[Centraal] MMA topic #60: Dream or Nightmare?

1:05pm -- Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta and Scott Coker on the call.

1:06pm -- Scott, what prompted you to make the deal? Coker: It was a long and hard decision but investors (SVSE) wanted to get back to their hockey business so we looked at new offers/investors.

1:08pm -- Dana, will you merge brands down the road? White: Anything is possible, but as of now the plan is to run Strikeforce on Showtime like it has been. Showtime runs the production including choice of announcers.

1:09pm -- Coker: Approximately 140 fighters under contract with Strikeforce.

1:10pm -- Dana, is no competition a bad thing? White: There will always be competition, this is about growing the sport. It's a great day for fans and fighters. Lorenzo: We have vast financial resources and it's good for fighters to be with a big, healthy promotion. There are literally thousands of promotions worldwide so fighters still have plenty of options.

1:11pm -- Lorenzo says acquisition is in "early stages" and he hasn't talked to Showtime yet. If they want to pursue a new deal after current Strikeforce contract expires (in 2014) he would be willing to talk.

1:12pm -- UFC will implement unified rules of MMA in Strikeforce shows (including elbows on the ground) effective immediately.

1:13pm -- Dana says "superfights" are possible but it's too early to forecast fantasy match-ups. It's a work in progress.

1:15pm -- Fertitta: How quickly the UFC expands may dictate how they use newly acquired fighters.

1:17pm -- White: UFC anticipates no fallout from Canadian outcry against head injuries (RE: NHL).

1:20pm -- Will Strikeforce come to Canada? Coker: There was dialog with a casino and arena in Canada but we're still a few weeks away from any kind of announcement.

1:21pm -- White: There is a demand for MMA and it does not compete with other major sports like NFL and MLB. UFC has its own demand.

1:22pm -- What about comments from Paul Daley and Josh Barnett who have past issues with UFC? White: This is a business, if you don't like me you can always deal with Lorenzo but as of now we will honor all contracts.

1:23pm -- Another fantasy match-up question. Same answer: Work in progress and brands will run separately for now. Lorenzo: There is still unfinished business in Strikeforce (RE: Grand Prix, other upcoming events).

1:25pm -- Will the UFC open themselves up to anti-trust suits with new acquisition? Fertitta: Doubtful, plenty of promotions already exist and there are no barriers to new promotions starting and signing fighters. White: All you need is big balls and big money.

1:26pm -- White: No plans to do Strikeforce "Ultimate Fighter" but you never know.

1:27pm -- Does the Strikeforce purchase help the UFC get into Japan? Lorenzo: Too early to tell but Coker has good relationship there and it warrants future consideration.

1:28pm -- Coker: UFC purchase had no effect on delay of heavyweight tournament.

1:29pm -- White: UFC will not counter-program Strikeforce events moving forward but will continue to air old UFC pay-per-views on Spike TV.

1:30pm -- Dana White has not changed his opinion of female fighting (not a fan) and calls it "Scott's deal."

1:31pm -- How much closer does this acquisition put you to a Zuffa "On Demand" channel? Lorenzo: Nothing to report on that but we will use the Strikeforce library like we have for PRIDE and WEC. UFC has 4000+ library of fights.

1:33pm -- Coker: Strikeforce still interested in Hispanic market and can now use Zuffa backing to help capitalize on that demand.

1:34pm -- White: It's up to the fighters if they want to do a union but the problem is MMA isn't a team sport and top paying guys may not want to kick some of that money to guys coming up or who might not make it -- but that is entirely up to the fighters.

1:35pm -- Another fantasy match-up question and (surprise) same answer: "Business as usual." Coker cannot comment on specific contracts but reiterates that Fedor Emelianenko fights for Strikeforce on Showtime.

1:36pm -- Was Strikeforce purchase a defensive move to keep it from other investors? White and Fertitta: No, and they hadn't heard the rumor of other interested parties until today.

1:39pm -- White: This will be the biggest sport in the world because everyone likes fighting and we have big International plans. We need more fighters as we continue to grow the sport worldwide. We're in half a billion homes so we're doing a pretty good job.

1:40pm -- How does the UFC keep the championship picture from getting messy like boxing now that UFC owns two promotions with two sets of champs? White: Nothing has changed. Two separate brands and each has its own set of champions to represent it.

1:41pm -- Fertitta: We're growing our brand through increased presence like new "Prelim" specials on TV and Facebook and want to introduce new fighters and build talent overseas and in different markets through more content like "Fight Nights" and related programming. White: There is a ton of demand worldwide and we're trying to keep up.

1:42pm -- Fertitta: We don't feel like we have a year-round presence overseas and now it's just a "special event" type of approach. Goal is to make it a full-time presence.

1:45pm -- Call ends.

Onbegrijpelijk eigenlijk dat Dana geen vrouwelijke MMA gevechten wil?
Ik zou geen enkel argument tegen kunnen verzinnen eigenlijk

Dat begrijp ik ook niet nee. Sex sells, zeker bij het meeste MMA publiek wat je bij die shows ziet zitten meestal

Gina als een gezicht voor UFC zou echt enorm veel $$$$$$$$$$$ opleveren. En alle vrouwen gevechten die ik heb gezien bij strikeforce waren meestal beter dan 90% van de mannelijke UFC gevechten laatste tijd.

Niet? Ik wel, en dat komt goed overeen met wat Dana zegt: er zijn simpelweg niet genoeg vrouwen om gewichtsklassen te vullen. Miesha Tate staat te wachten op haar kans om de 135lbs-titel van Marloes af te pakken, maar wie is de volgende voor Cyborg? Haar laatste twee gevechten waren tegen Coenen en Finney, die allebei een gewichtsklasse lager vechten dan Cyborg en alleen maar omhoog kwamen zodat zij een challenger had voor de titel.

Er zijn simpelweg te weinig vrouwen om regelmatig goede gevechten neer te kunnen zetten, te weinig vrouwen om onderling te laten vechten. Zo kun je geen hype opbouwen en er amper geld aan verdienen. Dana weet dit.

UFC 128 van aankomende zaterdag is weer behoorlijk stacked. Tijd voor picks?

Mauricio Rua vs. Jon Jones:
Als hij zijn A-game brengt, is Shogun de beste LHW ter wereld. Ik zou de 2005 Shogun als favoriet zien tegenover praktisch iedereen, en de geduldige Shogun uit de Machida-gevechten was misschien nog beter. Helaas komt Shogun van weer een knieblessure en operatie, en de laatste keer dat dat gebeurde, verloor hij van Forrest Griffin. Daarbij helpt het niet dat Jones een goede style-matchup is.
Jones heeft een gigantische reach (iets waar Shogun tegen Forrest ook problemen mee had), is bijna net zo explosief als Shogun was in 2005 en heeft een top game waar de beste worstelaars uit de divisie geen antwoord op hadden. Shogun is geen geweldige worstelaar, dus de kans is heel groot dat hij op zijn rug eindigt en ellebogen gaat eten. Shogun heeft indrukwekkende sweeps, maar het is lastig iemand te sweepen die constant zijn ellebogen in je gezicht smijt.
Aan de andere kant vecht Jones wel op korte termijn, maar ik kreeg niet echt het idee dat hij erg veel damage heeft opgelopen tegen Bader. Daarbij was zijn teamgenoot al aan het trainen voor Shogun, dus zal Greg Jackson al een gameplan hebben waar Jones gebruik van kan maken.
Ik hoop de oude Shogun te zien zaterdag, maar de veiligere pick is toch Jon Jones, waarschijnlijk bij decision of late submission.

Urijah Faber vs. Eddie Wineland
Geweldig gevecht! Beiden zijn behoorlijk explosief en zonder echt duidelijke zwakheden. Ik denk dat Faber te sterk is. Kandidaat voor Fight of the Night. Faber met (T)KO of submission.

Jim Miller vs. Kamal Shalorus: no-brainer. Miller is een van de besten ter wereld. Submission win.

Nate Marquardt vs. Dan Miller: Marquardt is beter in elk opzicht, Miller is net boven gemiddeld. Ik ga voor een decision.

Cro cop vs. Brendan Schaub: Cro cop is done. Hij is te oud om nieuwe truukjes te leren, en te langzaam om op zijn oude truukjes te leunen.

Luiz Cane vs. Elliott Marshall
Ricardo Almeida vs. Myke Pyle
Kurt Pellegrino vs. Gleison Tibau: ook kanshebber voor Fight of the Night!
Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian Loveland: no-brainer, Benavidez heeft alleen van Cruz verloren, en de laatste keer was het een split decision. Benavidez is een wereldtopper en zou niet weg gestopt mogen worden op de prelims.

Mauricio Rua vs. Jon Jones: Een van mijn favoriete vechters ooit! Shogun gaat laten zien wat het verschil is tussen een complete vechter en een gehypt talent.
Urijah Faber vs. Eddie Wineland: Ik hoop op een mooie KO.
Jim Miller vs. Kamal Shalorus: Weinig WEC gezien, maar Miller is solid.
Nate Marquardt vs. Dan Miller: Dit wordt een decision en ik denk dat Miller daar beter in is
Crocop vs. Brendan Schaub: Crocop moet de politiek weer in, hij wordt geKOed

I've been enjoying Rashad in his new role on PMR every week. His candor and honesty has been pretty refreshing and he didn't mince words tonight.

Rashad had a few things to say during the segment:

- Jones signed up at Jackson's under the proviso that he would NEVER fight any of the other Jackson's fighters.

- Rashad talked with Jones after the interview he gave where Jones said that he would fight him. Rashad was very surprised. Jones had never expressed this. The interview was pretaped and Rashad never received a call or text alerting him to it. His reaction on ESPN was one of surprise when he said "I'm not a punk; if he says he'll fight me, I'll fight him."

- They had a conversation afterward and Rashad left feeling like there was more that needed to be discussed...this bridge would be crossed when it needed to be.

- Regarding Jones' frustrated comments on the media conference call where he said he wouldn't be taking Rashad into the cage with him though he was his friend and replied with "I have a lot of people outside of Rashad who I can draw energy and power from and they'll all be with me."

- "That does sound a little bit cold-blooded", Rashad replied. "Jon's a young guy and when you're a young guy sometimes you talk a little too fast for your brain to keep up...I don't think it's acceptable at all. I don't think it's something I'd say."

- When Jones said "I absolutely hate when people mention Rashad Evans, especially throughout this training camp....for people to even be mentioning Rashad Evans right now...I think it's ludicrous. Rashad is not in my mind, he's not in my being, he as absolutely zero to do with my heart and who I am right now. This guy has nothing to do with Shogun and from here on out, I don't think I'll answer a question about Rashad."

- Rashad replied with "it sounds like he wants to fight, huh? Those sound like fighting words". He went on to say, "Ya know, I don't know how to judge the kid. It's kinda messed up, to be honest. Ya know, I can't control what anyone else says and it sounds to me like he's a little bit insecure about the whole thing. Sometimes when you open your mouth you show what you're afraid of more than anything. I don't know why he has such an adverse response like that to me. I've never challenged him or made him feel like he should do that sort of thing. It sounds to me -- if I was out of the situation -- that he was feeling insecure about me [not Shogun responding to Pepe's point]."

- Rashad goes on to point out fairly eloquently about how you have to answer reporters' questions to the best of your ability. You can't just expect to not talk about a situation where you stepped in for a friend and training partner in a title fight who was injured. He does say that that made Jon "sound like a baby".

- When asked to rank his feelings toward fighting Jones on a scale of 1-10, Rashad didn't say how likely he would be to fight Jon but said his mind is very open to it because of how things have gone. He's finding out that his teammate may fight him over TV and that this is not how things are done. Out of respect to the coach and Jon, he'll talk to them before he pulls the trigger.

- Rashad says that he's been working a lot with Trevor Wittman over the last few camps. Trevor is his guy and he's been spending time with him including the last 2 camps. By the way Rashad is talking, it seems like he doesn't have a problem fighting his training partners; that he agrees with Trevor. It sounds like Rashad had enough respect for Greg Jackson's agreement to not fight his training partners that he went along with Jackson's law. Now that the school has grown and Jones has said he would fight Evans and Jackson has not intervened and restated his mandate that Jones never fight any training partners, things may be different.

- Rashad says that the reality may be that he won't use Greg at all and has been playing around with the idea.

Wat Splacka al zegt, Jones is geen hype meer te noemen, gewoon één van de besten op dit moment. Ik denk echter wel dat een titlefight nog net iets te vroeg komt. De ervaring van Rua zal in dit gevecht de doorslag geven en er voor zorgen dat hij de titel behoudt. Jones komt later nog wel aan de orde als champ.

Mauricio Rua vs. Jon Jones:
Damn wat heb ik zin in dit gevecht! Het vervelende vind ik dat ik het gewoon haat om beiden te zien verliezen nu. Shogun een geweldige vechter, Jones ook zeer indrukwekkend en is ook nog eens zeer jong, dus alle tijd en ruimte om nog te verbeteren. Worstelen is top van Jones, striking is aardig onorthodox en hij weet af en toe bizarre dingen te brengen. Staat een beetje waar Shogun in 2005 stond: jong en op het punt om een title te veroveren.

Voor mij is dit echt een toss-up. Shogun met meer ervaring, betere striking en submissions. Jones absoluut de betere worstelaar en zijn GnP is ziek (Vera, Hamill, Matyushenko). Hij is alleen nooit getest tegen iemand met echte submission skills, Shogun heeft de capaciteiten om goede submissions uit te voeren, al heeft hij dat niet vaak laten zien. Ground game in ieder geval wel in orde. Ik vraag me ook af in hoeverre die dunne beentjes van Jones reageren op een goede lowkick, denk dat Jones dit snel naar de grond wil brengen.

50/50. Mijn gok zou zijn Shogun op TKO, maar Jones krijgt zijn kansen nog wel. Leert hier alleen maar van.

Ik denk dat ervaring een grote rol speelt in dit gevecht, ik vond Jones al heel zenuwachtig overkomen (prefight/entrance) tegen Bader, laat staan een title fight.

Als Shogun een aantal takedowns kan stoppen zal het zelfvertrouwen van Jones ook zakken en Rua sloopt dan de Bones in Jonny's benen

TKO voor RUA, maar het kan ook gewoon naar Bones gaan hoor, hij heeft zich bewezen imo, de vraag is kan hij het nu al aan om de top 5 te vechten (nu nummer 1). Kan te vroeg zijn, maar Shogun deed het ook op zijn 23/24 dus wie weet. Wordt vast een top gevecht

Ja de meeste vrouwelijke MMA vechters zijn niet zo mooi nee, maar ze zullen er vast wel zijn. Moeten alleen gevonden worden.

Het is een vechtsport, geen WWE waar zoveel mogelijk lekkere wijven moeten zitten
Gina is populair geworden doordat ze knap was, maar daarna won ze ook nog eens. Die combinatie maakte haar populair. Dankzij Gina is Cyborg nu ook bekend, maar dan als vrouwelijke vernietiger.

Er zijn gewoon te weinig echt goede vechters. Het komt wel, maar nu absoluut nog niet.

Dat zeg ik ook niet, ik zie ook geen bikini modellen vechten. Mijn baas is een leuk meisje dat kickboxen doet, als MMA verder groeit zullen er veel meer komen, de meeste doen nu iets andere vechtsporten.
