- We are ending the day with 15 earthquakes. 2 of these earthquakes had a magnitude equal or greater than 2.0
- A news article from Spanish news agency EFE, published in La Información (in Spanish), states that several boats will map the ocean depths of El Hierro. Below a summary of the article translated to English:
“The government will start from March 1st a bathymetric survey program (study of the deep ocean) on the island of El Hierro in order to continue monitoring the underwater volcano. This decision was taken today at a meeting chaired by the General Director of Civil Defense and Emergencies, Juan Antonio Diaz Cruz. These actions will take place as long as the eruption continues.
A schedule for the months of March, April and May has been set, with different vessels assigned to do the bathymetry with a periodicity of about 7 to 10 days. Boats will be from the State Navy, Police, Marine Rescue Society, Ministry of Fisheries and Department of Customs.”

An LP, or event of long period, it is a harmonic moviento ie, resonance in a musical note and its harmonics, such low frequency that are not audible, but produced in volcanic conduits for fluids magma. These tubes act as the pipes of an organ. In the seismogram, are characterized by a very slow signal impairment that occurs, generating waves of various kinds. Enclosed is a summary of the most characteristic types of LPs, so they can "play" to classify and find out if indeed this is an LP (JR).

quote:Update 23/02 – 08:17 UTC - is El Hierro resembling Hawaii ?
- The earthquake activity continues as IGN listed 6 earthquakes so far today
- In our title we talk about Hawaii. Why ? Because a lot of scientists (not all of them) are convinced that both Hawaii and El Hierro are Hot Spot volcanoes, this contrary to subduction volcanoes like the Andes volcanoes (subduction means that the Oceanic plate dives below the continental plate and that part of the re-melted oceanic plate does create volcanoes by fissuring into the continental plate.
In case of Hot Spot volcanoes, we are (simplified) talking of weak points in the oceanic plates. The solid rock part of these plates (the crust) is very thin (10 to 15 km), below this thickness a variety of hotter material creates other sections (that is one of the main reasons why most of the earthquakes are occurring at a depth of 10 km or more). Magma tries to find weak areas in this material. This process can be found all over the ocean floors where hot vents and submarine volcanoes (if extinct also called seamounts) are doing exactly the same (there are thousands of them).
The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii, Hawaii (the big island) is just like El Hierro the youngest island of a volcano chain that grew above sea level. The older islands are moving away from the weakest point by the normal moving oceanic plates (10 to 100 mm per year depending on the location, which makes hundreds of km’s over millions of years). Maui, another extinct volcano island in the Hawaiian chain can be compared with La Palma, second youngest island in the Canary island chain.
The Kilauea volcano at Hawaii is constantly active since many years. Some periods are calm, but nevertheless the lava lake is partly filled and the eruption continues by channeling magma through lava tubes to the ocean. At regular times the eruption process intensifies and creates high intensity eruptions like a full crater lake, creating a stream of lava or even rift eruptions along the crater line. What El Hierro experiences at the moment is almost the same. Early November, a submarine rift eruption occurred (see video and pictures Guardia Civil / Involcan) and since many months the cone builds up by flowing lava (even today with limited HT).
Main difference with Hawaii : the depth of most of the earthquakes. The cracks in the Hawaiian crust are in average at a depth of 4 to 6 km, a lot shallower than the average El Hierro quakes.
We hope that “Wally” the ROV on board of the Atlantic Explorer will soon give us a proof of what is happening near the El Hierro main vent. If the crew of the Atlantic Explorer would succeed in delivering footage of the eruption, it would be a big blame to the other agencies working on this eruption.

quote:Scientists: El Hierro eruption process is over
Scientists have claimed that the submarine volcano eruption that commenced on the 10th October 2010 in the area of ‘Mar de Las Calmas’ located to the south of the island of El Hierro, has now finalised according to the scientific committee of Pevolca as reported in a press release today (Monday 5th March 2012). The Director General of Security and Emergency of the Canary Islands, Juan Manuel Santana, announced this statement after holding a meeting with Pevolca, whose members were unanimous on the end of the eruption process in this area.
However, Juan Manuel Santana has stated that the eruption continues to be detectable on El Hierro since the 19th July 2010, so it will continue the scientific surveillance on the island.

- The red alert in the volcanic area of El Mar de las Calmas has been lowered to Yellow Alert, pre-emergency phase. The rest of the island will continue in yellow alert.
- The exclusion of areas of Arenas Blancas, Tacorón and Playa de Los Mozos will be also relaxed once a new document is released, soon, with the details of a smaller exclusion area. For now, the 4 mile maritime exclusion will remain.
- Recommendations for not swimming, fishing and scuba-diving will remain in place until new samples from the water in the area are analysed by the public health service, which could mean also these measures to be relaxed.

quote:Undersea Eruption Emergency Ends in Spanish Island
Madrid, Mar 6 (Prensa Latina) The authorities in the Canary Islands decreed on Tuesday the end of the emergency phase in the underwater volcano eruption area started in October last year at El Hierro Island, as informed by head of the Volcano Risk Civil Protection Plan in the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA), Javier Gonzalez.
He said the red alert in La Restinga fishing town was changed to yellow (pre-emergency) now.
The decision was announced a day after the scientific committee of PEVOLCA proclaimed the end of the volcano eruption registered in Las Calmas Sea, south of El Hierro Island.
Experts consider that though there is still some seismic activity, the eruptive phenomenon has concluded, six months after its start.
According to Carmen Lopez, from the National Geography Institute, the eruption phase has ended because no evidence of gasification or emission of material to the surface has been registered, in relation to the eruptive process started in October.
"We are still registering seismic activity, an indicator that the volcanic process is still on," she added.
According to the latest data registered in the area, the main cone of the undersea eruption is 288 feet from the surface.
Since mid July, 2011, El Hierro, the smallest, least populated island of the Canaries archipelago (268 square km and more than 10,000 inhabitants), has suffered over 11,000 quakes caused by magma activity on its subsoil.
The most powerful of them, of 4.6 degrees, was registered on November 11, 2011, and was also felt in Tenerife and La Palma islands.
The Canaries autonomous community is the active area with greater seismology risk in Spain, according to the country's Geology and Mining Institute.
Four of the Caraty Islands have historic volcanoes: El Hierro, La Palma (the Teneguia volcano), Tenerife (Teide volcano) and Lanzarote (Timanfaya volcano). La Restinga's eruption has been the first in this European country since 1971, when the Teneguia volcano erupted.

- The Atlantic Explorer has been able to obtain images of the volcano! They are the first to capture the submarine volcano in ‘El Mar de las Calmas’. The crew of QSTAR along with members of ‘Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria’ and SOS Océanos worked very hard for this achievement. We should expect a detailed report tomorrow as Joke Volta reports.
[edit]quote:Update 15/03 – 22:31 UTC
- AVCAN reports that the Atlantic Explorer ROV Wally has fairly good images of the crater, gas emitting vents and even lava streaming out of the crater ! (what would e really a surprise as the PEVOLCA scientists have claimed that the eruption has ended.
- The ACN press / El Pinar webcam will end his broadcast on March 17. We have to admit that with tyhe present activity, the ACN press webcam was not important anymore as jacuzzi and stain are to faint to be seen
- Maria from SOS Oceanos wrote us in the morning that the ROV pictures will be published “when the University of Las Palmas” thinks it is opportune to do so. Well, we will have to wait then. The law of scientists and Universities is prevailing. The University of Las Palmas has chartered the Q-Star Atlantic Explorer and the ROV and keeps the images first for scientific purposes. We will bring it to you as soon as it is published.
quote:VERY IMPORTANT Update 19/03 – 17:02 UTC
- ER reader Roland (see comments) has given us the lead to a report of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria showing the still erupting submarine El Hierro volcano at a depth of 70 meter (this is 18 meter less than the last published data from the IEO High Tech bathymetry equipment!). What nobody could accomplish so far, has been done by the quite simple ROV E-Wally on board of the SOS-Oceanos, Q-Star, Atlantic Explorer ship by the scientists of the Universidad de Las Palmas the Gran Canaria.
- The images have been captured on March 14 as the date on the images reveal. The images are of course foggy as a lot of suspended material is polluting the water.
- No doubt that Q-Star and the University has also some video footage that they will probably release later on (the pictures are probably screen captures of the video).
We are however VERY PLEASED that all those who cooperated on this mission have proved :
a) that the depth of the erupting cone has decreased to 70 meter
b) that the eruptive process is not yet entirely finished (at least it was not after the date that Pevolca said that the eruption stopped).
Joke was “very excited” on March 14 after talking to the crew of the Atlantic Explorer as they stated already then that the ROV made images of glowing lava. As we could not see these images, we brought the news rather minimal.
quote:Very Important Update 26/03 -08:21 UTC
- AVCAN was the first to bring the news semi-officially, but the joint partners Cabildo de El Hierro (Mr. Alpidio Armas) and Telefonica (Movistar) have decided that the webcams are NO longer needed to show the still active Las Calmas sea.
Multi-billion Movistar gives up on El Hierro
As feared by many of our followers, Movistar telecommunications of Spain and the Cabildo of El Hierro have decided to shut down the webcam broadcast of the submarine volcano activity at La Restinga, El Hierro.
As the cost of the operations is literally “peanuts” for such a huge telecommunications company, the major part of the people following this eruption from the beginning have a hard time to understand this decision. Thousands of webcams are operated all over the world and they are just showing the weather!
As long as CAP is operating at El Hierro, a fast reactivation of the still ongoing process is possible. After many months of following operations and time needed to get it working, we are 99.5% convinced that it will be far too late to get the webcams to work again if the volcano reactivates.
As said earlier on, the cost of operating the current webcams is almost nihil ! Why ? As we have seen the last couple of weeks, maintenance is already an absolute minimum (lenses are very rarely cleaned) and the webcam zoom, angle and other settings have internet distance commands. Bandwidth is absolutely nothing for a company like Movistar.
If Movistar and the Cabildo would decide to remove the equipment (we do not know that yet), the cost would be an X-Factor more than continuing operations.
quote:Update 03/04 08:01 UTC
Is this a sign of the awakening of the volcano ? To early to tell, but what we have seen so far today is the renewed activity of the feeder area at El Golfo. 3 of the 4 earthquake epicenters are located in the El Golfo area. The strongest M2.5 quake below the (new) volcano-vent itself.
4 earthquakes since midnight, the last one being the strongest. The 2.5 earthquake will have been surely felt by islanders and brings the memories back from the multiple earthquake they have felt a couple of months ago.
Update 02/04 18:43 UTC
- A video published by IGN shows a lot of degassing effects at depth of 100 to 150 m. We believe that the video has been captured by the Salvamar during his excursions the last couple of days. The water was very clear while videotaping? We congratulate CSIC with this video.

quote:Update 19/04 – 12:09 UTC
- In a short twitter message from the Cabildo de Hierro (office of Mr. Alpidio Armas), the Green Alert of the entire island has been declared by Pevolca. Due to the very slim activity of the last couple of weeks (only faint stains and degassing), the Alert level change seems logical to Earthquake-Report.com

quote:5 small earthquakes on 12 May
Update Mon 14 May 18:42
A slight increase of seismic activity has been noted recently. On 12 May, 5 small quakes occurred in the western part of the island at depths of 2-17 km. It is unlikely that this is a precursor of a new eruptive phase, but rather reflects residual magma movements and minor tectonic adjustments at the recently emplaces dikes beneath the island.
quote:Forty years after the Teneguía Volcano (La Palma, 1971), a submarine eruption took place off the town of La Restinga, south of El Hierro, the smallest and youngest island of the Canarian Archipelago. Precursors allowed an early detection of the event and its approximate location, suggesting it was submarine. Uncertainties derived from insufficient scientific information available to the authorities during the eruption, leading to disproportionate civil protection measures, which had an impact on the islands economy based primarily on tourism, while residents experienced extra fear and distress.
quote:Earthquake swarm continues - new magmatic intrusion ?
Update Tue 05 Jun 11:13
The earthquake swarm at El Hierro volcano continues. Yesterday, a total of 16 quakes including one of magnitude 2.9 were recorded. The quakes are clustered around the 15-20 km depth beneath the El Golfo bay, where a new magmatic intrusion could be taking place. The harmonic tremor signal has risen slightly as well.
update Sun 03 Jun 16:43
After weeks of almost no activity, a small earthquake swarm has started yesterday. During the past 36 hours, 12 mostly very small quakes have occurred at depths mostly around 10-20 km in the area NW of Frontera. This possibly indicates that magma is still occasionally moving under the volcano, but unless the intensity of earthquake swarms increases a lot, it is not likely that a new eruption is in the making.
quote:More volcanic activity on El Hierro
The National Geographic Institute has reported eleven earthquakes on the island of El Hierro over the last few hours of today (Thursday 14th June 2012) with a magnitude of between 1.7 and 2.8 degrees on the Richter scale. According to their website, the IGN states that these earthquakes have been recorded to the west, southwest and northwest of the town of La Frontera at depths of between 20 to 24 kilometers.
The first of these earthquakes was recorded at 04:40 to the west of La Frontera, at around 20 kilometers depth and the last, of 2.1 magnitude, at 07:48 to the North-west of La Frontera, at a depth of 21 kilometers. The earthquake of the highest intensity, 2.8 degrees on the Richter scale, was recorded at 06:05.
It has not been reported if any of these quakes have been felt by the islands population.

quote:Update 25/06 11:12 UTC
- For those readers thinking that the current HT is an eruption, we have to deny this. This is mainly magma movement. A real eruption, like in early November, will show an almost FULL HT graph.
Since a few weeks ER is publishing a daily Volcanic Activity (Volcanic Seismicity) post (daily posts since 2 days). These posts are showing clearly what you should see when a real eruption is taking place. Example 1 Example 2 Example 3
Update 25/06 10:56 UTC
- IGN has not listed new earthquakes since 2 hours now, but is still adding ones who occurred before 09:03 UTC. Their current number is 61
- Based on the CHIE HT graph, more earthquakes are occurring since the latest M3.8 earthquake.
- HT seems to be calmed a little, but this means only that the Magma transport is probably blocked by a plug in the lava tubes system. It may take another strong quake or some time to open this.
Update 25/06 10:27 UTC
- 55 earthquakes listed so far today by IGN (in reality these are only the strongest ones bigger than 1.5). On a few exceptions all of the listed earthquakes are +M2.0. We would not be surprised that the real number of earthquakes (including the very weak ones which were included in the beginning of the eruption) would run into the hundreds (of course speculative).
- We are also convinced that if the eruption would be reactivated in the same cone at 88 meter of depth (like what happened in early November), a Surtseyan eruption will happen very rapidly. (Less than 100 meter is considered as a depth that Cypressoide action can start)
The location of the cone in the Las Calmas sea is far enough out of the coast to be considered as not dangerous for the population of the island. Only northern winds (which only happen now and then) can make a difference to that scenario.
At earthquake-report.com we think that the time has come to reinstall the WEBCAMS and to STOP PLAYING POLITICS (hiding information to the open public).
Update 25/06 10:12 UTC
- We are acquiring a Magnitude level that the main seismological agencies in the world will be picking up and reporting the El Hierro earthquakes. Mostly they start reporting from M4.0 onwards. Our own Daily complete list of earthquakes has been picking up the + M2.5 earthquakes.
- The last reported earthquake by IGN was at 09:03, but we see a number of new earthquakes since then on the HT graphs (bigger amplitude lines for some seconds).
- The current earthquake depth is not dangerous for the people on the island. BUT . if the magma finds its way up and a few extremely shallow quakes occur (less than 3 km) an eruption can occur in a short time. In many cases a M 4+ earthquake triggers the eruption when magma channels are blocked.
- We trust on IGN to follow up the depth and the most recent set of the earthquakes with their SECRET data.
Update 25/06 09:45 UTC
- Events are getting stronger and stronger. The strongest quake so far is a M3.8 at a depth of 19 km at 09:03 UTC. The earthquake was felt as an MMI IV (light shaking) at some parts of the island.
- We expect a PEVOLCA report much sooner than their proposed afternoon meeting as the strength of the quakes is getting stronger and stronger. So far the depth remains at approx. 20 km, but
- There is a tendency that the epicenter of the quakes moves gradually to the earlier Las Calmas sea area (towards the earlier eruption cone).
- If the present set of earthquakes keeps getting stronger, all options are open, but surely a new eruption is imminent.
- Of course we have to be prudent to predict what would probably comes up, but the authorities have chosen NOT to share all available data with the public. We do not know at this time how the following parameters are changing : recent GPS inflation values (horizontal and vertical), micro-earthquakes, gas emission, etc.
Update 25/06 -09:05 UTC
- The comment section was automatically closed after 270 days (yes 270 days ). ER reader Colin attracted our attention to it and it has been reopened (thanks Colin).
- PEVOLCA (committee of scientists and Safety people) will be meeting this afternoon and will be discussing the report of the IGN specialists). Until then, we do not expect any official news.
- AVCAN has mapped the quakes reported by the IGN (see below). The violet bullet the M3.4 of today, the red bullets are todays earthquakes (38), the green bullets those of yesterday (16) and the yellow bullets the 120 quakes from June 1 to June 23.
quote:Update 25/06 – 12:39 UTC
- Another strong earthquake occurred at 12:13 UTC. We do not know the location yet as it was not listed yet by IGN.
- The epicenters of the last sets of earthquakes (those listed by IGN) is gradually shifting towards the submarine Las Calmas vent.
- We consider this as the best possible scenario for a new eruption as the submarine vent is located at a safe distance out of the coast.
- So far 71 earthquakes have been listed, but there are much more earthquakes than those listed. Not only the most recent ones, but also those below M2.0 which have to be considered volcanic earthquakes too. In the initial reporting, these weaker earthquakes were also listed by IGN in a text format list, but IGN stopped publishing these (on political pressure ?)
- One particular listed earthquake attracted our attention and maybe a trace of what is coming :
The 10:25 M2.6 earthquake to the SW of El Pinar at a depth of 11 km. The shallower depth may indicate that the magma has arrived in the earlier open lava tube system below the shallow cone.
Update 25/06 – 12:01 UTC
- Another (not yet listed) strong earthquake occurred at 11:19 UTC. We expect it to be measuring in between M3.2 and M3.6
Update 25/06 – 11:42 UTC
- An M3.0 earthquake occurred out of the Tenerife coast but cannot be seen as directly related to the El Hierro activity.
- As ER is following earthquakes worldwide, we noticed some earthquake activity in the greater Azores area about 15 minutes prior to the activity of El Hierro. A direct relation is of course impossible to prove, but we simply noticed it.
quote:Update 25/06 18:12 UTC Pevolca press report (Gobierno de Canarias)
To most people, the decision of Pevolca will come as a surprise no special precautions whatsoever, not even at El Julan where most of the earthquakes are centering now.
The Pevolca decision is however motivated by the lack of deformation of the island, by the depth of the earthquakes and by the lack of gas emissions. 20 km is ok for IGN and INVOLCAN (scientific partners in Pevolca).
The press report is also stating that IGN is following up the earthquakes in Realtime (not 2 hours behind schedule like they do with the public). Lets hope IGN and PEVOLCA have taken the right decision. We have to stress that they have been always right so far.
Lets make however an important remark : the route towards the traditional submarine cone seems still to be blocked and we still have earthquake close to M3 going on. If a major M+4 occurs, all scenarios are open.
Update 25/06 18:55 UTC
- Seismicity is calming considerably the last couple of hours. It seems that the volcano has listened to the Pevolca board .
- 121 M+2 earthquakes until 17:37 UTC today (149 total M+1.4) (This does not take into account the probably hundreds of earthquakes below M1.4 which were registered in 2011, but are only visible now for the IGN and INVOLCAN volcanologists).
quote:Update 26/06 11:07 UTC
- 89 earthquakes so far today (IGN is still adding continuously).
- The location of the epicenter remains below the island and the hypocenter behave normal (18 20 km).
- The stronger earthquakes are in the M2.9 to M3.1 range. Most of the earthquakes are stronger than M2.0.
Important Update 26/06 10:30 UTC
- What looks in the seismogram as being a lot less activity than yesterday is not completely true as only the Harmonic Tremor (magma flow) has almost stopped completely. The accumulated pressure of the magma below the island is still very strong.
- Until 08:42 UTC, 77 earthquakes have been listed by IGN (M1.3 or stronger)
Joke Volta told us that she had felt the M2.9 which occurred this morning at 04:10 near El Pinar (05:10 local time). Joke lives in El Pinar. The IGN list, which is set up manually by IGN staff and is only published 2 hours after occurrence of the earthquakes, does not show a depth of this earthquake NOR does it show that this particular earthquake was felt by the people. Even more strange is that the depth of this earthquake has been plotted as EXTREMELY SHALLOW by the IGN plotted version of the quakes (see below). Why not mentioning the depth in the main list ? Are the values unsure ? The strength was strong enough to locate the depth (with an eventual error margin). We understand that a single shallow quake is not enough to be conclusive, but hiding information is from the past century.

GPS STATION PINA (El Pinar)
During the last 2 days there has been horizontal eastward displacement of 3 cm and north of 1.5 cm and a displacement in the vertical (elevation) of 3 cm.
These deformation data clearly reflect a process of movement of magma underground and the source responsible for this deformation is in the central-western part of the island of El Hierro in conjunction with data from recent seismic activity.
The movements recorded during the last 2 days are real and much faster than those observed last year 2011.
quote:Update 27/06 09:58 UTC
- Deformations, as described in the Involcan maps and report below, are generated by the Magma pressure and are one of the major indications to predict eruptions. Together with the strength of the earthquakes, the depth of the hypocenters and the emitted gases, they are used by volcanologists to send alerts and warnings to the public. The mitted gases are the uncertain factor in this case but didnt we hear a couple of months ago that some sampling points were dismantled ?
- The Involcan informative note is a real blame to the IGN and PEVOLCA communications policy. These organizations should review their communication policy urgently. We live in 2012 and when people feel the earth shaking almost constantly like in Sabinosa, you cannot get away with a message that the state of the island is normal, even if this is scientifically true. We know that we are repeating ourselves over and over again but the present situation becomes hallucinate.

Pevolca calls a Yellow alert in the unpopulated earthquake zone. In a live interview on RTVC, the local Canary Island TV and Radio station, María josé jurado has declared that the El Julan and La Dehesa area will be labeled as Yellow Alert area. The move sounds logic to ER as the direct treat to other areas for eventual earthquake damage is very limited. Earthquakes are the main risk at this moment.

Almost all the recent earthquake’s epicenters are gradually migrating south into the Las Calmas sea. The denomination ” SW FRONTERA” are gradually replaced by “W EL PINAR” when the epicenter is located in the Las Calmas sea.
The migration to the new area can also be observed in the existence of harmonic tremor which started also around 14:00 UTC.
It looks now that HT is diminishing again and that the earthquakes will remain in the same area until new HT appears (possibly started by some strong earthquakes).
quote:Update 27/06 – 19:45 UTC
The earthquakes epicenters are currently located at the same area where it all started on September 27, 2011. The depth at that time was approx. 15 to 17 km. The current depth is more in the 19 to 21 km range . The difference in between the 2 layers is a couple of kms. (All our readers can come to the same conclusion in comparing the location and the depth of the 10 days of earthquakes who started on September 27 and todays location of the quakes). All this is not conclusive in what will happen next.

quote:Update 28/06 07:55 UTC
- At least the people of El Hierro must have had a good night sleep as the strength of the earthquakes decreased seriously the last 7 hours. But only the strong earthquakes were more or less silent at night.
- So far today IGN has listed 39 earthquakes since midnight, a little less than the preceding days, but still a high number.
- Harmonic Tremor has restarted strongly since 05:35 this morning, showing us that the volcanic process is still continuing strongly. As we have experienced the last couple of days, the current HT may refer to a new migration of the epicenters
- The strongest earthquake since midnight was a M2.8 earthquake. NO earthquakes since midnight have been marked as felt by the people. At ER we think that Felt or no felt indications are far from reality as most people do not indicate slight tremors anymore after having experienced stronger ones. Aftershocks in general are less documented. Only nations like Japan, USA and New Zealand are drilled to report whatever they have felt.
- The depth did not show a lot of difference since midnight with values in between 17.6 and 22.9 km
- The epicenter of the earthquakes since midnight remains the El Julan La Dehesa area of the island
- We certainly expect more earthquakes to come today as the process continues in full strength.
- What can change the process fundamentally ? Our readers should watch the following elements in the current process with more focus than the rest : Depth of the earthquakes (changes towards a depth of 15 km or less can be triggers of new events, sudden change in the strength of the earthquakes, the locations of the epicenters (these locations are important in relation to the conduits of the recent eruption)

- The Oceanographic vessel Hesperides has been announced to arrive soon at the El Hierro waters. What the ship exactly will do is unknown (analyzing sea water looks evident to us) as the bathymetry will not have changed since the first eruption stopped a few months ago.
- Yesterday we have cut a big chunk from our main article. These parts are now saved in part 44 and 45 of the El Hierro volcano eruption history. The links to all the preceding parts can be found at the bottom of this page. We will soon cut another part of this page as it is reaching a critical size to be easily consulted by people with limited bandwidth like Colin.

- Everything looks rather normal today and people get used to the present conditions. Less strong earthquakes than yesterday bring a king of relief to the living conditions
- The process is however continuing just like the preceding days. IGN has listed 164 earthquakes so far, less than yesterday but still en enormous number.
Update 28/06 – 20:24 UTC
-Thanks to ER readers Sissel and Mafl who gave us both routing informations of the SAR aircraft and the Hesperides ship, we were able to see in the public domain the routing of both the aircraft and the ship.
Wat we earlier described as probably shipping related is not so sure anymore after gluing the 2 pictures together. It is of course normal that the authorities will not publish every move they are ordering in their research.
We also checked the NASA satellite image today, but it was to hazy to trace eventual discoloring . The common researched area is approx. 20 km to the south of La Restinga.
After some Ocean depth checking in Google earth, we found out that the submarine volcano cone were the plane and ship were circling is at a depth of 2000 meter (we know that that is not accurate, but it gives a clue of how deep we expect the volcano or seamount to be). Maybe todays flight and ship route were only meant to do some long planned research which has nothing to do with the current activity.
Update : As we were intrigued by this story, we remember an issue which occurred on October 10 2011, just before the sea at El Hierro started to color green. This is the text we wrote on October 10 (part 2 of the El Hierro story ) :
Following the Spanish Newspaper El Mundo, a small submarine eruption has taken place 7 km out of the coast. The eruption occurred at 1200 meter below sea level. The eruption took place in the Las Calmas sea to the south of the island at 10.43 local time (09:43 UTC). We expect an official statement soon.
The news comes from 4 boats presently navigating in the Las Calmas sea.
- The present conditions are however totally different than on October 10 (earthquake parameters). Another difference is that todays action took place at approx. 20 km out of the coast.

The permanent GPS network INVOLCAN instrumental movements continued to show abnormal El Hierro
These ground deformation data "not perceptible to people," confirms a rise in magmatic reactivation under the island of El Hierro
The Institute of Volcanic Islands (INVOLCAN) reports that continue to be recorded anomalous horizontal and vertical displacements in El Hierro in the Canary GPS network operated by the INVOLCAN under the direction of Dr. Takeshi Sagiya, Professor of Nagoya University and Scientific Collaborator INVOLCAN.
During the last 4 days to confirm the registration of a horizontal shift to the Northeast (4.4 cm) and as an offset in the vertical (elevation of 3 cm) in the GPS station WNBF (http://www.seis.nagoya-u.ac.jp/sagiya/canary_gps/FRON.pdf) located in the City of La Frontera and a horizontal shift to the Northeast (4.5 cm) and a shift in the vertical (elevation of 4, 5 cm) in the GPS PINA located in the City of El Pinar (http://www.seis.nagoya-u.ac.jp/sagiya/canary_gps/PINA.pdf). By contrast, in the GPS VALVE, located in the building environment of the Cabildo of El Hierro (http://www.seis.nagoya-u.ac.jp/sagiya/canary_gps/VALV.pdf), no observed shift in the vertical, but horizontal displacement to the northeast (2.6 cm) over the last 4 days.
These deformation data "not perceptible to people," confirms a process of movement of magma beneath the island of El Hierro, and the source responsible for this deformation is in the central-western part of the island of El Hierro in conjunction with the recent seismic activity data. The movements recorded during the last 4 days are real and much faster than those observed last year 2011.
From January to June 2012 were recorded displacements of less importance, but still significant, the GPS stations located in Valverde (VALVE, east), La Frontera (WNBF, shootings) in the Restinga (REST, to the southeast and elevation), El Pinar (PINA, to the east) and Sabinosa (SABI, began to move slightly to the north).
The Red Canary GPS is a network of 35 permanent geodetic instruments GPS stations whose ownership depend on different agencies and administrations but perform a joint commitment to contribute to the improvement and optimization of geodetic software for volcano monitoring in the Canary Islands and has the ability to detect any ground deformation associated with volcanic phenomena in depth. The emission of carbon dioxide that is being registered in HIE01 geochemical station, located at the intersection of the three main volcano-structural El Hierro, does not reflect outliers moving average values were recorded daily during the last 7 days of 4 grams carbon dioxide per square meter. Nor are occurring outliers emission of carbon dioxide in HIE06 geochemical station, located in the area of the volcano sumital Tanganasoga, whose record of daily moving average values over the last 7 days is 0.8 grams carbon dioxide per square meter. In both stations are not being detected geochemical emissions of hydrogen sulfide.
These results have been obtained thanks to MAKAVOL project "Capacity Building of R & D + i + d to contribute to the reduction of Volcanic Risk in Macaronesia (MAC/3/C161)" which is being co-funded by the program Transnational Cooperation European Union Madeira-Canary-Azores (MAC 2007-2013), and the collaboration of the Research Center for Seismology, Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation, University of Tokyo (Japan), GRAFCAN (Canary Islands Government) and as of the Island Councils of Tenerife and El Hierro and the municipalities of La Frontera and El Pinar.

- Deformation statistics from the University of Nagoya in cooperation with Involcan are showing a strong decrease in Ultra Rapid values in the stations of Sabinosa, Pinar, Frontera and La Restinga. The numbers are showing a reverse effect than last nights earthquakes would have assumed.
- 71 earthquakes so far today, the strongest one being a M4.2 at 2:31
- hypocenter or focal depth range remains as it was, at 18 to 21 km in average. No shallow quakes anymore.
- activity has calmed a lot the last several hours, but earthquakes still occur at normal (whats normal ?) values of M+2
- the real number of volcanic earthquakes (including the weak ones) is far greater than the 71 mentioned above. How to see that ? Take a quick look at the CHIE graph and count the vertical out-swaying lines, and thats only a portion of it!

IGN expects new strong earthquakes (up to M4.5-M4.6) for the next 7 days. This has been said at a press conference today. Pevolca does not have the intention the meet soon again if only these earthquakes are continuing as this is expected from now on. Pevolca asks the population of El Hierro to be ready for whatever eventual urgent communication which Pevolca may decide. The Grupo de Emergencias y Salvamento (GES) will be at El Hierro to reinforce the local groups, this to be prepared for whatever crisis to come.
María José Blanco (IGN) has said that an eventual eruption at the present seismic center (Las Calmas sea south of the lighthouse), where depths of the hypocenters are still measured at 20 km, can be excluded at this moment. She said that it also lasted quite some time last time before an eruption took place. The epicenters of the earthquakes had to migrate more than 20 km to the south before the magma found his way up. María José Blanco also said that an eruption on land can be excluded at the moment but that IGN follows up the situation very consciously as all the events are going much quicker than during last years eruption. (compiled by ER from a number of local press reports like Diario El Hierro)
- Already 123 earthquakes so far today

After exhaustive analysis during the last hours of GPS data, Dr. Takeshi Sagiya, Professor of Nagoya University and Scientific Collaborator INVOLCAN, informed the group that the fall INVOLCAN observed in the GPS antenna of El Hierro, also been observed in other antennas located outside the island of Meridian, which coupled with little or no variation in the horizontal component leading to suggest that the data reflected by the GPS is affected by external effects, which could be related to tropospheric interference.

A report from the GSC (Communication department of Canary Islands) has revealed that a helicopter survey unit has noticed a (small) jacuzzi and a white stain at coordinates 27º 4.573” N y 18º03.761” W in the Las Calmas sea approx. 180 meter out of the coast. The images which have been taken by the helicopter will now be analyzed by the IGN scientists. A new flight above the zone is planned for tomorrow.
- Nobody is sure at this moment whether this picture really reveals a new vent or shows just some currents. The similarity is at least what we used to see as colors and as water agitation during the 2011 eruption.
Jon Frimann (Icelandic volcanoes blog) writes an interesting comment which we share : Dike intrusions can happen with and without harmonic tremor. Dike intrusions with harmonic tremor happens mostly at places where conduct is well established. That is not the case now. So I would not trust any signs for harmonic tremors just yet. Harmonic tremor pulse might be seen few hours before the eruption starts. Given my experience and what I did see during Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption in the year 2010. Given the amount of earthquake activity. I am assuming that some of the magma has reached less depth in the crust without making many earthquakes at present time. The reason for that is magma has easier time to make the rock soft at less depth. Soft rock means few to no earthquakes. How this plays out is all big question that currently nobody has an answer to at the moment. (Thanks to Ian Carson for informing us)
- Below another picture of the detected stain and small jacuzzi (the picture above in natural colors – in the picture below we have increased contrast and sunlight) (All pictures courtesy GES).
- Why all these maps below ? : we tried to use the coordinates as given in all the media, but we could not trace the location which coincides with the picture. Finally we decided to scan the southern coast and we tried to detect the trails along the coast. Once that being done, the google maps matched with the picture.

Curious? Coincidence? Continues the trend of the mayoreas "lashes" seismic, ie, events of magnitude greater, occur with the tide in their maximum or minimum ..... The gravitational pull on the magma seems to have any effect. The luninosidad lunar (white), continues to increase, the crescent moon for "lunatics".

- After comparing new “ultra rapid” deformation data from the University of Nagoya (Japan) we can conclude that horizontal (East) and vertical deformation is increasing again at SABI, REST and FRONT, in fact all GPS stations except PINA monitored by Dr. Takeshi Sagiya. The increase is strongest in the vertical deformation.

- Joke will try to take a few some zoom pictures from the so called detected emission spot at noon.
- In the meantime, villagers are discussing the new emission location and what they can see on the pictures. Joke reports by SMS that the local fisherman do not believe in a new emission spot but are calling it a natural phenomena, ocean floor sea (sorry if this word does not exist in English as we have no other way to describe it). The phenomena is when the current are stirred over the ocean floor and are generating white foam waves at the surface.

- 18 earthquakes so far today (the smallest number since the start of the swarm on June 24)
- NO harmonic tremor detected
- El Hierro has lived a calm night with a max. earthquake of Magnitude 2.6.
- NO change in hypocenter depths
- Almost NO change in the epicenter locations (west of the lighthouse) on the exception of 1 earthquake which occurred at a depth of 19.2 km (05:41 M1.8) on the beach a few hundred meter next the location were the GES heli had spotted some activity the day before yesterday (providing that the IGN data were accurate), but there is 99% chance that this is a coincidence.
- No new deformation numbers yet
quote:Update 05/07 12:04 UTC
- The number of earthquakes is quickly running up due to the latest swarm (update 10:04)
- A lot of the earthquakes are now happening in the 16 to 18 km layer, which, if prolonged can throw another light on this eruption and, more to the east could reach the lava tubes of the 2011 eruption. The next 12 hours will certainly give us a better view.
- deformation is down in most of the stations (IGN deformation stats), Involcan numbers are unsure (when will BOTH organizations finally show faint vertical lines in order to read the date of the markings!!)

- A new Pevolca reports confirms what we have written earlier today and yesterday. Additionally IGN has reported that also the islands of Tenerife and La Palma are moving horizontally. The El Hierro activity cannot be the only reason for this horizontal deformation. IGN also sampled air and water in the earthquake epicenter area and has found no abnormal values.
quote:Update 06/07 – 22:12 UTC
- It looks like the earthquakes have calmed again during the last 45 minutes. Tonights strong earthquakes came as a surprise to many as the activity winded down since the last couple of days. The only abnormal data since yesterday was a strong vertical (upwards) deformation at FRON and REST (see our earlier updates). SABI received no new values today. These stations were from the Univ. of Nagoya, Japan.
The IGN deformations were also mixed in the vertical deformations. Some were down like HI05, but HI10 has a strong upwards deformation.
Update 06/07 – 21:57 UTC
- After analyzing the epicenters of the last several quakes, we have noticed that the epicenter is gradually migrating to the east, towards the 2011 formed crater area (see image below)
- All tonights earthquakes occurred in the las Calmas sea
- As far as we can see now (all the recent quakes have not been listed yet, the depth remains at 18 to 22 km

Richard Wilson, a geologist who is specialized in volcano seismicity and who is also the main contributor to our “(almost) daily Worldwide Volcano Acitivity report“, describes the El Hierro situation as follows:
Apparently a new round of seismicity at El Hierro (Spain) during the past 24-48 hours. This is typical of intrusive activity, but not eruptive activity. Typically eruptive seismicity is sustained and builds to a crescendo (and occurs at much shallower depth) before material is erupted at the surface. Also, the up-down-up pattern in GPS data also suggests lateral spreading and intrusion rather than an eruptive pattern, which would also build and build and build. Now, that being said, this is my interpretation, with very limited resources as far as instrumental data and does not preclude a sudden shallowing and intensification of seismicity and deformation (and,…finally eruption!). All instrumental signs of intrusive activity beneath a volcano must be watched vigilantly while they are in-progress in order to “catch” any of these “signs” of a forthcoming eruption. This has been what is so intriguing/challenging for me to watch volcanoes since I was in my 20s (I’m 52 years old now!).

Helium-3 is the main "fingerprint" that is available to detect subsurface magmatic activity in the
The Institute of Volcanic Islands (INVOLCAN) reports that higher levels of emission of helium-3 in El Hierro occurred on 16 June 2012, one week prior to this recent spike or pulse seismic-strain on the island of Meridian with more than 650 earthquakes above magnitude 2.5 in Richter scale and deformations that reflect shifts in the horizontal and vertical (elevation) of 8.5 and 8.2 cm, respectively, in one of the GPS stations INVOLCAN ( SABI and JULA) since last June 24, 2012.
Monitoring and measurement of emission levels of helium-3 is performed periodically at four observation points (groundwater) from El Hierro wells related to The Patterns, Frontera, San Simon and the gallery since it is impossible Tacorón existing technology at present for realizing a continuous record of this important parameter geochemical.
The highest levels of emission of helium-3 in El Hierro have been detected in the well of St. Simon last June 16, 2012 causing oil slicks to values of 8.5 Ra, Ra being the ratio of isotopic ratios helio-3/helio -4 in the air. This record not only confirms the process of this recent rally magmatic or seismic-strain pulse in El Hierro but also could be detected one week before commencement.
These results have been obtained through close collaboration between scientists INVOLCAN and Geochemical Research Center, University of Tokyo, where are these analytical determinations using mass spectrometers with high resolution, given the lack of this type of specific instrumentation in Spain, as well as project MAKAVOL "Capacity Building of R & D + i + d to contribute to the reduction of Volcanic Risk in Macaronesia (MAC/3/C161)" which is being co- funded transnational cooperation program of the European Union Madeira-Canary-Azores (MAC 2007-2013).
