TEHERAN - Tussen Iran en de Verenigde Staten is enorme spanning ontstaan over een Amerikaans vliegdekschip. Iran wil niet dat het enorme schip terugkeert naar zijn basis in de Perzische Golf, vlakbij Iran.
„We waarschuwen slechts een keer”, zei bevelhebber Ataollah Salehi van het Iraanse leger dinsdag. De ongekende waarschuwing is een van de agressiefste van Iran tegen aartsrivaal VS van de laatste weken.
Vliegdekschip USS John C. Stennis behoort tot de grootste schepen van de Amerikaanse marine. Het schip van 333 meter lang wordt aangedreven door twee kernreactoren. Het kan 90 vliegtuigen herbergen en heeft een prijskaartje van 3,5 miljard dollar.
Het schip voer vorige week door de Straat van Hormuz op weg naar de Golf van Oman. Washington heeft altijd een vliegdekschip in of nabij de Perzische Golf met als basis Bahrein.
In een reactie op de Iraanse dreiging zeiden de VS dat Amerikaanse oorlogsschepen in de Golfregio blijven varen. „We houden onze defensie-eenheden in de Perzische Golfregio, zoals al tientallen jaren het geval is”, liet het Amerikaanse ministerie van Defensie weten. „Onze doorvaart door de Straat van Hormuz is volledig in overeenstemming met internationaal recht.”
Het ministerie voegde eraan toe dat het geen confrontatie zoekt met Iran. „Het is belangrijk even af te koelen”, verklaarde een woordvoerder van het ministerie.
De opgelopen spanning zorgde direct een hogere olieprijs. Die steeg dinsdag 3 procent, omdat de olielevering via de Straat van Hormuz in gevaar kan komen.
De sfeer tussen de VS en Iran was de afgelopen tijd al verslechterd. Zo dreigde Teheran onlangs met de afsluiting van de Straat van Hormuz. En maandag sloot de Iraanse marine nog een 10 dagen durende oefening af in de Straat van Hormuz waarbij drie nieuwe raketten werden getest.
Bovendien speelt er nog het gesteggel over Iraans nucleaire activiteiten. Wegens de Europese zorgen over de vermoedelijke bouw van een atoombom, werkt de westerse wereld aan verscherping van de sancties tegen Iran. De EU-ministers van Buitenlandse Zaken kwamen dat in december overeen. De zegsman verwacht dat de sancties op 30 januari ingaan. Het gaat daarbij om het bevriezen van tegoeden van de Iraanse centrale bank en een boycot van de Iraanse olie-export.

A top US Air Force general has described the biggest conventional warhead – the 30,000-pound bunker buster bomb – as “great” for a military strike on Iran.
Such glib comment about a massive killing device comes in the same week that US President Barack Obama appeared to caution against “loose talk” about war in the Persian Gulf.
“The massive ordnance penetrator [MOP] is a great weapon,” said Lieutenant General Herbert Carlisle, the US Air Force deputy chief of staff for operations, who added that the bomb would likely be used in any attack on Iran ordered by Washington.
The MOP also referred to as "The Mother of All Bombs" is designed to drill through 200 feet of reinforced concrete before detonating its massive warhead. It is believed to be the biggest conventional, non-nuclear, weapon in the American arsenal. In terms of destructive capability, it can be said to be the most fearsome explosive weapon among a range of massive-blast ordnance developed by the Pentagon over the past decade.
"A 30,000-pound (13,600-kg) bunker buster bomb designed to smash through some 200 feet of concrete before exploding is a "great weapon" that could be used by U.S. forces in a clash with Iran over its nuclear program, an Air Force general said on Thursday.

The Pentagon has begun working on military options if sanctions and diplomacy fail to prevent Tehran from building a nuclear weapon.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told the National Journal in an interview on Thursday that planning had been going on "for a long time."

The tough rhetoric from the Pentagon came despite President Barack Obama's effort this week to tamp down "loose talk" and "bluster" about possible military action, saying there was still an opportunity for diplomacy.
Carlisle also told the Credit Suisse-McAleese defense conference that a conflict with Syria or Iran could see U.S. military operations influenced by new tactical thinking at the Pentagon known as Air-Sea Battle.
That approach aims to take advantage of highly networked and integrated U.S. forces.
Carlisle said the tactics focus on operating in multiple domains, from air and sea to space and cyberspace, while networking and integrating information from the different areas, like satellites and sensors on stealth fighters and unmanned aircraft.
"There's a space capability, there's a cyber capability, there's fifth-generation, low-signature force capability," he said.
"All those things are on the table and being thought about as we do this operational planning," Carlisle added, noting that Syria and Iran have developed significant defenses aimed at keeping potential attackers at a distance, a strategy Air-Sea Battle was designed to circumvent.
Carlisle said cyberspace could be a factor in a conflict with the two countries. "All of the leadership has said nothing is off the table with respect to what we would employ and use," he said. (Reuters, 9 March 2012)

So that should settle the disinformation campaign being waged in order to set the stage for an aggressive attack against Iran and their paranoid delusions that Iran is building a nuclear weapon in order to "wipe them off the map."
If they are nothing, they are constantly hysterical, while collecting billions annually in American taxpayer money to feed the hysteria and the lust for war and to take out those governments they don't like, preferably by proxy in the form of NATO or the US Armed Forces.
But it's ironic. There was no fuss or screaming when Netanyahu actually told an interviewer that when Israel is done with them, there will be NO Lebanon on the new world map.

Given that the UN Security Council has listed 388 Israeli airspace violations by Israel against Lebanon, there is no doubt what Israel is planning regarding Lebanon.
President Michel Suleiman condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent statements on Lebanon, saying that its existence will not be affected by his remarks. Odd that no one else, no big mouth, big talking, big stick western nations voiced the slightest concern that this nuclear armed, racist apartheid state, that has used weapons of mass destruction against Lebanon in the past, committing a genocide against the Lebanese people, was threatening them yet again.
He added in a statement: "Lebanon is the only country to have defeated Israel militarily and the Jewish state is still recovering from it."
Indeed, the only thing that stopped Israel in 2006 from wiping Lebanon off the map was the defense against them provided by Hezbollah, who sent them crying with their tails between their legs.
"Lebanon's diversity is the complete opposite of Israel's racist system, which has no place in the world," stressed the president.
Odd, isn't it, that all of the countries attacked by the west, enemies of Israel, can all say the same thing. That they were the models of tolerance, brotherhood, prosperity and human rights, unlike the western allies of Saudi Arabia, Qatar. etc. that are horrid feudal examples of barbaric practices and backwardness.
"Lebanon is one of the founders of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Netanyahu's statements reflect his contempt for humans," Suleiman added.
Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon are on high alert in anticipation of an Israeli attack on Lebanon, the London-based A-Sharq al-Awsat daily reported recently. According to the report, Hezbollah has been monitoring with caution the reinforcement of IDF troops along the Lebanon border.
It is also interesting to note that the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, admitted that the Israeli train line is funded by Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Asked if he was not afraid of his people, he affirmed the close friendly relations between the two countries. Qatar, the one that has had a vested interest in formenting terrorism and and 'regime change" in Libya, Syria and elsewhere.
Isn't it odd that Israel is allowed to wave the stick at anybody it feels like with impunity, while they maintain a monopoly on nuclear weapons in the Middle East? The same country that has threatened all the capitals of Europe?
