This all started last week...
I was in my dorm having dinner with my friend. All of a sudden we hear a knock at the door so I answer it. It's the RA and RD asking for me. They said they were told they need to check up on me. I asked why, and they said they don't know, but they've been given the task to check up on me every day. I told them I won't be around and not to waste their time.
Yesterday, I got a letter saying I needed to go the dean's office at a scheduled time (today). The letter had no information about what the topic would be about, but that the dean would address an "ongoing concern". Obviously, I called the provided number and demanded that I be told what we will discuss. The lady said, "Sorry, this information is confidential and I'm leaving for the night."
I then printed out the letter and took it to the head of the RA/RDs and asked if the concerns were related. She said no, but that was suspicious.
Today, I called exactly when the dean's office opened and again asked for more info. I said, "Before I can go to this meeting, I must know what will be discussed, who will be there, and what I am accused of, or else my counsel has adviced me that I cannot speak." Again, the lady refused to give me information but told me if I don't show up, this problem will result in disciplinary action.
I go to the dean's office, and I'm told to meet with some "dean of student affairs"...
Here is part of our convo that I remember:
Her: Hello, before I tell you why you're here, I want to introduce myself. Is this okay?
Me: I want counsel.
Her: Why?
Me: I have the right to counsel if I'm being accused of something.
Her: No one has accused you of anything--yet.
Me: Then why am I here?
Her: You're here because there is a concern about you. Let me tell you about myself. I am the dean of (blahblahblah). Tell me about yourself. How are you doing in school?
Me: Dean's list.
Her: How is your home life?
Me: Great.
Her: Do you know why you're here?
Me: That's what I keep asking you. You tell me.
Her: Someone is concerned about you. They think you may be depressed, overworked, or suicidal. Are you any of these?
Me: No.
Her: You are very tense and are giving short answers. You're being defensive. Are you hiding anything?
Me: No, but I am defending myself.
Her: Tell me about your home-life. What do your parents do?
Me: None of your business.
Her: Okay. How is your relationship with your parents?
Me: I said, great. We talk every day. I love them.
Her: Are they supporting?
Me: Yes, they're encouraging.
Her: What else?
Me: Are we playing a definition game?
Her: Do they pressure you?
Me: No.
Her: What are you studying?
Me: Economics.
Her: Oooh, wow! That's really hard! And you're on the dean's list! I remember I majored in econ in college, and it was very hard. There were times when I was stressed out and wanted to just give up. Do you pressure yourself?
Me: No. I love economics. That's why I'm studying it.
Her: That's good. Do you have any friends? Do they share the same interests?
Me: Yes. As you know, the economics department here is the best in the country. There are a lot of people like me here.
Her: Yes, I know. Do you think you talk to your parents as often as your friends?
Me: Equally so.
Her: Are you happy?
Me: Of course. I tell people, often, I'm learning what I love from who I want to love. I love it here.
Her: What's your favorite color?
Me: Teal.
Her: Movie?
Me: I don't watch movies.
Her: Music?
Me: Country and rock.
Her: Band?
Me: Pink Floyd.
Her: Interest?
Me: Economics. That's why I'm here. My work and joy overlap.
Her: Did you recently break-up with anyone or fight with someone?
Me: No, why?
Her: This is odd. I have never in my twenty years of doing this seen stories this different from each other. Do you think this could be a form of retaliation?
Me: Maybe, but I don't think I've upset anyone.
Her: Hmmm.
Me: Can you tell me who placed this concern?
Her: I don't feel comfortable telling you.
Me: Tell me.
Her: Someone in the school community.
Me: That doesn't answer my question.
Her: I don't feel comfortable telling you anything more. I'll tell you what, I need to give these notes to my supervisor. Next time I see you, I'll give you my old econ books.
Me: I guarantee I already have them.
Trying to entice me with books, what the hell.
What the fuck is happening? What is this about? Am I right that my rights were violated? What do I do now?
