Reddingsheli veel te oud
De helikopter die werd ingezet bij de mislukte reddingsoperatie in Libië dateert uit 1978. Als de gegijzelde bemanningsleden gebruik hadden kunnen maken van de nieuwe NH-90 helikopter, was de evacuatie waarschijnlijk wel gelukt, omdat ze in dat geval de wachtende troepen tijdig hadden opgemerkt.
Dat zeggen ingewijden binnen de Koninklijke Marine die er voetstoots van uitgaan dat de achterhaalde uitrusting van de uit 1978 daterende Lynx heeft bijgedragen aan de dramatische ontdekking van de militairen tijdens hun reddingsoperatie: "Met modernere spullen aan boord hadden ze de grondtroepen ruim op tijd ontdekt," aldus experts bij de zeemacht.
De uit 1978 daterende wentelwiek heeft aanzienlijk minder moderne snufjes zoals warmtemeters en radar aan boord dan de nieuwe NH-90 waarmee de marine al jaren geleden had moeten vliegen. Door opeenvolgende productieproblemen bij het consortium waarbij ons land twintig van de nieuwe NH-90's bestelde, begon de levering pas in 2010.
De door Defensie bestelde helikopters komen ruim drie jaar later dan beloofd. Op dit moment zijn nog lang niet alle toestellen geleverd, terwijl de eerste exemplaren vooral voor opleidingsdoeleinden worden ingezet.
Mede hierom vertrok ook het fregat Hr. Ms. Tromp weken geleden met een bejaard Lynx toestel aan boord uit Den Helder. Bij de planning van een snelle evacuatie via de Tromp kon Defensie dus niet terugvallen op een alternatief.De aan het 860 Squadron gevlogen Lynx helis opereren vanaf fregatten. Vanaf vliegkamp De Kooy bij Den Helder worden er ook nog altijd tientallen reddingsoperaties per jaar mee uitgevoerd op de Noordzee en de Waddenzee. Door de grote vertragingen met de levering van de NH-90, zijn de Lynx toestellen aan aantal malen gemoderniseerd om ze langer dan was gepland in de lucht te houden. Het betrof hier vooral mechanische aanpassingen. De rekening hiervan is door Defensie bij de te laat leverende producent NH-Industries gedeclareerd. Een zegsman van toenmalig staatssecretaris Jack de Vries van Defensie omschreef de vervanging van de helis twee jaar geleden nog als een hoofdpijndossier.

News of a fresh airstrike in the eastern town of Ajdabiyah is breaking on Reuters. This is the third day in a row the town has reportedly been bombed by jets. The target appears to have been the military base held by rebels but it missed its target, according to rebel volunteers guarding the facility:
We were sat here, heard the jet, then the explosion and the earth shook. They fell outside the walls," said Hassan Faraj, who was guarding an ammunitions store at the Haniyeh base.

A 13-year-old boy was killed when pro-Gaddafi forces tried to retake Brega on Wednesday, Human Rights Watch is reporting. It says Hassan Umran was herding goats when he was shot in the head. The organisation's emergencies director, Peter Bouckaert, visited a morgue in Ajdabiya to try to establish a death toll from Wednesday's fighting. Peter also provided us with excellent updates from Alexandria during the Egyptian protests. He said:
We found 14 bodies at the morgue, many of them fighters, but also including the body of 13-year-old Hassan Umran, a young shepherd. Later, we went to see Hassan's twin brother, Hussein, and his younger brother Faraj, 11, who were both wounded in the same incident that killed Hassan. They and their relatives explained that the boys had been out herding their goats and sheep on the outskirts of Brega around 8am on 2 March when the pro-Gaddafi militia passed by in more than 30 vehicles heading towards the university. They said that the militia fired rifles and rocket-propelled grenades in the direction of the boys. All three boys were injured by shrapnel from the grenades, but Hassan was killed when he was hit with bullets to his head.
When we arrived at the morgue, the doctors and attendants were busy washing the bodies and preparing them for burial by wrapping them in clean white cloths. Among the 14 dead were three bodies said to be from the pro-Gaddafi militia, but who were not carrying identification. It is believed that when the pro-Gaddafi fighters retreated, they took many of their wounded and dead, so the total casualties from their side are unknown. Aside from young Hassan, the remaining 11 dead included three guards from the Ammonium Factory, and seven fighters who had participated in the gun-battle on the rebel side.

Should the Arabs and the West do anything to remove Muammar Qaddafi?
IF FOR nothing else, the dictators of Tunisia and Egypt must be thanked for bowing out rather than steeping themselves in blood. No such hurriedly happy outcome is promised in Libya, where Muammar Qaddafi seems bent on fighting back (see article). Even in defeat he may, like Samson, be ready to pull down the pillars of his rickety regime on his hapless people. If the death toll suddenly rises into the thousands, can the rest of the world stand idly by?

Switzerland paid Hannibal Gaddafi SFr1.5 million
The foreign ministry has confirmed that Bern last year paid SFr1.5 million ($1.6 million) into a bank account in Germany. The aim was to build confidence with Libya.
The payment was made to Hannibal Gaddafi, a son of the Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi, whose arrest in 2008 by Geneva authorities on charges of mistreating his servants at a luxury hotel in the city caused a crisis between the two countries.
A spokesman for the ministry said the payment was made as part of efforts to try to secure the release of Swiss businessman Max Göldi, who was held in a Libyan jail for four months on alleged visa irregularities.
Goldis arrest with another Swiss businessman in Libya was widely seen as retaliation by Tripoli for Hannibals detention.
The spokesman described the payment as compensation in the event that Geneva authorities could not discover who handed over mugshots of Hannibal that were subsequently published by the Tribune de Genève newspaper.
He said both sides had agreed the money should be used for humanitarian purposes. To the ministrys knowledge and a few days before the outbreak of turmoil in Libya the money was still in the German account, he added.
Switzerland on February 24 blocked all assets in the country belonging to the Libyan leader, his family and entourage.

Beetje jammer dat ook kindjes worden neergeschoten.. Kan me ook niet voorstellen wat er als militair door je heen gaat wanneer je mensen van die leeftijd neerschiet.
Ik houd het in de gaten, zou mooi zijn als ze toch nog met veel mensen tegelijk de straat op gaan.

On Thursday. Fidel Castro, Cuba's former president, denounced what he said was the inevitable U.S.-backed invasion of Libya by NATO to get its hands on that country's oil.
The U.N. Security Council over the weekend voted for tough restrictions and possible war crimes charges against the Libyan regime. The United States has said all options are on the table.

Waarom zou je die wapendepots heel laten? Omdat Ghaddafi wapens nodig heeft? Hij heeft wapens en geld zat. Het risico om die wapens in handen van de oppositie te laten is veel te groot.
De piloten gooien expres mis, ze vechten niet voor Ghaddafi.
