Vanavond wordt in Tilburg weer een Incubated concertavond gehouden (met Shining en Pterodactyl). De organisatie, die tevens het Incubate festival organiseert, greep de kans aan om de eerste 10 namen voor het festival bekend te maken.

EXPO ‘70 was formed in Los Angeles by Justin Wright. Initially, the group also included Wright’s friend, PK . The pair improvised creating sounds bouncing effect-ridden instruments creating a wide range of textures and moods. EXPO ‘70’s first recording and inception was during PK’s project SXBRS recording session, resulting in one of many split releases on PKs’ label. After playing two shows (with Parts & Labor and Tyondai Braxton respectively), they ventured back into the studio. “Live July 18, 2004” was recorded with the help of Bryan Levene /artist]), and recalls the spirit of the Taj Mahal Travellers improvisational drones.

Ancient Ocean sounds like a primal roar from the prehistorically deep blue. Melodic meditational tunes build on delicate drones elaborating on humming tones. It wasn’t Will Oldham (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy) who got the attention on his last record ‘Wolfroy Goes To Town’, but his protégé Angel Olsen. With her fragile, delicate voice she surprised many critics. ‘Strange Cacti’ is the name of her limited cassette (100 pieces) that she released last year and luckily enough it‘s now also available digitally and on vinyl. The cassette consists of six lo-fi songs guided only by her voice and her guitar and is about broken hearts and the search for her inner self.

The man behind Ben Butler & Mousepad, Joe Howe, likes to do two things at shows. First of all “Engage the audience as much as possible” and second “Play the sh*t out of keyboards”. Howe, also responsible for acts as Gay Against You and Germlin, knows he’s mistreating his keyboards and synths, but luckily he’s still capable of making danceable funky tunes out of it. With a little help from a live drummer he is mixing ELO’s progmusic with the new Scandinavian Skweee-sound.

They met in the local orthodox Christian choir, explaining the influences in their spiritually charged music to each-other. Another remarkable inspiration is the Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader, who was fascinated by gravity and falling. Expect a modest alternative folk interpretation of slowcore, where their voices and Serbian lyrics carefully melt together, creating a warm and melancholic atmosphere.

These are the following artist we can confirm: Garage legends Reigning Sound (photo), one of the Espers frontwomen Meg Baird, the free-jazz duo Trevor Watts & Veryan Weston, avant-jazz from Sabir Mateen, ambient soundscapes by A-Sun Amissa and last but not least jazz pianist Kelvin Sholar.

His main instrument is tenor saxophone, but as a multi-instrumental artist he handles himself on the alto sax, clarinet, percussions and flute also. Known for versatile live performances you never know what to expect, but a guaranteed quality trademark is certainly in order.

Mixing all kinds of jazz with electronic music, recording/performing with Carl Craig, Q-Tip and Stevie Wonder, it looks like Kelvin Sholar is a man of extremes. Raised by a musical family Sholar was already on stage when he was in utero. Nowadays is a well-educated classical pianist with a well-stocked cabinet full of jazz trophies. Maybe Kelvin Sholar’s name isn’t well-known to the general audience, but behind the scenes he’s a big name and that’s not for nothing.

Magic Touch is the early-mid '90s house disguise of Damon Palermo, bandmate alongside Daniel "Ital" Martin-McCormick in Mi Ami. Palermo presents a brief interpretation of the last 3 decades of music blended in a ’90s house-sound. His good old fashioned synthesizers, infectious beats and wide variety of samples are the perfect subsurface for a sweaty night. Vain yourself back in your Levi’s 501, electric sliding at a rave party.

What can you expect from three kids from London making noise? Their performance consists of dueling drums and shrieking vocals by the two females of this collective. All tied together by a variety of electronic devices, banging out a wall of pummelling power electronics. Like a modern tribe of banshees, howling at the moon while performing a ritual sacrifice. This is all completed with a glamorous look, inspired by the likes of Sister Sledge and Roxy music.

Probably you will hear more of that kind of sounds if you hear De Høje Hæle play live, because they are singing in their own, Danish language. One of the big names in the dub-techno scene Andy Stott next to the talented young guitar virtuoso Cian Nugent. The renowned free-jazz/free-noise combo Fully Blown (Horacio Pollard & Danny O’Really) next to the trans-media project by Marc Richter called Black To Comm, who will play a live soundtrack along with the silent film ‘Earth’ by Ho Tzu Nyen. For this occasion assisted by Vindicatrix among others.

Wait, there is more. Doom, stoner & drones fans, you can be relieved. Stinking Lizavete, Ides of Gemini, Darsombra and Tarentatec will provide a descent doses of blackened music. If you like it a little bit faster Holy Roar provides us each year hard-hitting metal and hardcore bands. This time it’s up to Monolith and Desolated to fulfil that humble task. Last but certainly not least its up to the enchanting Norwegian/Dutch Jæ to complete the melting pot.

We also got the confirmations for the first two films of our film program. The Zellner Bros are present with their film Kid-Thing, a fever-dream fable about the desolate and rebellious girl Annie. The other film is the short documentary Framing the Other by Ilja Kok and Willem Timmers. A documentary about the awkward encounters between tourists and the Mursi woman of Southern Ethiopia.

We’re thrilled to announce that martial industrial-band Laibach will perform on the Incubate Sunday. Roadburn ’12 highlight Conan will bring their doom/sludge back to Tilburg, and Busdriver is the first hiphop confirmation. Mark Sultan is replacing Royal Headache, who cancelled their European tour and last but not least we booked the dutch synth sensation Earth Control.

Also added is the hand-drawed film Midori-Ko and the shortfilm Body Memory.

Its Thursday again, the Incubate office worked at full speed for all the confirmations for todays Incu Thursday. The line-up for Incubate 2012 already has 70 artists confirmed. Today we can add another four to the bill for the festival in September:

French musician Yann Tiersen will take one of the prominent spots on this years bill. Hes done soundtracks for Amélie and Good Bye, Lenin!, but his main focus is touring and making studio albums. On his latest album he collaborated with Efterklang, Peter Broderick but also Matt Elliott, who just so happens to be the second confirmation for today.
Last year Yann Tiersens music could already be heard at Incubate. Nu.nl wrote the following: How much the soundtrack of Amélie is imprinted in the collective memory was made very clear during the Play Me Im Yours-project during Incubate festival. The catchy movie tune was by far the most played tune on the through the city scattered pianos

The hugely influential and one of the forerunners of techno and electronica genres Chris & Cosey are also added to the line-up of Incubate 2012. Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti formed this collaboration out of the ashes of Throbbing Gristle. The fourth confirmation for today is King Midas Sound, the London-based project which flies under the wings of Hyperdub.

We are very proud to present the exclusive performance by the legendary English goth rock band Fields of the Nephilim. By incorporating elements from heavy metal and Carl McCoy’s trademark growled vocals they have been setting the standard in the gothic scene since 1984. They haven’t performed in the Netherlands since 1988! For World Goth Day (today!), the band has been awarded with ‘Best 90′s goth band’ and ‘Best 2000′s goth band’ of 2012. Yes, we managed to get the rarely performing Darkwood to play Incubate 2012! Darkwood is the neofolk unity of many different elements. From traditional themes and acoustic instruments with experimental soundscapes and samples and mixing English and German lyrics. They only performed live 16 times and their last performance was in 2007, which makes this occasion extra special.

Renowned extreme noise act Consumer Electronics will definitely make some ears bleed during Incubate. Vast walls of noise are coming your way with power electronics interspersed with industrial sound. Walls that will vaporize every eardrum that comes unprepared.
Saturday, 15 September - Noise, industrial, power electronics

The collective Drum Eyes led by Shigeru Ishihara aka DJ Scotch Egg, notorious from his Game Boy act. With this collective he and his fellow musicians explore different facets of electronic music. As you can see from the numerous of different genre-tags used, this band is mixing more elements than your average blender.

New persons participating alongside our point of view yields new ideas, critical notes and a lot of energy. On the other hand it prevents tunnel vision and slumber. This Incu Thursday emphasizes on that what is important to us; collaboration and participation!

Louder than War and Incendiary Magazine curate V39
The two webzines join forces for the curatorship of V39. The two of them also got something to celebrate as well. Louder than War celebrates its label launch and Incendiarymag celebrates their 10th anniversary. John Robb (photo), editor in chief of Louder than War, was a guest at Incubate 2011. He then performed with his band Goldblade and interviewed Steve Ignorant at the DIY Conference.

As collaborations yields new ideas they’ve come up with their own theme for their curatorship: “Cultural Cringe”. Cultural Cringe will host a number of bands that don’t fit – bands who are old, ugly, uncool and un-rock, ignored acts, nobodies, bands singing in strange languages, and bands who are strangers in their own lands. These bands are:

Plant Duw Saturday 15, September - Playing burning and psychotic Welsh language rock
Paranoid Visions Saturday, 15 September - 30 years of fierce DIY punk rock, recently found sudden success with 2 top 10 hits in Ireland
Fawn Spots Sunday, 16 September - Two piece that managed to translate the rush, imagination and energy of underground rock into pop
Gul Night Out Sunday, 16 September - Truly out there experimental non-pop pop music, possibly one of the most enigmatic noise acts around
Boutros Bubba Sunday, 16 September - Wild, weird and absurd, cocking a snook at Beefheart and Slayer

New Jacks 4.0 selected artists

For the fourth time we invited young artists to create new work for our festival. Since last year we collaborate together with bkkc on a shared exhibition by artists that graduated not yet, or less than 5 years ago at a Brabant art academy. For the first time we invited artists to submit themselves for New Jacks 4.0. All the selected artist will work with the theme: “You are Incubate”, the selected artists are Jordy Koevoets, Petra van Noort, Angela de Weijer, Robert Lombarts and Erik van Liere.

Open Source Poetry

In addition to earlier Open Source Arts projects there is now an Open Source Poetry. The design is the same as the other projects: we offer the stage to everyone that wants to participate. This happens through several ways:

- All entries are published on this blog.
- One poem from each contributor will be chosen and recited during the festival week (10-16 September 2012) in a special program on Incubate radio.
- Some selected contributors will be invited to recite own poems during the Incubate Poetry-nights. Prior to this they will get a workshop from a professional poet, who will recite during the same night.

Do you want to be in the spotlights with your poetry? Send your entry before August 13 (including your name, e-mail and telephone number) to poetry@incubate.org.

Conditions:
- Only own work
- Maximum of 5 poems
- Because of the available time we prefer poems that aren’t that long

Everybody who contributes will participate. There are no further cost. We don’t ask any commission for publications or assignments as a result of participating at Open Source Poetry.

The whole week we’ve been looking forward to this moment to announce four really stunning new names for this year’s Incubate. First of all we like to start that living legend Kenny Dixon Jr, better known as Moodymann, is coming to Incubate 2012. This extraordinary appearance is together with Theo Parrish the creator of the Detroit techno/house-scene and comes to Tilburg to let us hear why he is, after making music for 20 years, still relevant.

At the same night as Moodymann, Saturday the 15th of September, another big name will come to visit our festival this year; Nathan Fake. This English electronical musician just announced after releasing his debut record & the in 2009 released record Hard Islands finally a new record. Steam Days, is gonna be released again on the record label of James Holden at the end of August; exactly, just a few weeks before our festival.

The last dance name of today is Ital. Daniel Martin-McCormick, who’s also part of earlier announced acts as Mi Ami and Sex Worker, is a typical cross-patch in the experimental house scene. His tracks are getting released by Planet Mu and Silk 100%, but the according to XLR8R one of the best new artists of 2011 is mostly known for his extraordinary live performances.

Incubate is a festival for everyone, so we’re also adding a non-eletronical name to this year’s line-up: Howlin’ Rain. This psydelic rockband from San Fran sounds like a modern-day answer to classic 70s rock acts and according to our collegue gave this band on of the best perfomances during this year’s SXSW.
