Libyan rebels in Misrata said on Thursday night that they are in discussions with France to supply weapons and ammunition to fighters in the besieged coastal enclave.

The frontlines have remained in stalemate for more than a month, with the city enduring nightly bombardments from rockets, and rebel fighters saying they lack the heavy weapons to break the ring of government forces around the city.

"We are in discussion with France to supply us with the guns," said rebel military spokesman Ibrahim Betalmal. "We are trying to do our best to get ammunition and guns from France and inshallah [God willing] we are going to get those guns. These are negotiations with France, not with Nato."

The news comes after reports from Paris said France airdropped weapons and ammunition to rebel forces battling pro-Gaddafi forces in the western mountains who are pushing towards Tripoli from the Tunisian border.

Rebels in Misrata say their efforts to expand the pocket around the battered city are frustrated because of a lack of artillery, mortars and tanks. For the past four weeks successive rebel offensives pushing west towards Tripoli have been turned back by pro-Gaddafi forces dug in around the town of Zlitan.

Nato has stepped up air strikes against government positions in the past two weeks and has used warships for shore bombardment, but they have not been coordinated with rebel troop movements.

Betalmal said negotiations were being handled by the rebel government, the National Transitional Council, and refused to speculate on what kind of weapons might be offered or when they might arrive. The UN has imposed an arms embargo on Libya and Nato warships patrol the coastline to intercept ships suspected of bringing weapons to either government or rebel forces.

"We notice that Nato over the past two weeks has increased air strikes for which we are grateful," said Betalmal.

Libya's opposition leader had earlier on Thursday said that rebels needed more weapons and funding, as China and Russia raised concerns over revelations that France had supplied arms.

Mahmoud Jibril, of the Transitional National Council, said foreign deliveries of military hardware would give the rebels a chance to "decide this battle quickly [and] to spill as little blood as possible".

French military spokesman Colonel Thierry Burkhard said on Wednesday that France had airlifted weapons to Libyan civilians in a mountain region south of Tripoli. The deliveries of guns, rocket-propelled grenades and munitions took place in early June in the western Nafusa mountains, when Gaddafi's troops had encircled civilians.

Gaddafi's prime minister Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi predicted that France "will suffer for this", saying that the weapons could end up in the hands of terrorists.

"Many more French citizens will die because of these acts," al-Mahmoudi told a small group of reporters in Tripoli, according to a partial transcript of his remarks obtained by the Associated Press.

De 25-jarige Aisha Kadhafi vertelde de Franse televisie op donderdag dat haar vader, die door het Internationale Gerechtshof wordt gezocht, als een gids is voor de Libische bevolking en geen reden ziet om het land te verlaten. Vanuit een hotel in Tripoli zegt ze dat het bloedvergieten moet ophouden en dat momenteel met de oppositie wordt overlegd hoe dit te bewerkstelligen. 'We zijn klaar om met de duivel, de gewapende rebellen dus, te overleggen'.

Arrestatiebevel
De oppositie, die vanuit Benghazi opereeert, heeft woensdag uitgesloten nog in contact te zijn met Tripoli nu het arrestatiebevel tegen Kadhafi en zijn zoon Saif al-Islam van kracht is. Dat kondigde de woordvoerder van de rebellen, Mahmoud Shammam, aan.

Volgens Aisha Gaddafi zal haar vader hoe dan ook niet vertrekken. 'Dit is zijn land, dit zijn zijn mensen', zei ze tegen de Franse televisiezender.

Leden van de Veiligheidsraad van de Verenigde Naties en de NAVO waren geïnformeerd over de Franse plannen wapens aan de rebellen in Libië te leveren. Dat heeft de Franse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Alain Juppé, vandaag gezegd tijdens een bezoek aan Moskou.

Volgens Juppé handelde Frankrijk in lijn met resolutie 1973 van de VN-Veiligheidsraad. Die resolutie rechtvaardigt 'alle noodzakelijke maatregelen' om de burgers van Libië te beschermen. Resolutie 1970 verbiedt de levering van wapens aan Libië. Juppé stelt dat Parijs heeft gehandeld op basis van een interpretatie van de twee resoluties samen.

Een Franse legerwoordvoerder liet eergisteren weten dat Frankrijk rebellen in het West-Libische berggebied Nafusa van geweren voorziet. De eerste levering is eerder deze maand per parachute afgeworpen in de streek ten zuiden van Tripoli. De regio Nafusa is het leefgebied van Berberstammen die tegen de Libische leider Muamma Kaddafi in opstand zijn gekomen.

Moammar Gaddafi heeft vanavond in een toespraak gedreigd terug te slaan “in Europa” als de NAVO-aanvallen op Libisch grondgebied niet stoppen. De woorden werden afgespeeld via een audio-installatie ten overstaan van duizenden aanhangers op het centrale plein in de hoofdstad Tripoli, meldt persbureau AP.

Gaddafi dreigde dat als de aanvallen niet stoppen, “we kunnen besluiten om jullie op een zelfde manier te behandelen.” Hij zei dat “als we daartoe besluiten, we het gevecht ook naar Europa kunnen brengen.” Het was een van de grootste pro-Gaddafi demonstraties in de afgelopen weken.

De NAVO voert sinds maart bombardementen uit op militaire doelen in Libië om omverwerping van het regime van Gaddafi te bewerkstelligen.

Libische rebellen die waren opgerukt tot circa 80 kilometer van de hoofdstad Tripoli, hebben zich vandaag teruggetrokken. Ze kwamen onder een spervuur van raketten van aanhangers van de Libische leider Muammar Kaddafi.

De rebellen hadden vijf dagen geleden de stad Bir al-Ghanam bereikt. Dat wekte de indruk dat er een doorbraak nabij was in de maandenlange patstelling tussen de rebellen en het leger van Kaddafi. De rebellen krijgen luchtsteun en munitie van NAVO-landen.

The son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has claimed that Nato has offered the regime an "under the table" deal that would see the international arrest warrants against both men dropped.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi vehemently denied that he or his father ordered the killing of civilian protesters, as charged this week by the international criminal court (ICC).

In his first interview since the charges were brought, Saif alleged that western powers had proposed sacrificing the independence of the ICC to negotiate an end to Libya's civil war.

"It's a fake court," he told Russian news channel RT in an interview released on Friday. "Under the table they are trying to negotiate with us a deal: 'If you accept this deal, we will take care of the court.' What does it mean? It means the court is controlled by those countries which are attacking us every day. It is just to put a psychological and political pressure on us."

Documents from the ICC outline multiple incidents in which the tribunal prosecutors allege government troops fired on civilian protesters during anti-Gaddafi street demonstrations earlier this year.

Saif, 38, wearing a thick beard, insisted that neither he nor his father were responsible. "This court is a Mickey Mouse court," he said. "Come on, they accuse me of killing people. Everybody knows, even the rebels themselves, they can't accuse me of using force because I'm not in the army, I'm not in the government, so for me to be responsible for killing people, it was a big joke.

"Second joke – the people who died at the beginning, 159 – most of the people died when they attacked a military site and this would happen anywhere in the world – in Russia, in America, in France, in Germany and Italy. If people in the street move towards a military site trying to steal ammunition or arms, the military will prevent that, and this is what happened in Benghazi."

On Monday, the tribunal at The Hague issued arrest warrants against Gaddafi, Saif and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanoussi. The three are accused of orchestrating the killing, injuring, arrest and imprisonment of hundreds of civilians during the first 12 days of the uprising and for trying to cover up their alleged crimes.

Asked by the Russian state-funded network who did order the brutal crackdown, Saif replied: "Nobody ordered, nobody. The guards fired – that's it. The guards were surprised by the attack of the people and they started firing. They don't need an order to defend themselves and to defend their barracks and their camps."

Saif, who studied at the London School of Economics, had once been viewed as a reformer by the west and was being groomed as a possible successor to his father.

He accused Nato and the rebels of being in a "hurry" to finish the conflict, and warned that the government is ready to wait them out.

"They want to finish as soon as possible because they are hungry, they are tired, they want to share the cake," he said. "For them Libya is like fast food, like McDonald's, fast. Because everything should be fast: fast war, fast airplanes, fast bullets, fast victory.

"But we are very patient because we are in our country. We live here, we die here, so we are very patient. We may win tomorrow, in one week or in one year, but one day we'll win. One day the French will go back to Corsica in France, the Italians will go back to Sicily in Italy, the Danish will go back to Denmark, the Canadians will go back to Toronto and Libya will go back to the Libyans."

Saif's reaction to the ICC charges was dismissed by underground activists in Tripoli. A man using the name Niz, who belongs to a group known as the Free Generation Movement, said: "There is no one who does anything without the desire and wish of Colonel Gaddafi. Any atrocity in the last five months or in the last 42 years is directly associated with an order issued in one way or another by Colonel Gaddafi."

On Friday, rebels were pulling back from their positions outside the strategic town of Bir al-Ghanam, 50 miles south of Tripoli, after coming under rocket attack, Reuters reported.

A rebel spokesman, Gomaa Ibrahim, said a colonel in Gaddafi's army had defected to the rebel side. The officer, Mohammed al-Rajbani, had served as a local commander in the Libyan military and recently joined rebels in Libya's western mountains, Ibrahim told the Associated Press.

In Tripoli, several hundred government supporters, including families with children, gathered in the capital's Green Square. Some held aloft green banners, signaling support for the regime. Earlier this week, Libyan state TV had called for a "million man march".

Ik stem voor een kort-durende invasie, gelegitimeerd onder Artikel 51 van het VN handvest, om hem van zijn zetel te verwijderen.

Nu het legaal is kunnen we het maar beter doen ook. Gaat sneller dan wat er nu gebeurd.
