James Bond volcano erupts

A Japanese volcano featured in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice has erupted covering surrounding villages with ash.

The Mount Shinomoedake volcano, in southern Japan erupted into life on Wednesday throwing ash almost 5,000ft into the air.

Roads have become unpassable and trains and flights to the area have been cancelled as officials assess the situation.

No injuries have been reported but a 1.2 mile safety exclusion zone has been created around the site.

The volcano has been active before, erupting in 1959, 1979 and most recently in 2008.

The volcano and surrounding area in southern Japan was used as the centrepiece for You Only Live Twice starring Sean Connery.

In the 1967 film, the then dormant volcano, had an artificial lake hiding the secret base of Bond nemesis Ernst Blofeld.

The volano interior was created by the iconic 1960s film set designer Sir Ken Adam and built at Pinewood Studios in England.

The eruptions forced the cancellation of services on the JR Nippo Main Line between Tano and Kokubu stations, on the Nichinan Line between Aoshima and Shibushi stations, and on the whole Kitto Line. A section of the Miyazaki Expressway also remained closed off due to poor visibility. On the evening of Jan. 26, after the volcano's eruption warning level was upgraded, the Kirishima Municipal Government in Kagoshima Prefecture closed mountain trail entrances within a 2 kilometer radius. It has asked residents to voluntarily avoid using other trail entrances.

Galeras volcano eruption expected

Colombian authorities have raised the risk level of the Galeras volcano to orange alert, meaning an eruption is likely within days or weeks.

The Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining (Ingeominas) declared the alert on the Galeras volcano in south-west Colombia Wednesday because of "fluctuating levels in the occurrence of seismicity," according to a statement issued by Ingeominas.

In particular, "the occurrence of earthquakes with screw-type characteristics, which are relevant because in Galeras they have been recorded in periods prior to eruptions," has caused the government agency to warn of an impending eruption.

The Civil Defense and Red Cross volunteers have prepared nine shelters with basic elements necessary for survival to accommodate the some 8,000 residents from the nearby municipalities of Pasto, Nari�o, and La Florida, the Director of the local Red Cross relief organization Javier Guerrero told RCN Radio. No residents have been evacuated yet.

Galeras is the country's most active volcano. It erupted in January 2010, forcing the evacuation of the area's inhabitants. In 2009 the volcano erupted five times.
