Tao Hypah wants to go to eurovision
As a blog described, “In a day and age where the likes of Lady Gaga rules the world and acts like Tokio Hotel, Scissor Sisters and Semi Precious Weapons are suddenly the cool kids on the block, the world would seem somewhat ready for this next act I’m going to champion…his name is Tao Hypah.” Tao Hypah is young Half-Dutch and Half-Japanese singer who is a new star of eletropop. He’s trying, for the first time, to represent The Netherlands on Eurovision Song Contest and he gave JanelaESC an interview about this new experience of his career.
You are a young artist, but how did you start to work with music?
From a very young age my whole life has been all about music. I grew up in a very creative family where music is as important as eating and sleeping. Even though I never believed I could actually sing, I used to take my little Casio piano and hide in my room to make my own music and sing to it. I’ve never wanted to do anything else, and I was probably 10 or 11 years old when it became clear to me that music would be my life.
Some blogs pointed you as one of the next big music stars, JanelaEsc also believe in your potencial, how do you feel about that?
I’m really grateful for all the positive feedback. To make it as an artist in the music business you really have to work hard, so to get that recognition means a lot to me.
There’s no better feeling for an artist than to get that enthusiasm and appreciation, that’s what it’s all about. The support and positive feedback mean that all the effort has been worthwhile.
What’s your music background – favorite artists, inspirations and such?
I was raised on a lot of musical influences. Most of it being pop, soul, R&B. Maybe it’s a bit unexpected for somebody of my age, but my biggest inspiration is Patti LaBelle. She’s such a powerful and inspiring woman. She’s the number one diva with a voice to match. Of course our king of pop Michael Jackson has been a big inspiration too. He set such high standards for every pop artist. Other artists I like are Ayumi Hamasaki from Japan, Elton John, Anastacia, I also like Rosalia de Souza, my mom is a big fan of hers, so there is ocassionally even a bit of a Brazilian music on my iPod as well!
How can you describe your music style?
The music I make is a mix of genres, but it’s mostly pop mixed with dance and RnB influences.
Eurovision isn’t popular in The Netherlands as it used to be. What’s your opinion about the contest nowadays?
The Eurovision has become less popular in the Netherlands probably because no matter what kind of singers or songs we send, we always end up at the bottom, so the enthusiasm has gone down a bit. The Netherlands is trying its best to become more successful in the contest, our artists always put on a good show, so maybe we just need one lucky break.
The Netherlands haven’t been doing well in Eurovision. What’s necessary to them to change this scenario?
That’s a hard question because I’m not sure if the Eurovision nowadays is only about the music. That said, I think the way forward is to step out of our comfort zone and be more challenging and contemporary and to offer something that will appeal not only to the Dutch public but can work internationally.
Why did you decide to take part of Nationaal Songfestival? Can you tell us something about the song?
When I heard there was an open call I decided to go for it because the whole new system sounds very motivating to an up-and-coming artist like myself. It gives everyone a chance to reach a huge international audience, but you have to have something to offer. So it’s definitely a challenge.
Tell us a bit about your preparation to the preselection. How is it going?
I perform every week at the biggest entertainment park in Holland, the Efteling, so I’m quite comfortable on stage, performing, entertaining the audience, developing my skills as a singer and performer. I think the song we sent in is really strong, with a big, uplifting, sing-along chorus, but it also has a lot of edge. It’s a type of song that is well-suited for an exciting, eye-catching stage production. Now I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that the judges like it as much as I do.
Did you watch Eurovision this year? Tell us what you think about the prodution, songs, results and personal favorites.
I watched it and I think Germany did an amazing job, their stage production was amazing. It was truly mindblowing and a pleasure to watch. My favourite song was by the Irish twins Jedward, “Lipstick”. It’s insanely catchy and a lot of fun. I also liked the Danish entry, A Friend In London, Blue from the UK but I also think Ell & Nikki were worthy winners.
What are your plans beside the dutch Eurovision selection?
I’m really busy writing and recording new songs and there’s going to be a lot happening this and especially next year in terms of releases and gigs. I’ve been working with some great production teams in Holland, Germany and the UK, so there will be a lot of new music coming soon. I hope it will lead to more performances and who knows, maybe one day soon I will even have the opportunity to perform in Brazil!

Dit klinkt inderdaad veelbelovend! Het is niet helemaal mijn smaak, maar het is hedendaags, er kan een goede show omheen worden gebouwd en hij is een opvallend type.
Echter als het waar is dat het lied begin dit jaar al op internet heeft gestaan, gaat dit hem dus sowieso niet worden

Als dit inderdaad het nummer is, dan vind ik het de beste inzending die ik tot nu toe gehoord heb. Het is fris en modern, en de zanger is een interessante verschijning. Het nummer blijft net even beter hangen dat "Drug of Oblivion" van Brandi, die in dezelfde vijver vist qua genre. De referenties naar het opsnuiven van coke komen waarschijnlijk niet door de ballotagecommissie van het ESF en het nummer is ook wat te lang, dus er moet nog wel wat gesleuteld worden.
Grazz, twitter hem anders even vanaf de ESF account, of Celeb idd het nummer is dat hij ingezonden heeft. En als hij dat dan wederom beaamt, vragen wat er van waar is dat het nr al eerder op internet heeft gestaan

Die gast is ook lekker vaag... Het zal waarschijnlijk nog even een groot mysterie blijven welk nummer hij nou in de koffer heeft geflikkerd, erin heeft laten flikkeren of wat hij erin geflikkerd had willen hebben

Ik snap er ook niet veel van, maar vind beide nummers goed klinken. Play the girl is erg kort om te beoordelen, maar oh...dat fragment klinkt als een hit! Als hij live ook goed is en ook nog eens goed kan bewegen dan kunnen we wel eens zeer hoog eindigen Nu eerst maar hopen dat dit nr is ingezonden en dat ie geselecteerd zal worden.
@Knutknuttsson: Voor zover ik weet is hij niet bekend. Maar dat maakt natuurlijk ook niet uit. Al kan hij wel een kleine achterstand hebben t.o.v. bijvoorbeeld LA the voices, die veel fans hebben en ongetwijfeld zullen stemmen.

Tao: I’m Tao Hypah 21 years old, born to a Dutch mother and Asian father and raised in Holland. I grew up in a very musical and creative family, which is where my passion for making music comes from. At the moment I’m working with different producers from Vietnam, Germany, England and, of course, Holland.
ASFE: Tell us something unexpected about yourself! We all have our unexpected quirks, what’s yours?
Tao: I sleep naked. Not sure if that’s a quirk!
ASFE: Can you describe what your song ‘Play The Girl’ is all about? What would it mean for you and the song to represent The Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest?
Tao: For me ‘Play The Girl’ is about crossing your own boundaries. The lyrics may sound controversial to some but I know everyone has that moment in life that you just want to flick the switch in your head and let yourself go. That’s the message of ‘Play The Girl’. It’s about being free. It’s actually about what life is about. There are more sides to us than we even realise and they deserve to be put in a song!
To be given the chance to represent The Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest would be amazing. Talking about crossing boundaries! I would be very honoured and do my best to deliver a great performance.
ASFE: ‘Play The Girl’ is one of the favourites to make it to the televised rounds with lots of support from the Eurofans. How does it feel knowing you’ve gathered all this support? Were you expecting it?
Tao: I had no expectations at all. I just thought it would be a great adventure that I should be a part of, so I decided to give it a go. I’m very happy about and humbled by all the positive reactions. The support I’ve been getting from people who’ve heard the song has already made it all worth while.
ASFE: We know the Eurovision Song Contest isn’t exactly viewed as the ‘coolest’ in The Netherlands. What do you plan on doing to change this perception?
Tao: I don’t know if I can change this perception on my own but all I can do is be myself and do what I love most. I do know that Eurovision Song Contest can be a whole lot of fun, so the doubters should just give it a fair chance and enjoy it for what it is – a great, colourful, fun Saturday evening TV show.
ASFE: What are some of your favorite Eurovision Song Contest entries and moments?
Tao: I loved the last year’s performance by the Irish twins Jedward! So over the top, supercamp and their song ‘Lipstick’ was really good, really catchy. I thought it deserved to become an international hit. I liked Jedward’s fun factor, not taking themselves too seriously. And, their stage production was really cool!
ASFE: Over here, we organize massive Eurovision parties on the night of the Grand Final, complete with culinary delicacies from each of the participating countries. Should you go on to represent The Netherlands, can you suggest some of your favorite Dutch dishes that the fans can prepare in your honor?
Tao: We have really nice cookies called ” Stroopwafels” or,in English, treacle waffles. For those not familiar with this delicacy, it’s a waffle made from two thin layers of baked butter with caramel syrup filling in the middle. I love fish too, so I also recommend a raw dish we call “Haring” fresh herring with onions.
ASFE: What’s next in store for Tao Hypah? Will we get to hear more music? Is there an album on the way?
Tao: There is so much going on at the moment. We’re doing a brand new radio edit of ‘Play The Girl’ which I’m very excited about. There’s possibly going to be a video for it too, and I’m currently in the studio recording vocals for 3 new songs, which will be on my album. We’re now talking to several record labels, so I think 2012 will be an exciting year.
ASFE: And finally, what message would you like to give our readers and the Eurofans?
Tao: I’ll keep it simple – have fun, enjoy your life, be free, be who you are. Love and respect. That’s all that matters. And as for Eurovision – it’s such a guilty pleasure and I can’t wait for the next one, whether as a contestant or a fan watching it on TV. Both ways, it will be fun!

Volgens mij zijn overal de inzendtermijnen gesloten behalve in Georgië. Maar of die buitenlanders accepteren...quote:

Van die landen lijkt mij alleen San Marino een mogelijke optie. Maar dan moet Tao wel een zak geld meebrengen naar Apennijnen.
Of Roemenië, maar ik denk dat zij zelf genoeg geïnteresseerde zangers hebben.
