WASHINGTON - De Amerikaanse regering wil enkele miljarden dollars van de Libische leider Muammar Kaddafi, waarop ze beslag heeft gelegd, gebruiken om de oppositie in het Noord-Afrikaanse land te helpen. Dat heeft het Witte Huis dinsdag laten weten.

Eerder dinsdag zei minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Hillary Clinton dat de VS naar mogelijkheden zoekt om het het verzet in Libië te steunen.

Tijdens een bezoek aan de Egyptische hoofdstad Caïro repte Clinton onder meer van het uitbreiden van de humanitaire hulp.

De opstandelingen tegen Kaddafi raken steeds verder in het nauw. Na zware bombardementen en artillerievuur moesten de rebellen zich dinsdag terugtrekken uit de stad Ajdabiyah.

Voor de militairen die loyaal zijn aan Kaddafi, was Ajdabiyah de laatste grote hindernis bij hun opmars naar Benghazi, het hoofdkwartier van de rebellen in het oosten.

Verwoeste schepen

Opstandelingen in Libië zeggen dat ze aan de oostkust, in de buurt van de stad Ajdabiyah, twee oorlogsschepen van Muammar Kaddafi tot zinken hebben gebracht. Dat heeft Fathi Terbel van de Nationale Libische Raad, die het verzet tegen Kaddafi vertegenwoordigt, dinsdag gezegd.

Terbel liet weten dat de rebellen de schepen van Kaddafi met een gevechtsvliegtuig en een helikopter hadden aangevallen.

Hij sprak een bericht van de staatstelevisie tegen dat troepen van de Libische leider een zone bij Benghazi hebben aangevallen. Benghazi in het oosten van het Noord-Afrikaanse land is het hoofdkwartier van de rebellen.
