Iets anders: ik blijf het raar vinden dat men zo een "all star game" heeft,precies 1 week voor Superbowl terwijl je juist zou verwachten dat je geen risico neemt met je clubspelers wanneer je een week later de finale van het NFL seizoen moet spelen. Carl Carey said Sunday night that the Panthers have "not made a single inquiry this offseason" regarding the impending unrestricted free agent.

"And we don't expect to hear from them," Carey told The Associated Press in a telephone interview, setting the stage for Peppers to become one of the top defensive players to hit the market in years, ahead of a potential season without a salary cap.


Panthers general manager Marty Hurney didn't immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

"Julius wants to thank the Carolina fans and know their support has meant a lot to him over the years," Carey said.

The hiring ends a prolonged search that included an interview with Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers. The Bears also were interested in former Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates, who worked with Cutler in Denver, but Bates went to the Seattle Seahawks with Pete Carroll after serving a season on USC's staff.

The Bears also interviewed the Cincinnati Bengals' Ken Zampese and the San Diego Chargers' Rob Chudzinski.

Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle that will make it difficult for him to play against the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV, a source familiar with the injury told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The Colts were maintaining Sunday that Freeney has a low ankle sprain and remained questionable, which means he has about a 50-50 chance of playing.

Team spokesman Craig Kelley said Sunday night Freeney was being treated in Florida for a basketball-type injury.

"He is under the care of our athletic training staff," Kelley said. "Nothing we have seen changes our diagnosis that he is questionable. He has a third-degree, low basketball sprain."

A third-degree ankle sprain by definition involves a complete tear of an ankle ligament.

And contrary to popular belief, the Philadelphia Eagles plan on keeping Vick in 2010, NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi reported Tuesday.

"They have no intention this offseason of trading Michael Vick," Lombardi said on NFL Network's NFL Total Access. "Many people around the league feel like that's a lot of false bravado, (and) they're going to release him, because he has a ($1.5 million) roster bonus due in March. Not the case."

CHICAGO -- Officials with the new Arena Football One league said Thursday they are on schedule to return to the field next spring with a more modest economic model they hope will ensure its success.

The new indoor league debuts in April in 15 communities, including seven cities that hosted teams in the now defunct Arena Football League.

"The challenge is to do it in the best businesslike manner," Arena Football One commissioner Jerry Kurz said during a news conference announcing the revival of the Chicago Rush, a perennial AFL power. "The [old] league didn't do that."

Arena Football One this week purchased the assets of the AFL in a deal approved by a judge overseeing the AFL's Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

The reported $6.1 million sale included all team names, logos, records, film and video libraries, and other assets from the Arena Football League, which called off the 2009 season a year ago and then indefinitely suspended operations in August.

AFL then filed for bankruptcy protection. Legal proceedings also included af2, a 25-team indoor football league with teams in smaller markets that the AFL partly owned.

"The game was always good," said Kurz, who spent the last six years as president of af2. "Some would say [the AFL] tried to do too much, too soon. We won't make that mistake."

Arena Football One will be a mix of former AFL and af2 teams, with Chicago as the largest market. Tampa, Fla., Arizona, Cleveland, Orlando, Dallas and Utah -- all former AFL locations -- will also be represented in the new league.

The league will also have teams in smaller markets such as Spokane, Wash., Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Okla., Milwaukee and Bossier-Shreveport, La. League offices will be in Tulsa.

Arena Football One will operate as a single entity, with all players and coaches considered league employees, an arrangement similar to Major League Soccer. The league also hopes it will have lower costs with centralized purchasing, insurance and marketing.

None of the former AFL ownership groups are involved in the new league, although there are some familiar faces coming back in Chicago and Cleveland.

The Rush announced that the return of head coach Mike Hohensee, who guided an earlier Chicago team to an Arena Bowl title. New owners in Cleveland, meanwhile, said that former Cleveland Browns star Bernie Kosar would serve in an advisory capacity. Kosar was the Gladiators' president in 2008.

Kurz said the league has hired Neal H. Pilson, former president of CBS Sports, to explore potential TV deals. The AFL had recent broadcast exposure with NBC Sports and later with ESPN.

The league alignment and schedules will be announced before year's end, Kurz said.

In the league's American Conference, Alabama, Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa Bay will make up the South Division while Bossier-Shreveport, Dallas, Oklahoma City and Tulsa will be in the South West Division.

The Northern Conference will have Chicago, Cleveland, Iowa and Milwaukee in the Midwest Division and Arizona, Spokane and Utah in the West Division.

Je hebt de CFL, dat is een professionele American Football league in Canada (wel met wat andere regels, belangrijkste verschil: CFL is three downs ipv four downs).
Verder is er afgelopen jaar in de US de UFL van start gegaan (United Football league)

En technisch gezien heb je ook nog de indoor variant, de AFL (Arena Football league) die zelfs een Arena league 2 hebben. De AFL verkeert echter in zware financiele problemen en heeft dan ook het seizoen 2009 gecancelled. Ze zouden het in 2010 weer willen proberen.

En dan zijn er ook nog (regionale) semi-pro leagues
