Police have arrested protesters attempting to occupy a US Senate building, as activists influenced by the "Occupy Wall Street" movement continue to rally in the nation's capital.
Nearly 100 protesters on Tuesday morning marched onto Capitol Hill, the site of the Capitol building, and flooded the Hart Senate Office Building, where they unveiled two banners that read: "End War Now" and "People for the People".
Protesters said that they wanted to shut down Congress until the Senate agreed to hear their demands.
While most of the protesters congregated in the building's atrium, witnesses said that others stood on the buildings balconies chanting and waving banners.
Police moved quickly to disband the protest - arresting six participants and charging them with unlawful conduct.
The Capitol Hill protest was organised by the October 2011/Stop the Machine movement, an offshoot of the larger Occupy DC rally camped mere blocks from the White House and Capitol Hill.
The same group shut down Washington's National Air and Space Museum on Saturday, when they swarmed the building in protest of a new exhibit on military drones.
According to Stop the Machine's website, the movement is dedicated to "nonviolent resistance similar to the Arab Spring and the Midwest awakening" and has tasked itself with "ending concentrated corporate power and taking direct control of a real participatory democracy".

CEO Dexia logeert al drie jaar in Brussels tophotel
Sinds de Fransman Pierre Mariani in 2008 CEO werd van Dexia, woont hij in het Brusselse hotel Amigo. Kostprijs per nacht: 545 euro.
'Een appartement huren in de schaduw van de hoofdzetel was voor Mariani geen optie, het prestige van Amigo wel', zo schrijft de Belgische krant Het Laatste Nieuws.
In 2008, bij zijn aanstelling tot gedelegeerd bestuurder van de toen nog Frans-Belgische bank en verzekeraar, verhuisde Mariani naar Brussel, waar het hoofdkantoor van Dexia is gevestigd.
Om niet telkens te moeten pendelen tussen België en Frankrijk werd Mariani een appartement aangeraden in Brussel. De CEO koos niet voor een appartement, maar voor de vijf sterren van Hotel Amigo.
'Geen probleem'
Luc Soete van de christelijke bediendevakbond LBC: 'Na de crisis van 2008 heb ik Mariani geïnterpelleerd over zijn verblijfplaats in Brussel. Om hem er op te wijzen dat besparingen bij het personeel ook doorgevoerd moesten worden aan de top. Mariani verzekerde ons dat er geen probleem was. Er was over alles nagedacht, de hotelprijs lag volgens hem niet hoog. Althans niet overdreven veel hoger dan de prijs die wij betalen bij een bedrijfsbezoek aan de kantoren in Parijs. Zo'n 150 euro per nacht.'
Mariani slaapt in Brussel evenwel in de junior suite en betaalt veel meer dan 150 euro. Aan de bijzonder luxueuze kamer hangt een prijskaartje van 1000 euro per nacht. Dexia zelf betaalt niet het hele bedrag, maar iets meer dan de helft: 545 euro.
Hoeveel dagen per jaar Mariani precies verblijft in Brussel is niet bekend. Maar zelfs al is dat amper 100 dagen, dan nog bedraagt de kostprijs na 3 jaar al snel meer dan 160.000 euro. (Redactie)

Je ziet dat de toon van CNN en (vooral) Fox al veel minder smalend is. The powers that be zoeken een manier om deze nieuwe, onbekende krachten te accommoderen...quote:

Het is natuurlijk een beproefde methode iets als links of rechts te bestempelen. Je splitst de bevolking in één keer in twee en zowel de politieke trekpoppen ter linker- als rechterzijde kunnen de situatie uitbuiten. Als een dreiging of iets wat sympathie verdient, iets waar men zich voor wil inzetten. (right)
Het zal moeilijk zijn om het links/rechts paradigma te overkomen maar het collectief bewustzijn is er langzamerhand rijp voor denk ik. En dan.. wordt het pas echt interessant!

Zeer terecht artikel, maar wat mij betreft alleen wat ethiek op medisch en technologisch vlak aangaat. Het gehuil over gevaar of economische kosten wanneer men het heeft over bijvoorbeeld ruimtevaart irriteert me mateloos.quote:

- Carry purses close to the body.
- Wallets and cash are best kept in a front pocket.
- Avoid wearing Bank ID or logo items outside the bank if possible.
- Keep your cell phone charged and close at hand.
- Have emergency contact information pre-programmed into your phone.
- Have your keys out and ready before you need them.
- If you feel that you're in danger or if you observe suspicious or illegal activities, call the police or dial 911.
- If confronted or attacked, try to remain calm and cooperate by following the attacker's instructions.
- Do not attempt to reason or argue with the protesters.
- Cooperate and do not risk your personal safety.
- Be a good witness and try to remember as many details of what occurred as you can.

Pepper-Sprayed Protester Wants "Tony Baloney" To Be Charged With Assault
One of the women pepper-sprayed by the police officer Anthony Bologna now wants the high-ranking "white shirt" to be charged with assault. Kaylee Dedrick, who was seemingly cooperating with police who put her into a kettling pen during an Occupy Wall Street march on September 24, only to be pepper-sprayed by Bologna, has “suffered serious physical pain as a result of this attack," according to a letter from her lawyer, Ron Kuby, to Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance.
According to Metropolis, "Dedrick was not arrested in the incident, her lawyer wrote. Under the New York Police Department’s Patrol Guide, Kuby noted in the letter, pepper spray may be used in 'non-arrest situations only to subdue an emotionally disturbed person or against a dangerous animal.' Kuby wrote, "Department Spokesperson Paul Browne stated publicly that the pepper-spraying was justified as part of 'a continuum of force that obviated the use of batons.' This suggests that my client should be grateful that she was not beaten to the ground with police clubs, but it does not explain why D.I. Bologna discharged his pepper spray."
Kuby also said, "It is now seventeen days since D.I. Bologna discharged the spray felt ’round the world.’ While there are published accounts that you are conducting an investigation, you have not attempted to interview my client or obtain her medical records, nor have you informed her as to the progress of your investigation... It is time that D.I. Bologna stop relying on tax-payer supplied spokespeople and tell his story in the same venue given to regular citizens -- at trial."
Bologna, who has been receiving death threats and had his identity revealed by Anonymous, was also caught on tape pepper-spraying other police officers and a photographer.

Ik vind dit nogal een bekrompen redenatie. We hebben hier inderdaad nog niet alles gezien, maar het is nogal riskant om hier te blijven zitten terwijl de kans op massauitroeiïng niet heel gering is. Als je als soort wilt blijven voortbestaan moet je wel werken aan het verbreden van je horizon. Daarnaast is ruimtevaart eens te meer een goede proeftuin voor technologieën gebleken die we ook hier toe kunnen passen.quote:

Ik ben een beter en gelukkiger mens geworden door de ruimtevaart... Hoezo? Nou hierom:quote:

Door dit soort foto's van de Hubble realiseer ik me hoe mooi de wereld is waarin ik leef. Door de ruimtevaart heb ik nederigheid geleerd. Ik besef me hoe klein en onbelangrijk ik ben. Het zet me op mijn plaats. Helaas helaas zijn veel van mijn medemensen te arrogant en onwetend om in te zien hoe belangrijk de foto's van de Hubble en onze ruimtereizen eigenlijk zijn....
