Düsseldorf 2011: Camping for Eurovision?Düsseldorf – Displeasure erupts in Germany about the choice of Düsseldorf as host city (especially in those cities that didn’t get the Eurovision Song Contest). Hanover’s “Neue Presse” is outraged. During the Eurovision Song Contest, the world’s biggest packaging fair “Interpack” will also be held. 180.000 visitors are expected for the fair alone and Düsseldorf only offers 23.000 hotel beds. Many fans wanting to visit Düsseldorf for the Eurovision Song Contest found booked hotels or astronomical prices of up to 1000 euro per night. According to NP, the NDR had forbidden Hanover to have a second big event during (and even 6 weeks before) Eurovision. Furthermore, hotel owners in Hanover had agreed not to charge more than 150 euro per night. A search in booking.com reveals that only 10 of the 183 hotels in Düsseldorf still have free rooms.
Meanwhile eurovision.de has published an article to calm down the critics. They say, that fans can still sleep in one of the neighbouring cities of Düsseldorf: Mönchengladbach (25 minutes by train), Duisburg (most rooms full), Oberhausen (25-30 minutes), Krefeld (25-40 minutes), Dormagen, Leverkusen (30 minutes), Cologne (30 minutes, long-distance traffic and thus more expensive). The mayor of Mönchengladbach has already invited Eurovision fans: “Fans and visitors of the Eurovision Song Contest are always welcome here”.
Eurovision.de also writes, that the camping site in Düsseldorf is open throughout the entire year. So who is gonna be camping for Eurovision?
