The teams and their sponsors have now been able to put together a package for Howard to contest the double-header event at Texas as well.

The Motegi event had always taken place on the egg-shaped oval version of the track since the series made its debut there in 2003.

However, with the damage sustained during the March earthquakes, IndyCar has announced that the race will instead take place in the 2.98-mile road course.

The event, scheduled for September 18, will be the last one at Motegi, which will not return to the calendar next year.

IndyCar has confirmed that it will hear protests next week filed by Newman/Haas and Ganassi following Ryan Hunter-Reay's controversial victory in the Indy 225 at New Hampshire last weekend.

Oriol Servia and Scott Dixon both passed erstwhile leader Hunter-Reay on the final restart of the rain-interrupted event, only for the race to go back immediately back to yellow as several cars lost purchase on the cold and damp surface. It was never restarted.

The result of the race was then declared on the basis of positions held prior to the final restart.

IndyCar, the IndyCar Series' governing body, said in a statement that the hearing will take place at Indianapolis on August 22, after both teams filed an official protest no less than 30 minutes after the race was halted.

"Andretti Autosport has been invited to participate in the hearing because of its #28 car's interest in the outcome of the protests," the statement added.

Tung maakte tijdens de trainingen voor de Indy 500 indruk door, als een coureur die nog nooit eerder op ovals had gereden, direct snel te zijn en daarbij teamgenoot Scott Speed ver achter zich liet. Een kwalificatierun, waarvan de eerste rondetijden ruim voldoende zouden zijn om de grid te halen, eindigde uiteindelijk in de muur, waarna het Indy avontuur voor de 28-jarige coureur direct voorbij was.

Diese Pressekonferenz ist für den Mittwoch, den 24. August vorgesehen. Aber: Weder von JR Motorsports, noch von Stewart/Haas-Racing gibt es dazu einen offiziellen Kommentar. Auch die Frage, ob Patrick in der kommenden Saison trotzdem am Indy 500 teilnehmen wird, scheint noch nicht endgültig geklärt zu sein.

Treffen diese Informationen zu, so ist das mit großem Abstand hartnäckigste Wechselgerücht im US-Motorsport, das die Öffentlichkeit über viele Monate beschäftigte, vom Tisch. Zuletzt ging selbst die IndyCar-Spitze nicht mehr davon aus, dass man das größte Zugpferd der Serie behalten könne. Die NASCAR hat ab 2012 hingegen eine Attraktion mehr.

Net als tijdens de vrije training van vrijdag, zal opnieuw Simon Pagenaud de #78 bolide van HVM Racing besturen. Simona de Silvestro zit nog steeds in Zwitserland, nadat ze eerder deze week niet toegelaten werd in de Verenigde Staten. Door gerechtelijke stappen die nu ondernomen worden, zou het inmiddels zelfs de vraag worden of de Zwitserse volgende week wel de race in Baltimore zou kunnen rijden.

De Silvestro werd eerder deze week in New York niet door de douanebeambte tot de Verenigde Staten toegelaten, omdat hij niet zou hebben geloofd dat de 22-jarige rijdster daadwerkelijk een IndyCar coureur was.

De verwachting is dat Pagenaud ook de race van zondag zal rijden.

SONOMA, Calif. -- Tony Kanaan has signed a contract to return to KV Racing Technology, team owner Jimmy Vasser said from Infineon Raceway, site of today’s Izod IndyCar Series race.

Kanaan came to the Indianapolis-based team this year after parting ways with Andretti Autosport and failing to secure sponsorship with De Ferran Dragon Racing, which split up as a result.

The 36-year-old Brazilian is fifth in the point standings heading to today’s Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma (4:45 p.m. Eastern, Versus).

Kanaan has won 14 IndyCar races and the 2004 season title in his career. He became Michael Andretti’s replacement when the second-generation driver retired from driving.

Dennis Reinbold isn’t sure what infuriates most: having his driver penalized for blocking or having to find out about it on television.

“The whole thing was laughable but I’m mad as hell and I can’t sit back and not defend my driver and my team,” said Reinbold on Tuesday, referring to Giorgio Pantano being dropped from sixth to 17th by chief steward Brian Barnhart but only learning of the penalty while being interviewed on VERSUS.

“I don’t like getting screwed.”

Pantano, subbing for the injured Justin Wilson, was called for blocking Sebastian Bourdais on the final turn of the last lap of Sunday’s Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Evidently, since nothing was ever officially released on paper by INDYCAR, Barnhart ruled that Pantano had used the inside line to keep Bourdais behind him.

“The issue was entry to Turn 11 and I’ve watched the replay several times and Giorgio went towards the middle of the track but never crossed that imaginary line in the middle and Sebastian elected to go to the outside.

“Giorgio never got on the inner half of the track entering the turn and it was a terrible call.”

Some 20 minutes after the race, Pantano was approached for an interview by Kevin Lee of VERSUS.

“Kevin told Giorgio he’d been dropped back to 17th place and he thought it was a joke,” continued Reinbold. “Nobody had said a word to us so Larry Curry (team manager) and myself went down to the INDYCAR trailer.

“Brian wasn’t back yet but Al Unser Jr. told us just to wait until we saw the tape. Then I got pretty heated.”

Pantano was incredulous at the ruling.

“He said, ‘You are telling me I cannot go to the inside of the track on a right hand corner?” relayed Reinbold. “I’d never give somebody the inside, this is road racing.”

Reinbold was also miffed at the placing of a lapped car directly in front of Pantano.

“They put Bourdais’ teammate (James Jakes) right in front of us with six laps to go on the restart. They moved him away from the leaders for the good of the show but we were running sixth, why not give us a chance to win the race as well?

“He (Jakes) should have been behind the last car on the lead lap but instead he was blocking Pantano and nothing happened. They said he got the blue flag and I said they could stick all those blue flags in the trash can because nobody pays attention to them.”

With Ana Beatriz having her finest run to date (she qualified 10th) and Pantano charging from 11th to sixth, it was looking like a good weekend for Robbie Buhl and Reinbold.

“I don’t feel like we got a good explanation of the penalty and I’m still pissed,” said Reinbold, who has yet to speak directly with Barnhart. “Our team worked hard all weekend and what was our reward? A bad call.

“I think Brian makes the right decisions most of the time, but this time it hurt my team and that’s hard to take. I’ve said my piece and it’s time to move on.”

2004 Indianapolis 500 champion Buddy Rice will contest the final two rounds of the 2011 IndyCar season at Kentucky and Las Vegas.

Rice ended a two-year IndyCar hiatus when he joined Panther Racing for the 100th running of the Indy 500 this year, and he will join up with the team again for the final two events alongside rookie points leader JR Hildebrand.

Las Vegas will also mark Rice's 100th IndyCar start. In the 98 races he has thus far contested, he has racked up three wins, five poles and eight podiums.
