Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- Some 1,200 people have fled an active volcano in northern Indonesia, the country's National Disaster Management Agency reported Monday.

The evacuations were made from two villages near Mount Karangetang, on Siau Island. The nearly 6,000-foot (1,827-meter) volcano is one of Indonesia's most active. An eruption in August killed four people.

Late last week, Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Management Agency raised the volcano's alert status to its highest level, after noting increased activity on March 11.

Ash clouds from Mount Karangetang reached 7,500 feet (2,300 meters) over the weekend, with lava reported flowing down the mountainside.

A flood of volcanic material from Indonesia's Mount Merapi has buried 21 houses in Central Java.

Residents say heavy rains over the weekend turned into a boiling flood as they hit the volcano and washed down to the village of Agromulyo.

The Jakarta Post says the torrent of water was strong enough to wash sand and stone down the volcano's slope.

There have been no fatalities, but one resident told local media a family of three have suffered burns.

NewZealand volcano shows signs of activity
The aviation alert level around Mount Ruapehu has been raised as the volcano in the central North Island shows signs of activity.

The volcano surveillance co-ordinator for GNS Science, Brad Scott, says the temperature at the crater lake is only four degrees shy of its highest ever recorded level of 42.5°C.

Mr Scott says there have also been increases in seismic activity, changes in lake chemistry and increases in carbon dioxide emission which have never been seen before while the lake is this hot.

He says the changes show the volcano is more active than usual and warrants raising the Aviation Colour Code to a yellow alert, which means airlines should be aware of the risk of an eruption.

Mr Scott says the alert level will not be raised further unless an eruption is imminent.

The council should also constantly coordinate with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) who can help them during evacuation and relief efforts, he said.

Emergency assistance should also be rendered by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) local personnel through formulation of a responsive and doable contingency plan, and proper utilization of calamity funds.

So far, around 100 families have left the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone (PDZ) but thousands continue to defy the appeal of local authorities because the situation there has not yet worsened.

Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles on Tuesday added to the snowballing calls for residents to evacuate the area near the perilous Taal Volcano. “They should evacuate as this is also for their own safety."

The bishop, however, admitted that authorities must equally understand the continued refusal of residents to leave.

Still, the bishop said people must continue to pray so that disaster would not strike the area.

“Let us not be pessimistic… God is good. He will not allow the volcano to erupt,” said Arguelles.

From 21 volcanic earthquakes last Saturday, the seismic activity dropped to 11 on Tuesday, Phivolcs said in a separate advisory. But this does not guarantee that Taal has simmered down.

Phivolcs said the alert status remains hoisted over Taal because magma has been intruding towards the surface, as manifested by high carbon dioxide emissions and continued seismic activity.

Water temperature also slightly increased from 30 to 30.5 degrees Celsius in the past 24 hours.

With this, state volcanologists advised the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mount Tabaro are still strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate.

“Breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to human, animals and even cause damage to vegetation,” the advisory read.

Health officials earlier said that an ash explosion could cause respiratory problems, eye irritation and even skin diseases due to its high chemical content. Excessive exposure to carbon dioxide, meanwhile, can pose asthma attacks.

Ecuador shut schools in four towns near the Tunguarahua volcano as ash spewed more than two miles into the sky, damaging crops and endangering the health of nearby residents.

Authorities are urging people to cover their mouths and noses with masks and shut windows amid the furious venting of Tunguarahua that began on Monday.

The state Geophysical Institute said lava was flowing from the summit caldera - crater - down the flanks of the 16,480ft peak, 85 miles south east of the capital Quito.

The Education Ministry said classes in the nearby towns would be suspended.

Tunguarahua has been active since 1999. Its eruptions killed at least four people in 2006.

A volcano that hasn't been in the news lately in Indonesia appears to be showing signs of restlessness, namely Gamkonora. This is amusing because just yesterday I was looking at my IAVCEI Volcanoes calendar and noticed an anniversary coming up this week of a 1673 eruption of the same volcano and I thought "I haven't heard much of Gamkonora lately". Ask and ye shall receive, eh? Anyway, Gamkonora is on Halmahera and is part of a larger caldera system. Interestingly, the GVP reports that it last erupted in 2007, but obviously with little fanfare (except these NASA and ESA images - see below). Most of the previous eruptions over the last few hundred years have been VEI 1-2 (small), but the 1673 eruption is estimated to be a VEI 5, so the potential is there. The latest report from Gamkonora mentions white plumes coming from the summit and a sulfurous odor, prompting an elevation of the alert status to 2. Indonesia is still recovering from its last major eruption at Merapi, with the government taking charge to move people displaced by the eruption to safer, permanent homes.

Visitors to Japan have been told not to go within one kilometre of Mount Naka, after the volcanic activity at Mount Aso was raised from level one to level two.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), is concerned that debris from the active volcano could be launched from Mount Naka as well, the Associated Press reports.

Earlier today (May 16th), a small eruption was recorded, with a 500-metre high plume of volcanic smoke observed in the skies during the morning.

Mount Naka and Mount Aso are situated on Kyushu, Japan's third-largest island, and are they part of a range of five peaks in the central cone group.

The nearby Mount Nakadake is a popular tourist spot, but is often closed off due to the volcanic gases it emits from time to time, so travellers with respiratory problems are not recommended to visit this site.

New eruption at Japan's Aso caldera

Japan has had a quite a year within geologic activity - some of it very tragic, some of it less so. Volcanically, both Sakurajima and Kirishima have put on shows that captured the attention of the world. Now it seems that another Japanese volcano might be joining the list for 2011. The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) raised the alert status today to Level 2 (from 1) for Mt. Aso on Kyushu Island. Since Friday, Nakadake at Aso produced a small, 500 meter / ~1,600 feet steam-and-ash plume (video) with minor explosions.

Aso itself is, much like Kirishima, actually a complex of volcanoes within a 24 km caldera (see the stunning image below). The current activity is centered at Nakadake, a popular hiking destination that has had some problems with volcanic gas emissions. Nakadake is the most active vent amongst 17 within the Aso caldera, producing numerous small VEI 1-2 explosions over the last few centuries - some of which have lead to fatalities. However, the Aso caldera has had larger eruptions that produced significant pyroclastic activity including a number of VEI 3 eruptions that have left noticeable ash layers. Phreatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions - interactions with water - are common at Nakadake due to the small crater lake found at the volcano (see top left).

There are a multitude of webcams pointed at Aso - so you can see if you can check out any of the action if the volcano does start erupting more vigorously. Aso does have an associated volcano observatory at the University of Kyoto, but there is current no English version.

Taal
PHIVOLCS might have their hands full in the near future. They have been watching the Taal caldera closely as it shows signs that it could be headed for an eruption. The latest update from PHIVOLCS says that seismicity has continued unabated at the caldera and the lake water from the crater lake at Volcano Island continues to get warmer. All of this means that Taal is likely seeing magma rising under the caldera and the Alert Status currently sits at Level 2 as many people are left waiting and wondering what Taal might do.

Bulusan and Mayon
However, over the last few days, a couple other Philippine volcanoes have also gotten people's attention again. Bulusan has experienced another set of phreatic (steam-driven) explosions (video) and Mayon has seen an uptick in the number of earthquakes and rockfalls felt at that volcano. Now, these events don't mean a large eruption is imminent at either volcano, but they do suggest activity in the magmatic systems of both (not unsurprising). At Bulusan, after the Friday explosions, only 4 earthquakes were felt, but the latest update from PHIVOLCS this morning says that over 80 earthquakes were felt in 7 hours Monday (5/16) morning - but the Alert Status remains at Level 1. However, the explosions over the last week has deposited a few millimeters of ash in villages around the volcano. (I am a little irked that PHIVOLCS had to come out and tell people that the low level of seismicity in the Philippines - a tectonically active area - was in fact not caused by a planetary alignment.)

Mayon hasn't seen any type of explosions during its recent revival of activity, but vigorous steam plumes, a glow at night from the summit and these small earthquakes/rockfalls all remind is that the volcano still has magma relatively close to the surface. Mayon, too, remains at Level 1 alert.

Managua - Nicaragua's Telica volcano spewed a massive cloud of gas and ash into the air Tuesday following several strong explosions.

Material was ejected 1.2 kilometres into the air above the crater of the 1,060-metre volcano, the seismological institute Ineter said. A total of 50 explosions were recorded.

Since May 9, Ineter has recorded 59 seismic shocks in the area, and Telica had ejected a large amount of sand on nearby cities since Friday.

Sixty nearby villages were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The volcano is located in Leon province, some 130 kilometres north-west of Managua. It last erupted in 1948.

Het aantal trillingen in de vulkaan is ook relatief flink toegenomen. In de periode vanaf januari 2011 tot aan 18 mei 2011 werden er maar drie trillingen waargenomen. Tussen 18 en 22 mei waren dit er ineens 62. Ook komt er volgens metingen in de buurt van de Timbang krater een kleine hoeveelheid koolstofdioxide vrij.

Inwoners in het gebied worden door de wijziging van de alarm-status opgeroepen om alert te zijn op eventuele plotselinge veranderingen door de vulkaan veroorzaakt. Ze kunnen het beste ook een afstand van 500 meter tot de krater houden. Het BMKG liet ook direct weten dat er op dit moment geen enkele aanleiding is dat er een grote uitbarsting aan zit te komen.

Also, it said a fair crater glow (Intensity II, can be seen by the naked eye) was observed from 8:47 p.m. Tuesday to 4:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Phivolcs maintained Alert Level 1 remains over Mayon Volcano, and reminded the public not to enter the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and

Het is namelijk goed mogelijk dat er plotseling een hoeveelheid koolstofdioxide wordt uitgestoten door de vulkaan zonder dat dit direct merkbaar is.

Mexicaanse vulkaan stoot 3 km hoge aswolk uit
De Mexicaanse vulkaan Popocatépetl heeft vandaag een 3 kilometer hoge aswolk uitgestoten. Een direct gevaar voor de bevolking in het omliggende gebied is er niet, aldus het nationale centrum voor burgerbescherming in Mexico-Stad.
Aan de uitstoot van de grote hoeveelheden as gingen meerdere explosies in het binnenste van de vulkaan vooraf. Dat gebeurt wel vaker, maar een 3 kilometer hoge aswolk is ongewoon.

De Popocatépetl is een actieve vulkaan en met 5452 meter de op een na hoogste berg van Mexico. Popocatépetl betekent Rokende Berg in de taal van de Nahua, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Mexico. De Popocatépetl ligt 70 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Mexico-Stad. (anp/adha)

Evacuaties na vulkaaneruptie Chili

Vanwege een uitbarsting van een vulkaan in het midden van Chili zijn zo'n 3500 mensen geëvacueerd. De vulkaan maakt deel uit van de Puyehue-Cordón Caulle-vulkanen.

De uitbarsting komt onverwacht omdat de vulkanen al tientallen jaren niet actief zijn.

De as reikt tot tien kilometer hoog en drijft richting Argentinië. Een vliegveld net over de grens in Argentinië is dicht en ook een drukke grensovergang is gesloten.

Voorzorg
Volgens de Chileense autoriteiten is de evacuatie een voorzorgsmaatregel en lopen de omliggende huizen geen direct gevaar. Over eventuele gewonden is nog niets bekend.

Chili is na Indonesië het land met de meeste vulkanen. In het Zuid-Amerikaanse land zijn ongeveer 2000 vulkanen.

A prominent Cambridge volcanologist, Clive Oppenheimer, has warned about the possibility of a super-volcano before the end of this century.

Talking during the 2011 Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts, Oppenheimer said he had evidence that there was a one-in-500 chance of the earth being hit by a volcano.

“The events in Japan remind us that you can have a tsunami and earthquake and a nuclear plant there as well and you can have these chain reaction events that are actually quite calamitous and they are not unimaginable,” said the Cambridge University reader.

Examining geological, historical and archeological records, the expert reminded his audience to major natural disasters of the 2010, including the Eyjafjallajokull eruption in Iceland that threatened the world by large-scale clouds of ash.

Oppenheimer also explained that “large earthquakes (category eight or thereabouts) can trigger volcanoes up to 1000km away, and that this year's devastating earthquake off Japan's coast could trigger another volcano in the vicinity.”

“Global warming and melting of the ice caps will also have an effect, because a lot of volcanoes are under the ice which, when you remove that loading, will also statistically be more likely to erupt.” he added.

Oppenheimer warned that if such an eruption was to happen tomorrow, the world would be far more vulnerable with the huge effects, both to people and to the technological world.

The volcano expert also statistically warned that within the next six months there is likely to be an eruption in Japan as a result of the recent catastrophic tsunami and earthquake in the country.

In Nieuw-Zeeland heeft zich vandaag een aardbeving voorgedaan met een kracht van 6.5 op de schaal van Richter. Het epicentrum lag 30 kilometer ten westen van de plaats Taupo, midden op het Nieuw-Zeelandse Noordereiland.

De beving vond 's middags om 15.36 uur plaats en was in een groot deel van het land te voelen. Er zijn vooralsnog geen berichten van schade. GNS, het geologisch bureau van de overheid, lokaliseert de aardbeving op 150 km diepte. Volgens het bureau doen bevingen van deze omvang zich op grote diepte elk jaar wel een paar maal voor in hetzelfde gebied.

Meanwhile, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, warned villagers living on the slopes of the volcano to be on the alert for a possible major eruption.

The last fatal eruption of Mt. Lokon was in 1991 when a Swiss woman is believed to have died as a result of being trapped by lava when the volcano erupted.

Her remains are yet to be discovered.

Inwoners werd op maandagavond al geadviseerd om zich te evacueren op advies van het Nationaal Agentschap Mitigatie Rampen. Toen werd de gevarenzone op slechts 3.5 kilometer gezet. Sutopo Nugroho van het agentschap riep toen bewoners op het gebied te verlaten omdat er verdere uitbarstingen vergezeld van lavastromen en asregens te verwachten waren.

Gisteren ochtend werd in alle vroegte de alarm-status van de vulkaan verhoogd naar een status 4, het hoogste niveau. Sinds 00:40 lokale gisteren tijd spuwt de vulkaan een variable hoeveelheid as uit. Om 15:50 lokale tijd volgde een uitbarsting waarbij dikke bruine as werd uitgestoten door de vulkaan, aldus Farid Ruskanda Bina van de observatiepost voor de vulkaan.

Volgens Bina gaat het om een grote uitbarsting van de vulkaan. Sutopo riep mensen in het gebied op vooral kalm te blijven, zich te laten evacueren en niet in te gaan op geruchten. De Lokon vulkaan ligt op zo'n 20 kilometer afstand van de stad Manado, de tweede grootste stad op et eiland Sulawesi. De laatste aswolken van de vulkaan worden in de richting van de stad Manado geduwd.
