Gaddafi: Littany of Crimes
1969: Overthrew the legitimate government of Libya.
1970: Torture and executions of 31 opponents.
1971: Torture and executions of 42 opponents.
1972: Prohibition of peaceful assembly and criminalizing political parties. 126 were civilians were jailed without charges or trials.
1973: Annulment of Libyas Constitution. Journalist Abdullah Darrat was kidnapped, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
1974: Declaration of the Cultural Revolution-Execution of opponents and destruction of government institutions.
1975: Renowned terrorist Carlos "The Jackal" hijacks an airplane carrying an Opec delegation and diverts to Algeria. Carlos was acting on behalf of Gaddafi.
1976: Execution of 25 students on University Campuses on April 7, and 21 military officers.
1977: Declaration of Jamahiriya, state of the masses, more aptly described as state of absolute mess.
1978: Abduction and disappearance of Imam Musa Sadr of Lebanon, his fate remains unknown. Start of military offensive against neighboring Chad.
1979: Formation of death squads with orders to assassinate all opponents.
1980: Mass Exodus of about 100,000 Libyans seeking refuge abroad.
1981: Execution of 13 high ranking army officers.
1982: Imprisonment and executions of 15 students,
1983: Torture and executions of 7 students and 6 military officers.
1984: Attempt to assassinate former Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah Bakkoush.
1985: Assassinations of 42 students, military officers, and businessmen.
1986: Bombing of Label Disco Club in Berlin, killing 2 US soldiers and injured over 200 people
1987: Chad war claims 10,000 fatalities and many more civilian victims.
1988: Downing PAN AM 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 259 passengers, and 11 villagers on the ground.
1989: Downing of UTA French airliner over Niger, killing all 180 passengers
1989: Downing of French airliner UTA, flight 772 over Niger, killing 170 passengers.
1990: Kidnapping of Jaballah Mattar and Izzat Mgarief from their home in Cairo and smuggling them into Libya. Their fate remains unknown.
1991: Assassination of Saad Albarasi inside the Benghazi television station.
1992: Downing of Libyan Airliner 1103 over Tripoli on a flight from Benghazi, 157 passengers and crew members died.
1993: Kidnapping Human Rights activist Mansour Kikhia in Cairo and smuggling him into Libya, where his fate remains unknown.
1994: Numerous prisoners of conscience died because of torture and neglect. Executions of military officers accused of attempting to overthrow Gaddafi.
1995: Gaddafi demands more violence against his opponents.
1996: Abuslim Prison massacre, 1200 political prisoners were gunned down in cold blood on June 29.
1997: Formation of more assassination squads.
1998: Arrest and imprisonment of 152 individuals without charges or due process.
1999: Execution of Sheikh Alwafi Ambaya without charges or trial.
2000: Forced deportation of 8 Libyans from Jordan to Libya, three were executed upon arrival.
2001: Gaddafi acknowledges his biological and chemical weapons activities.
2002: Arrest and imprisonment of Fathi Eljahmi, renowned democracy activist, after he called for an open society and transparent elections.
2003: Gaddafi uses biological and chemical weapons against dissidents sheltering in the Green Mountains, east of the City of Benghazi.
2004: Attempt against the life of then-Prince Abdulla of Saudi Arabia, presently King Abdullah.
2005: Assassination of Dhaif Alghazal and mutilating his body.
2006: Killing a prisoner and injuring several others at Abuslim prison after complaints of bad conditions. Security officers fired at demonstrators outside the Italian Consulate in Benghazi resulting in deaths and injuries.
2007: Arrest of several peaceful demonstrators amongst them was Dr. Idriss Bufayed.
2008: Assassination of Mohamed Adel Abu Ali after his deportation from Sweden to Libya after he was denied political asylum.
2009: Death of Fathi Eljahmi from prolonged solitary confinement and denial of all medical care. Fathi Eljahmi died in May 2009.
