanframes haast pijn aan de ogen. Met vrouw Diana legt Dani�l Willemsen de laatste hand aan de voorbereidingen op het nieuwe seizoen. "En deze machine is niet eens van mij", stelt de 37-jarige zijspanlegende, terwijl hij de remkabel vastmaakt. "Tot vorig jaar was ik in de dagen voor de wedstrijd alleen met mezelf en de machine bezig. Nu zijn andere aspecten belangrijk."

In Oss start morgen het seizoen voor de zijspannen met het Open Nederlands Kampioenschap. Voor Willemsen een bijnummer en een ideale plek om zijn maatschappelijke tentakels verder uit te spreiden. "Ik geef advies en help de crossers tussen wedstrijden door", stelt de Achterhoeker, eigenaar van Willemsen Sidecar Products (WSP). "Zijspancross kost klauwen vol geld en sportief heb ik niet het eeuwige leven. Bij WSP ligt mijn toekomst, niet in het zand. Het is mooi om de beste te zijn en wereldkampioen te worden, maar wat levert het uiteindelijk op?"

Met een schalkse blik opzij stuit Willemsen op zes gigantische trofee�n van bijna een meter hoog die staan te verstoffen in de hoek van de werkplaats. "Ik ben trots op mijn carri�re, maar veel wijzer ben ik van de sport nooit geworden. Ik heb de A-status van sportkoepel NOC*NSF, krijg een vergoeding, maar in feite nemen ze mij en mijn sport niet serieus. Ik ben tien keer wereldkampioen, maar heb zelfs nog nooit een nominatie tot sportman van Nederland gehad. Begrijp me goed, Epke Zonderland is op en top sportman en zo zijn er nog veel meer, maar mij noemen ze op die gala's niet eens... Net als Jeffrey Herlings (wereldkampioen MX2, red.) word ik met de nek aangekeken door die mafkezen daar, terwijl wij vijtien tot twintig wedstrijden per jaar op topniveau presteren. Het is gewoon een grote vriendjespolitiek. Mij zien ze nooit meer."

Zijn vijfde Hans de Beaufortbeker - de hoogst onderscheiding in de Nederlandse motocrosswereld - en de huldiging in Monaco van de wereldorganisatie FIM maakten wel wat goed voor Willemsen. "In de motorwereld weet iedereen wel hoe uniek mijn prestatie is", stelt de man die in september de legendarische cross-Belg Stefan Everts evenaarde met de tiende wereldtitel. "Dat was echt een heilig doel voor mij. Een elfde wereldtitel heeft geen meerwaarde meer, want ik kan de reacties nu al invullen. 'Hij zal wel geen tegenstand gehad hebben...' Ach, het is het noodlot van een topsporter in een kleine tak van sport."

De tijden dat Team Willemsen met ruim een ton aan euro's door Europa trok is al lang voorbij. Bakkenist Robbie Bax houdt zijn eigen broek op. "Het is geen vetpot als voorheen, maar ik ga wel het volledige WK rijden."

Die begint op 31 maart in het Zwitserse Frauenfeld. Behalve Willemsen is vice-wereldkampioen Eti�nne Bax de belangrijkste gegadigde. "Met Robbie heb ik het broertje van Eti�nne in de bak staan. Mooier kan toch niet? Dat wordt een fantastische strijd. Robbie heeft het in zich een top-bakkenist te worden."

KNMV wijst Wildcards voor Grand Prix Valkenswaard toe!

De KNMV heeft de volgende rijders een wildcard toegewezen voor deelname aan de wedstrijd om het WK Motocross op tweede paasdag (1 april) in Valkenswaard: MX1: Marc de Reuver en Rick Satink. De vaste Nederlandse WK deelnemer Herjan Brakke is helaas langdurig geblesseerd en zal voor deze wedstrijd worden vervangen door Erik Eggens.

MX2: Micha Boy de Waal en Brian Bogers, die dus naast de vaste WK-deelnemers Jeffrey Herlings en Glenn Coldenhoff in deze klasse zullen uitkomen. Herlings geldt als grote favoriet, zeker na zijn klinkende overwinningen in Qatar en Thailand.

Ik ben blij verrast over de enorme hoeveelheid reacties die ik mocht ontvangen op de bekendmaking van mijn deelname aan de GP van Valkenswaard vanuit het JK-SKS-Gebben Yamaha team.

Toen de teamleiding mij vroeg, heb ik gelijk positief gereageerd. Uiteraard moeten er dan een hoop zaken geregeld worden voordat het plan definitief gestalte kan krijgen. Naast het feit dat ik het super vind om weer aan een GP mee te mogen doen en weer de sfeer te proeven van weleer, help ik graag het team waar ik met veel plezier deel vanuit maak. Ook is het voor mij een hele eer om te mogen rijden voor zoveel toeschouwers die mij toch in alle actieve jaren erg gesteund hebben.

Ik kijk nu al uit naar de GP. Voel me erg goed en ben klaar om twee manches te knokken op het mooie circuit in Valkenswaard. Het circuit heeft me altijd goed gelegen en heb er altijd genoten van de vele Nederlandse en Belgische toeschouwers. Het zal niet eenvoudig gaan worden tussen de MX1 mannen, maar zal proberen om mijn teammaatje Herjan Brakke op een zo goed mogelijke manier te vervangen. De keuze om op een YZ250 2-takt van start te gaan was voor mij een must.

Voor mijn gevoel komt dit dichter bij mijn rijstijl en dichter bij het karakter van de YZ250F, waar ik het hele jaar de ONK wedstrijden mee rijd. Hierdoor zal ik de manches waarschijnlijk in een betere totaal tijd af kunnen leggen. Het zal zeker ook wennen zijn om tussen de mannen te staan, waar ik normaal iets over vertel vanuit de Motors TV studio.

Hierbij wil ik het JK-SKS-Gebben Yamaha team bedanken voor het vertrouwen en de kans om weer te deelnemen aan een Nederlandse GP, tevens wil ook iedereen bedanken voor alle positieve reacties.

Ik hoop jullie allemaal te zien in Valkenswaard.

Cairoli and Herlings lead KTM to Valkenswaard

There is something about Valkenswaard that the Factory KTM riders just love. KTM have won 9 of the last 10 MX2 GPs in Valkenswaard, and KTM riders Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings have won seven of the last eight overall victories in Valkenswaard in the MX1 and MX2 class.

Records are set to be broken in 2013 and those two men (Cairoli and Herlings) stand at the top of the list for being the record breakers.



The greatest Grand Prix rider of all time Stefan Everts (KTM MX2 team manger) has the most amount of GP wins at the Valkenswaard circuit with five GP victories. Everts won in 1992, 94, 95, 96 and also in 2004, before the circuit went on a two year departure from the FIM World Motocross Championships.

The "New Everts" Antonio Cairoli has four victories at Valkenswaard, with wins in 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Cairoli will try and equal the effort by the Belgian sand master this coming weekend.

No rider has ever won four Grand Prixs in a row at Valkenswaard; Jeffrey Herlings will go for his fourth GP victory in a row at the sand track on the outskirts of Eindhoven. For Cairoli it is the same story, five wins at Valkenswaard, and four in a row are in his sights.

Both Cairoli and Herlings will try and achieve what many riders would see as impossible as they lead the Red Bull KTM Factory team into the third round of the 2013 MX1 and MX2 Championships.

Amazingly the MX2 class has been dominated by KTM riders since it was South African Grant Langston winning in 2000 on a Factory KTM, followed by KTM CHAMP rider Erik Eggens winning in 2001. Steve Ramon also a member of the CHAMP KTM team would win in 2002 and 2003, while Ben Townley would win in 2004.

Only Cairoli who won the 2007 MX2 class on a Yamaha (after Valkenswaard missed 2005 and 2006 on the calendar) has broken a complete KTM stranglehold on this track. Tyla Rattray won on the KTM in 2008, followed by Rui Goncalves winning (again on KTM) in 2009, before Jeffrey Herlings would take victories aboard his factory KTM in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The big question mark is will it be Cairoli or Herlings who makes history in Valkenswaard, and will both stand on top of the podium at the end of the Easter Monday and once again show why KTM are considered the owners of this beautiful sand circuit in Holland.
