SICILY, ITALY (BNO NEWS) -- Mount Etna, which is located on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily, briefly erupted on late Wednesday evening, volcanists and witnesses said on Thursday.
Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe with a standing of 3,329 meters (10,922 feet) high. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has seen increased activity in recent months
On Tuesday evening, the country's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said it had recorded a slight increase in volcanic tremors that reached its peak by 7 a.m. local time on Wednesday. It then quickly diminished.
Hours later, at around 9.30 p.m. local time on Wednesday, a small eruption at Mount Etna sent lava down the mountain. "Shortly after [9 p.m.] an overflow began from the edge of the east pit crater," a statement from the institute said, adding that the lava flow was expanding in the direction of Valle del Bove.
The eruption of Etna lasted only about an hour although the lava flow remained visible as of Thursday morning, lighting up the sky but posing no threat to the towns and cities near the volcano.
As it was dark at the time of the eruption, it was not immediately clear if Etna had created an ash cloud. "The emission of volcanic ash is possible," the institute added.

After reports of mysterious mass animal deaths around the planet, photos of a fierce volcanic eruption might confirm that the end of the world is nigh.
Thankfully, these magnificent pictures of Mount Etna's latest eruption are merely a chance to revel in the awesome power of nature rather than a reason to start stocking up on canned goods.
The 3,329-metre (10,922-feet) volcano erupted for around an hour yesterday evening, lighting up the sky on the small Italian island of Sicily.
Etna is Europe's tallest and most active volcano and has seen increased activity in recent months yet its seismic might poses no immediate threat to the nearby towns and cities.
According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, a slight increase in Etna's volcanic tremors had been recorded on Tuesday, reaching its peak at 7am local time yesterday.
The activity diminished but at 9:30pm local time on Wednesday night, Etna roared into life sending lava spewing down its sides.
'Shortly after [9pm] an overflow began from the edge of the east pit crater,' a statement from the institute said last night.
While the Sicilian communities near the volcano were not threatened by the latest eruption, it has not been established whether an ash cloud has been created by Etna's new activity.
'The emission of volcanic ash is possible,' a spokesperson for the institute added.
Large stones, known as volcanic 'bombs', and a sizeable quantity of ash was released by the volcano earlier this month, though no lava was released on that occasion.
Known as 'Jebel Utlamat' in Arabic - meaning 'mountain of fire - Etna's name is thought to originate from the Phoenician word 'attuna', meaning 'furnace'.
The volcano has been active for around half a million years, with 15,000 people killed during its most violent eruption in 1669.
While its modern eruptions have rarely threatened the inhabited areas in the volcano's vicinity, a lengthy blast in 2002 was spectacular enough for footage of it to be included in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

quote:Etna calmed down after renewed activity?
Mount Etna, one of most the active volcanoes in the world, calmed down after two days of activity.
Volcano experts said Monday in a report the volcano in Italy might have fallen back into a short calm phase before another active phase, “just around the corner.”
The 11,000-foot tall volcano had a collection of black smoke more than 2 miles high and spewed lava and shards of magma more than 1,200 feet into the air on Sunday before it calmed down.
The wind carried eruption fragments to towns of the large Sicilian city, Catania, but flight operations at the city were not affected.
(anp/kve)
quote:Eruption Etna linked to quake in Spain
ROME, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The eruption of the Etna volcano in southern Italy early Thursday is connected to the earthquakes that rocked the Spanish region of Murcia, killing 12 people and injuring more than 170 others, a seismology expert said Thursday.
"We are currently witnessing an intense seismic activity in the entire Mediterranean area from Spain all the way to Malta which has a certain impact on regional volcanoes," said Domenico Patane, director of the Sicily office of Italy s National Geophysics Institute.
Patane said volcanoes are like windows from where underground magma surfaces and it's normal that they respond to earthquakes occurring in a geographic proximity.
"The Spanish eastern coast hit by the quake, after all, lies close to Italy, in the Mediterranean. Both Spain and Sicily are on the same earth plate," he said.
The earthquakes in Spain on Wednesday, which could be felt in Madrid, reportedly had their epicenter near the towns of Lorca and Totana in the Murcia region. The initial tremor of 4.4 magnitude was followed by a quake of about 5.2 magnitude.
Around 2 a.m. Thursday people in Sicily felt the earth slightly tremble and heard the sound of an explosion coming from Etna's pit crater. < The eruption sent flying massive quantities of lava and volcanic ash, which spilled on the main town of Catania and other nearby villages but luckily caused no serious damage.
The central airport was forced to close after it was submerged by the ash.
Patane said there were no severe risks for local inhabitants but just for buildings and infrastructures that could be damaged by the ash and condensed lava.
"It's normal to have frequent small-scale quakes and minor volcano eruptions in the Mediterranean," he said, "We're used to seismic activity here in Sicily and recently several minor shocks have been felt also across the whole of Italy."
Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, with a 45-kilometer-diameter crater.
quote:Quick post - you might want to watch some of the Etna webcams as the volcano looks like it might be starting to put on a show. Dr. Boris Behncke has been warning us that the volcano has been showing signs - such as small explosions - that a new eruptive period might be starting, and it looks like tonight might be the time. You can check out the seismicity as well to see the action begin to ramp up.
quote:(AGI) Palermo - An uncountable series of quakes have been recorded in Sicily. The strongest one had a magnitude of 3.1 and was recorded in the province of Messina, along the northern coast of Sicily that has been subjected to a persisting series of seismic events in the last few weeks. The quake was detected 3:01 am at a depth of a little more than 8 km. In the same area, a lighter 2.3 magnitude quake was recorded at 1:58 at approximately the same depth. . .

quote:Etna updates
UPDATE 09:45 UTC : Due to the volcanic activity and the ash concentration in the air, the (important) regional airport of Catania was closed since yesterday 18:12 (6:12 PM). The airport reopened this morning at 07:00 ( 7 AM).
UPDATE 08:00 UTC : As stated below, the densely populated Catania area got a lot of ash showers covering cars and roofs with a gray layer.
UPDATE : One video tells more than a 1000 words. This YouTube video was recorded by Klaus Dorschfeldt alias KdEtna. We encourage our readers to take a look at his great Etna Channel on YouTube. The strong eruption was short-lived (see in-depth text below), which explains why there are only daylight videos from this eruption
A few days after the resumption of Strombolian activity at the crater located on the east flank of the Southeast Crater cone, a new paroxysmal eruptive episode has taken place on the afternoon of 9 July 2011.
This was the fifth eruptive episode since the beginning of 2011, and it was of shorter duration than its predecessors, but it produced ash and lapilli falls over the most densely populated area on Etna as far as Catania.
From 4 to 7 July, the active crater has been the site of weak Strombolian activity, which from the evening of 7 July on showed a gradual increase; this was accompanied by a slow augmentation of the volcanic tremor amplitude.
Small pyroclastic cones began to grow on the crater floor. The next morning, the increase in the intensity and frequency, and in the volcanic tremor amplitude, showed a clear acceleration, which seemed to indicate an imminent paroxysm. However, shortly after 06:00 GMT, the volcanic tremor amplitude showed an abrupt diminution, and the Strombolian activity at the active crater completely ceased.
On the morning of 9 July, Strombolian activity resumed, and the volcanic tremor amplitude started to rise rapidly. Shortly after 12:00 GMT, lava overflowed the eastern rim of the crater, and then followed the path of the lava flows emitted during the previous paroxysms. At 13:45 GMT the Strombolian explosions blended into a continuous lava fountain, which was accompanied by the formation of a dense eruption column several kilometers high. The eruption plume, which was heavily charged with tephra, expanded south- and southeastward, leading to ash and lapilli falls in the populated areas between Nicolosi and Catania toward south, and Trecastagni, Viagrande and Acireale toward southeast.
The paroxysmal activity lasted little longer than one hour, feeding a lava flow into the upper western part of the Valle del Bove, and generating strong emission of pyroclastic material; the activity showed a progressive diminution shortly after 15:30 GMT when volcanic tremor amplitude dropped to very low levels.
It has finally to be noted that during the intial phase of the paroxysmal activity, at 13:41 GMT, a powerful explosion at the Bocca Nuova generated an intense ash emission.
quote:Etna spews again on Tuesday
Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, erupted on Tuesday night resulting in the closure of the island’s main airport at Catania.
This is the sixth time that Mount Etna, which is popular among tourists, has erupted in 2011.
The last eruption occurred on Saturday. Italian officials had since said the 11,000-foot-tall volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, had calmed down after a week of activity.
Residents in surrounding areas had been warned however, that the Sicilian volcano might have fallen back into a short-lived slumber and another “active phase may just be around the corner.”
quote:Sicily's Mount Etna erupts
Mount Etna volcano on the island of Sicily, southern Italy, started erupting again at the weekend, sending flames and sparks shooting 250 metres into the air, and flows of lava down its slopes.
There were concerns that the ash could block flights out of nearby Catania airport, but the winds were blowing the ash away from the airport and no flights had been cancelled.
The volcanic activity started on Saturday morning and continued through the day and overnight into Sunday, according to the Italian Institute of Volcanology.
This is the fourth and the biggest eruption in July, after six months of calm, with lava fountains as high as 500 metres.
No casualties or damage to property have been reported.
Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and in the last few decades eruptions have been very frequent and lava flows have often threatened the villages surrounding the crater.
quote:Etna blijft spuwen

Mount Etna is spewing out ash and shooting spectacular bursts of lava high into the air as the eruption on the island of Sicily intensifies.
Italy's Civil Protection agency said Italy's geophysics and volcanology institute on Monday registered increased explosive activity by the volcano, eight days after the latest eruption began.
The government agency says Etna started spewing out a significant amount of ash in a southeast direction early in the day but that the eruption tapered off in about two hours.
Etna has several inhabited villages on its slopes.
Eruptions are not infrequent, and Italian airliners sometimes have to alter their routes to avoid flying through ash cloud. The airport at Catania city near the volcano wasn't affected by the ash Monday.

The culminating phase of this episode lasted less than a half hour but was more violent than those of the preceding paroxysms; on the contrary lava emission was rather minor, forming two small flows that reached the upper part of the steep western slope of the Valle del Bove. The ash plume was driven southwestward by the wind.
