NEW ORLEANS - In de Golf van Mexico dreigt een grote olieramp te ontstaan als gevolg van het zinken van een booreiland van het bedrijf Transocean Ltd.
Inmiddels drijft er een oliemassa van ongeveer dertien vierkante kilometer op open zee, zo meldde de Amerikaanse kustwacht donderdag (lokale tijd).
''We beschouwen dit als een grootschalige olielekkage'', aldus een woordvoerder van de kustwacht.
Het drama voltrekt zich voor de kust van de staat Louisiana in de Golf van Mexico. Sinds de explosie dinsdagavond laat worden elf arbeiders vermist.
Overlevenden
De zoekoperatie duurt nog voort, maar de reddingswerkers achten de kans klein dat er nog overlevenden worden gevonden. Er waren 126 mensen op het booreiland toen de brand ontstond door nog onbekende oorzaak. Zeventien gewonden moesten met helikopters worden overgebracht naar ziekenhuizen op het vasteland.
Het is volstrekt onduidelijk hoeveel olie er nog vrij komt vanaf de plek waar tot voor kort het Deepwater Horizon booreiland dreef, circa 65 kilometer uit de Amerikaanse kust.
Voor de explosie had het booreiland, dat ongeveer zo groot was als een voetbalveld, 700.000 gallon (meer dan 2,6 miljoen liter) olie opgeslagen. Dagelijks werd meer dan een miljoen liter olie gewonnen met behulp van de installaties op het booreiland, dat werd geleasd door het Britse olieconcern BP.
Bodem
Het is ook nog onduidelijk of het booreiland volledig naar de bodem is gezonken. Ter plaatse is de Golf van Mexico ongeveer 1500 meter diep. De Amerikaanse autoriteiten, BP en Transocean hebben een operatie opgezet om de oliemassa te isoleren en te voorkomen dat deze de kusten van de staten Louisiana, Alabama en Mississippi gaat vervuilen.
Van commerciële winning was nog geen sprake. BP voerde proeven uit, enkele weken nadat de Amerikaanse president Barack Obama plannen naar buiten bracht voor nieuwe offshore olie- en gasboringen.
Deskundigen vrezen dat de olieramp kan uitgroeien tot de ergste in de Verenigde Staten sinds 1989, toen zich in de wateren bij Alaska een ramp voordeed met de olietanker Exxon Valdez. Destijds raakte 750 kilometer kust vervuild met bijna 11 miljoen gallon (41 miljoen liter) ruwe olie.
Obama
President Barack Obama heeft gezegd dat de reactie op de olieramp de hoogste prioriteit verdient. Dat liet het staatshoofd weten in een verklaring, die werd uitgegeven na spoedberaad op het Witte Huis.

De economie van de VS strekt zich veel verder uit dan alleen de Golf van Mexico en de kustlijnen aldaar. Om die reden is het overdreven om te zeggen dat deze lek de economie van de VS in gevaar brengt. Die is van veel en veel meer factoren afhankelijk. De enorme tekorten en schulden zijn eerder een gevaar voor de economie.
Niet echt een ver gezochte redenatie dus gezien de vele miljoenen in de regio met onafgeloste hypotheken en de waarschijnlijkheid van velen faillissementen e.d.
Kwestie van "agree to disagree" dan maar? ook gezien de ramp nog gaande is?
De tijd zal het ons sowieso verder allemaal haarfijn uit gaan leggen heb ik het idee

Media are encouraged to seek out a BP representative at the work-site to help provide information and safe access.
If a BP representative is not present, media should ask to speak with the work-site manager or supervisor about access and safety guidelines.

Scientists are confronting growing evidence that BP's ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico is creating oxygen-depleted "dead zones" where fish and other marine life cannot survive.
In two separate research voyages, independent scientists have detected what were described as "astonishingly high" levels of methane, or natural gas, bubbling from the well site, setting off a chain of reactions that suck the oxygen out of the water. In some cases, methane concentrations are 100,000 times normal levels.
Other scientists as well as sport fishermen are reporting unusual movements of fish, shrimp, crab and other marine life, including increased shark sightings closer to the Alabama coast.
Larry Crowder, a marine biologist at Duke University, said there were already signs that fish were being driven from their habitat.
"The animals are already voting with their fins to get away from where the oil spill is and where potentially there is oxygen depletion," he said. "When you begin to see animals changing their distribution that is telling you about the quality of water further offshore. Basically, the fish are moving closer to shore to try to get to better water."
Such sightings – and an accumulation of data from the site of the ruptured well and from the ocean depths miles away – have deepened concerns that the enormity of the environmental disaster in the Gulf has yet to be fully understood. It could also jeopardise the Gulf's billion-dollar fishing and shrimping industry.
In a conference call with reporters, Samantha Joye, a scientist at the University of Georgia who has been studying the effects of the spill at depth, said the ruptured well was producing up to 50% as much methane and other gases as oil.
The finding presents a new challenge to scientists who so far have been focused on studying the effects on the Gulf of crude oil, and the 5.7m litres of chemical dispersants used to break up the slick.
Joye said her preliminary findings suggested the high volume of methane coming out of the well could upset the ocean food chain. Such high concentrations, it is feared, would trigger the growth of microbes, which break up the methane, but also gobble up oxygen needed by marine life to survive, driving out other living things.
Joye said the methane was settling in a 200-metre layer of the water column, between depths of 1,000 to 1,300 metres in concentrations that were already threatening oxygen levels.
"That water can go completely anoxic [extremely low oxygen] and that is a pretty serious situation for any oxygen-requiring organism. We haven't seen zero-oxygen water but there is certainly enough gas in the water to draw oxygen down to zero," she said.
"It could wreak havoc with those communities that require oxygen," Joye said, wiping out plankton and other organisms at the bottom of the food chain.
A Texas A&M University oceanographer issued a similar warning last week on his return from a 10-day research voyage in the Gulf. John Kessler recorded "astonishingly high" methane levels in surface and deep water within a five-mile radius of the ruptured well. His team also recorded 30% depletion of oxygen in some locations.
Even without the gusher, the Gulf was afflicted by 6,000 to 7,000 square miles of dead zone at the mouth of the Mississippi river, caused by run-off from animal waste and farm fertiliser.
The run-off sets off a chain reaction. Algae bloom and quickly die, and are eaten up by microbes that also consume oxygen needed by marine life.
But the huge quantities of methane, or natural gas, being released from the well in addition to crude presents an entirely new danger to marine life and to the Gulf's lucrative fishing and shrimping industry.
"Things are changing, and what impacts there are on the food web are not going to be clear until we go out and measure that," said Joye.

Is it time to blow up the gushing BP oil well? Much like the oil spill itself, it's an idea that keeps spreading despite efforts by the Obama administration to contain it. Most recently, former president Bill Clinton voiced his support for the "just blow it up" solution.
It may become necessary to "send the Navy down deep to blow up the well and cover the leak with piles and piles and piles of rock and debris," Clinton said at a weekend forum hosted by several news organizations. "...Unless we're going to do that, we are dependent on the technical expertise of these people from BP."
Clinton's comments came weeks after government officials dismissed the explosive solution.
"I think we'd have to run out of a lot of things before we'd consider something like that," Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen told "Good Morning America" earlier this month. He later said that even a non-nuclear explosion -- considered by some to be less controversial and less dangerous -- could also prove more hurtful than helpful.
Some who have floated the idea agree that it's risky, but ask whether explosives would be any worse than the status quo -- up to 60,000 barrels of oil are leaking into the Gulf of Mexico each day and BP's efforts to drill relief wells to plug the leak are more than a month away from completion.
"At what point do the real damages that pile up outweigh the potential risks of something like weapons use a couple of thousand feet below the sea floor?" said Michael E. Webber, the associate director of the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. Webber was among the first to publicly raise the possibility of using explosives to seal the BP well; he says that he does not necessarily support the idea, but maintains that it's worth consideration.
Here's how he and others say the explosives proposal could work: Near the failed BP Macado oil well, another hole would have to be drilled some 3,000 feet down. Explosives would then be lowered into that hole. Detonating those explosives would create a cavity below the sea floor that would envelop a section of the neighboring BP well and plug it with rubble.
