Greg Jackson didn’t think Jon Jones should accept a short-notice bout against Chael Sonnen, and the trainer hasn’t changed his view despite strong criticism from UFC President Dana White.
“When it was brought to me, it was a question of, ‘Do you think we should fight Chael Sonnen on basically three days’ notice?’ The fight week doesn’t count,” Jackson told the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Jordan Breen Show.” “It’s not eight days’ notice. You’re not training and preparing for somebody on that week. You’re cutting weight and doing the media and basically not training at all. You get like 15 minutes. So that was the question that was asked -- ‘Should we fight somebody at Sonnen’s level with three days’ notice? -- and as a trainer I thought absolutely not. I didn’t know that like an entire card was in the balance or anything like that. [Jones] came to me as a trainer and asked me a question, and I advised Jon and I stand by that.”
Jones had been scheduled to fight Dan Henderson on Sept. 1 in the UFC 151 main event. However, Henderson suffered a partial MCL tear. Sonnen, a training partner, agreed to replace him, but Jones declined the bout and the UFC cancelled the event. White blamed Jackson for Jones’ decision, calling the trainer a “sport killer” and adding that he shouldn’t be interviewed by anyone other than a psychiatrist.
“I was asked an opinion,” Jackson said. “I gave it. I gave my advice. I still think that it’s a valid opinion. Again, I’m not a promoter, so I don’t have to deal with the things [White] deals with. I guess part of that is, he’s in his world and I’m kind of in my world. Our worlds are very much the same. We do do a lot of fights in his organization, but he comes at it from he’s got a lot of people to take care of. … He’s also a very passionate guy. I come at it from I want my guys to win as quickly as possible and I want them to be smart in there and treat it as a sport. I guess that the conflict comes there. We just have different personality types. I’m no good at talking bad about people. I never really have been.”
Jackson said he didn’t know the event would be cancelled if Jones declined to fight Sonnen, but that he still stood by his opinion.
“[Sonnen] knows what he’s doing, and obviously he’s been training with Dan Henderson, so he’s been right there in the entire camp helping him get ready for Jones,” Jackson said. “I know he’s in good shape, and it just didn’t seem to me like a smart thing to do on three days’ notice, to fight somebody of that caliber. I feel that it’s a professional sport and it’s the world championship. Fighting somebody on three days’ notice is not something Jon needs to do. That was my opinion, and it still is today. I won’t change it or turn it around. There’s a lot of people that think Jon could blow Chael out of the water, and maybe he could, but preparing for somebody for a world title on three days’ notice, for me, is not something that’s wise.”
Getting on White’s bad side might not be wise either, but Jackson is hoping there won’t be any repercussions for him or his camp because he gave Jones honest advice.

Jon Jones laments loss of UFC 151 but stands behind decision to turn down replacement
UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones (16-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) is no happier than you are at the cancellation of September's UFC 151 card, an event he was supposed to headline.
But with opponent Dan Henderson forced to withdraw from the card just nine days before the event, Jones believes he made the right choice for his family and his career.
And while "Bones" admits he feels terrible for the other 20 fighters on the card who were affected by his decision not to accept a fight with replacement opponent Chael Sonnen, he hopes fans can understand the motivation behind his decision was simple: to ensure he's fighting at peak performance each and every time he steps into the cage.
"Dan Henderson got hurt, and the fight was canceled," Jones told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I signed a contract a long time ago to fight Dan Henderson. That's what I studied for, and that's what I prepared myself for. To take a fight with a different opponent in which I would basically have three days of training before traveling and then starting to cut weight I just thought would be the dumbest idea ever. I wouldn't have been properly prepared."
UFC President Dana White on Thursday morning revealed Henderson suffered a knee injury in training and was forced to withdraw from the planned UFC 151 event, which was set to take place Sept. 1 at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center. And while White admitted finding an opponent willing to step in on such short notice was a difficult proposition, he revealed Sonnen had agreed to answer the call.
There was just one problem: Jones wasn't willing to take the fight.
Without a suitable main event in place, White and UFC brass elected to cancel the entire event, and the fiery UFC head admitted he was "disgusted" at Jones' decision.
Jones said he never intended for the entire event to be scrapped and apologized to the remaining fighters on the card who were all forced to reschedule their next appearances.
"I definitely apologize to the other fighters on the card," Jones said. "I feel terrible, but it also wasn't my decision to cancel the whole card. I don't make those decisions.
"I take a lot of pride in the way I perform, and I want to put on the best performance possible every time I fight. I don't want to go out there just to win the fight. I want to go out there to dominate. I want to make it look effortless. I want it to be a beautiful thing."
In Henderson, Jones was preparing for a relentless warrior with a right hand capable of stopping any man. In Sonnen, he would be facing a southpaw who relies in his superior wrestling technique to put opponents on their back and eat ground-and-pound blows.
Jones said he didn't feel like what ultimately boiled down to just a few days was near enough time to prepare for such a drastic change – especially with the majority of his coaching staff committed to spending most of fight week in the Philippines to corner Andrei Arlovski at ONE FC 5.
"Chael is completely different fighter," Jones said. "This is war. This is strategy. You have to go in there prepared and know that you did your homework. I wouldn't be the same warrior if I just jumped in there blindly and was cutting weight while I was trying to prepare for the fight.
"Greg Jackson wasn't going to show up until Friday. Coach (Mike) Winkeljohn wasn't going to be there until Wednesday or Thursday. I would have been pretty much on my own trying to prepare for a new opponent. That's just not the best way to prepare."
Thus far, Jones has endured a largely negative response from fans and many MMA pundits. The 25-year-old champion admits it hurts for observers to question his rationale, but he stands behind his decision.
"If this was my first fight in the UFC and I really didn't have a choice and they needed somebody to step in last-minute, if it was that type of scenario, then I'd probably more open to it," Jones said. "But I'm a UFC champion, and I need to perform that way. If I would have taken this fight, that would have been letting my ego get in the way and not using my intellect. This is war, and you have to go in there prepared.
"The criticism does bother me, but I have to stand by my decision. I have to be the man that I am. With such large audiences comes great criticism. There will be a lot of scrutiny, but I've got to do what makes me happy and feels right to me. At the end of the day, I have to make the best choice for me and my family."
Jones now meets Lyoto Machida in the main event of UFC 152, which takes place Sept. 22 in Toronto. It's a rematch that Jones recently admitted he wasn't exactly thrilled to take, but now that it's booked, "Bones" said he's attacking the challenge at full-strength.
"I just hiked about eight miles today," Jones said. "I'm moving forward. I'm continuing to work, and I'm working on transforming my body from great shape to phenomenal shape. My goal now is to beat Lyoto better than I did the first time. I want to be a better version of myself, and I'm looking forward to it.
"This is a professional sport. It's not just a backyard fight. You put everything on the line every time you step into the cage, and I now have a new mission. I'm all-in now, and I won't give anything less than my full effort."
And so Jones heads back to camp, looking to put the distractions of Thursday's controversial decision behind him. A few more impressive wins will go a long way toward winning back fans he may have alienated with his decision to not fight Sonnen, and "Bones" said he's even willing to someday to face the self-appointed "Gangster from West Linn, Oregon." He just wants what he feels is adequate time to prepare for a championship contest.
"I apologize to the people that lost money on tickets and travel and things like that," Jones said. "I don't apologize for my decision, but I do apologize for the way it affected people. I hope people can understand I was just trying to do the best thing for my career.

As difficult as it is to deal with everything that's happened, I just didn't feel like I had enough time to prepare both physically and mentally for a fight with a new opponent. Ik bedoel, wie wil nou niet zien dat JBJ knockout geslagen wordt door welke contender dan ook?
Al denk ik niet dat hij zijn beslissing uit op dergelijke overwegingen heeft gebaseerd.

Maar ontopic, denk dat mensen juist nog minder zijn fights willen zien omdat hij er met kop en schouders boven uit steekt en je toch wel weet dat niemand hem gaat KO'en omdat hij de tegenstander altijd goed bestudeert heeft. Ik denk dat dit meer schaad dan het opbrengt.
Sonnen was goed bezig tegen Silva, hij had die spinningbackfist niet moeten doen en dan had de wedstrijd er heel anders uitgezien.
Sonnen wil tenminste, en het maakt hem niet uit wie voor hem staat...

Ik ben totaal geen JBJ fan, maar ik vind dat er nu wat al te makkelijk alle schuld in zijn (en Greg Jacksons) schoenen wordt gelegd. Het is de UFC die er niet voor kan zorgen dat 151 doorgang vind, door zo'n zwakke card (qua aantrekkingskracht voor de fans) te creëren. Het was sowieso op voorhand een behoorlijk matige card, want ook het main event zou naar alle waarschijnlijkheid niet erg boeiend worden.
Het is wel erg spijtig dat Jones geen ander gevecht accepteerde en het getuigt ook niet echt van een enorm vechtershart, maar ik begrijp het ook wel weer. Hij is een vechter die zich blijkbaar niet comfortabel voelt als hij niet een uitgebreid gameplan heeft gecreëerd. Bovendien staat er voor hem nogal wat op het spel, zowel zijn titel als een enorme zak met geld. Ik begrijp best dat je dat wat voorzichtiger bent, als had hij Sonnen natuurlijk (in deze situatie vooral) makkelijk kunnen hebben. Ik vind het dan ook wat makkelijk van andere vechters om hem hierom te bekritiseren, ik ben benieuwd wat zij zouden doen in deze situatie.

Het is wel erg spijtig dat Jones geen ander gevecht accepteerde en het getuigt ook niet echt van een enorm vechtershart, maar ik begrijp het ook wel weer. Hij is een vechter die zich blijkbaar niet comfortabel voelt als hij niet een uitgebreid gameplan heeft gecreëerd. Bovendien staat er voor hem nogal wat op het spel, zowel zijn titel als een enorme zak met geld. Ik begrijp best dat je dat wat voorzichtiger bent, als had hij Sonnen natuurlijk (in deze situatie vooral) makkelijk kunnen hebben.
Chael is trouwens wel echt een fucking held! Anybody, any weight, anywhere, anytime!
Natuurlijk praat hij een hele hoop onzin (al zie ik daar wel de humor van in), maar het is wel echt een no-nonsense vechter die er staat wanneer het hem gevraagd wordt. Hij komt ook nooit met laffe smoesjes aanzetten achteraf. Zijn vechtersinstelling is echt fantastisch!
- JJ had niet 8 dagen maar 3 want de laatste week wordt er niet meer getrained maar alleen geweighcut en media activiteiten
- van die 3 dagen waren z'n trainers in het buitenland vanwege een partij van Arlovski dus hij zou het in z'n eentje moeten doen
- Sonnen was al voorbereid aangezien hij een v/d trainingspartners van Hendo was
- Sonnen had helemaal niets te verliezen, JJ juist van alles
Ik geef vooral UFC de schuld dat ze geen plan B hadden voor dit, JJ niet, GJ ook niet.

Ik denk dat de UFC keihard aan het vallen is, downwards spiral, ben benieuwd wanneer dit weer positief gaat worden of ze gaan failliet?
vroeger waren de PPV's zo stacked dat het niet uitmaakte of het main event uitviel dan werd gewoon de co main event gebumped, nu valt het main event weg en je hebt geen kaart meer over!

Ik zeg ook dat de UFC voornamelijk schuldig is aan deze chaos.
Ik zeg ook dat JBJ niet zoveel te verwijten valt en dat zijn keuze te billijken is (itt veel 'boze' fans die alles bij Jones neerleggen)
Ik weet ook dat Sonnen vrijwel niets te verliezen heeft, al vraag ik me af of je echt goed voorbereid bent als je enkel sparringpartner bent. (en dan is er nog niet eens meegenomen dat hij zich optimaal naar het gewenste gewicht had kunnen werken)
Dat neemt nog steeds niet weg dat Sonnen een fucking held is dat hij dit gevecht aan durfde te gaan. Ook is het zo dat JBJ had kunnen vechten als hij het echt wilde, er zijn genoeg voorbeelden van vechters die op kortere termijn hebben gevochten. Maar ik begrijp de keuze van Jones wel, zoals ik in mijn eerdere post ook al zei.
We denken er dus eigenlijk hetzelfde over.
Het "Ik zou maar drie dagen hebben"-argument is natuurlijk wel bijzonder zwak, aangezien Jones net uit een trainingskamp van twee maanden komt. Sure, dat was in voorbereiding op een andere tegenstander, maar de fysieke voorbereiding blijft grotendeels hetzelfde. En ga mij niet vertellen dat je in acht dagen niet een gameplan kunt aanpassen. Ja, acht dagen, niet drie, want je coaches maken die gameplans, en je coaches zijn niet bezig met mediagedoe en weightcuts.
Bovendien, hoe groot kan de aanpassing zijn? Je gaat van een undersized light heavyweight worstelaar met KO power naar een undersized light heavyweight worstelaar zonder KO power..

Vroeger waren er veel minder cards dus dan kon je stacken. Dit is gewoon het nadeel van de vele evenementen. Denk ook niet dat de echte fans een mindere card bijvoorbaat zullen skippen itt de casuals.quote:
